Fate at a Glance (Blixt and Bodhi shortstory)

The little glowing mushrooms left a trail. Blixt had ignored them at first, he didn't think anything of them. But they were very strange...he had never seen them in the Forest before.

He wandered over to the Pond to take a sip of the cooling water. The night was just starting, and the strange glowing mushrooms seemed like little lanterns that faintly illuminated the ground much like low-flying fireflies. He was careful not to step on them.

Looking over, he caught a glance at a little fawn who was hanging out with a few other deer. Blixt tilted his head at first, he thought the fawn seemed camouflaged at first. But then he noticed that it was actually covered with plant life. In fact, the others it was laughing with were plant-like deer as well.

Normally Blixt would have turned away here, not that this fawn was any concern to him. But there was something oddly familiar about the fawn's face.

It reminded him of his doe...the one he and Dond fought over...the one that lost her life to wolves while he wandered the Endless Forest trying to regain his memory after that nearly fatal fall off of a cliffside.

The fawn was too interesting to him, he simply could not walk away.

When the others bowed and walked off, Bodhi was left alone, smiling happily. It turned to see the other green deer approaching. The mask was extremely interesting to Bodhi, who immediately spoke, "Oh hello there, sir! This one thinks you have a beautiful face. Please tell, where did that come from? This one has never seen anything like it before."

Blixt blinked for a second. The fawn's speech was odd to him. But he disregarded his thoughts and replied, "Mhmm...this mask was given to me by the Gods to hide my face. I doubt you'd be interested...", he hesitated just long enough for Bodhi's eyes to widen.

"Oh! Please, may this one see your face, your real face? This one is very curious as what you really look like.", Bodhi asked immediately.

Blixt was taken aback at the sudden request, but he smiled just a little, and lowering his face, the mask slipped off. He raised his head and showed Bodhi the face that was hidden, including the deep gash that ran from his forehead to his chin, passing between his eyes and down his nose and mouth.

"Your face...why do you hide it? This one thinks you look very lovely just as you are.", Bodhi's words were strangely touching. It was really too young to understand what scars were, and genuinely saw Blixt's face as pretty.

"...well...I hide my face because I'm afraid of what others would think of me. I got this scar from something terrible that happened, something I wish I could regret.", Blixt spoke, closing his eyes and letting out a sigh.

Bodhi's eyes were locked on him, and it approached and sat by his legs, looking up to him adorably like a puppy would. "Please tell me the story. This one would like to know about your beautiful face."

Blixt tilted his head, "You really want to know about it?", he asked. Bodhi nodded immediately, and Blixt let out another little sigh before sitting himself and telling the story.

"There was a stag named Dond who was my best friend, and long ago, we used to have fun and spar with each other to see who could throw the other down. Well, the playfulness of it turned to jealousy, because a doe who was very beautiful entered into both of our lives at the same time. She found favor with me, and we were mates for a while, but Dond was jealous of this, and challenged me for her love.

We fought on the side of a cliff, and he pushed me off the cliff. I fell a great distance, and thought I would die right then and there, but the Twin Gods gave me a second chance at life. I forgot who I was or anything that happened, and had this deep gash in my face that eventually became the scar you see now. The Gods gave me this mask to cover my face, so I could live on as a peaceful deer rather than one who lived in shame and rejected by others."

Bodhi's body pressed up against Blixt, and at that moment, the little spores came out of it's back. They concentrated onto Blixt's body, and when they connected with his fur, they quickly grew into the strangely beautiful glowing mushrooms.

"How could anyone not see how beautiful of a deer you are? This one thinks you worry a little too much. Or maybe those deer you are afraid of just don't see the world correctly.", the plant-fawn spoke, a gentle smile on its face with the words that came out.

Blixt was a little offended at first that a fawn would give him life advice, but then he dropped the feeling when he realized how right Bodhi was. "You really think I'm 'pretty'?", he asked.

Bodhi nodded ecstatically, "All deer are lovely in their own way. Look at yourself again in the water. You'll see the you this one sees.", it spoke, and standing up, the fawn walked away a little ways before turning and saying, "It was wonderful hearing your story. This one would love to meet you again, but it needs to find a nice place for a nap. Thank you for the visit."

The green stag watched the little plant fawn bow and then walk away toward the Old Oak. He stood himself, and looked at the strange mushrooms that remained on his body. Turning, he walked off in the other direction, his mind now only on this fawn.

It would take some time for him to discover that Bodhi was really his fawn...
