Deer Mentioned: (in order of appearance) Saiyko, Revtheyr, Emmy, Wesker, & Darkweaver

.

I awoke this morning to the brittle sound of crunching snow. I expected something more warming such as the sunshine that shone just a day ago. I could feel the fluffy wetness clinging to my fur as it threatened to send a shiver down my spine.

It might as well be hailing, as I detest the sheer coldness of the snow. But as I stood up and shook myself of the white crystals, I noticed something different about this snowfall. The forest did not look cold, like it had in my former home. If anything, it was inviting.

I shook my head. Snow was my enemy even in this forest. I had never come to like the stuff as a fawn and I wasn't about to start now that I am older. Through the falling flakes in the distance, I could make out the figure of a large deer. His antlers were massive compared to my puny nubs. I took a few steps forward, careful not to slip and land in the cold blanket. The large stag became easier to see as he noticed me approach. He seemed a little optimistic about approaching any closer, as was I, but in time we bowed and got closer to each other.

And we were off. This stag was even friendlier than I had first hoped. We introduced ourselves, as politely as possible, of course. His name was Saiyko, which I though rather odd at first. He didn't seem to act the way that his name portrayed... until we found the mushrooms. I lost count of how much time we spent changing each other's masks and antlers. We each ended up with something completely different from what we started out with. Sai had long pointed antlers like an antelope, while I had tall feathered antlers like a circus performer. Our masks matched perfectly, they were both long red ones with intricate designs on them. Not long after our masks were obtained, though, we discovered a tricky squirrel who was cleverly casting spells on us from inside the tree. So the chase began.

We soon lost sight of the shapeshifter. So we laughed and rolled back onto our haunches. I forgot the snow was there. I jumped up quickly, feeling like I'd been bitten by the sudden cold crunch. How embarrassing. I bowed farewell to my deer friend Saiyko and loped through the snow to the pond. It's surface was frozen solid, as I soon discovered when I tried to get a drink. Sighing, I nimbly circled the pond and climbed the hill to the towering hollowed oak tree. It's interior promised warmth, especially with all the deer that were in there. Their pelts would be wonderful to curl up against. I entered, smiling sheepishly to the inhabitants, but stopped when I saw a deer that I could not forget. It was Revtheyr.
I felt a twinge of sorrow for the stag. It must be hard to hold through after such an event. Bowing my head to his sleeping body, I quietly stepped to his side and laid by him, hoping to keep him warm with the heat from myself, a larger stag, and two other fawns.

I don't recall when I actually fell into consciousness again. I must have slept for hours, or so I thought. I stood up and stretched. The snow had stopped falling and it had soaked into the ground. In it's place was darkness. I shivered. I loved the dark, but the sound of the owls made my spine crawl. In my old home, the owls were big enough to carry you away and feed you to their young. They seemed smaller here, less dangerous even, but I didn't want to chance it.
In the distance I could here bellowing and a strange rhythmic sound drifting from the Hill of Statues. I ran from my shelter towards the group of deer. They were swaying back and forth- in sync with the strange sound. It was a cheery sound, to my surprise. Timidly, I inched closer to the large group. Many deer stopped swaying and turned to bow to me, then returned to their swaying again. I did not understand what they were doing, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I started to lightly sway with them, listening to their laughter and that strange sound. The sound grew louder and louder as I swayed more and more. This indeed was very fun.

After the strange noise died down, many deer departed from the hill. Soon it was nothing more than that. Just a hill with those odd statues on it. I looked around and sighed. Everyone seemed to be having fun in a group of their friends. I would have joined them, but something told me I wasn't welcome. I shook my head and headed towards the ruins. At least there were other deer there, so I wasn't completely alone. I found what seemed to be an old alter of sorts, it looked comfortable enough. I was just about to lie down and rest when I heard a gentle whistle from behind me. I barely turned around before I came face to face with a deer I had met before. It was the silly doe I had met on my first day as a stag in this forest, it was Emmy! Though her sudden appearance shouldn't have scared me, it did. I reared up as a fight or flight reaction, but lost my footing and landed on my head. Oh Emmy, only you could make me do that, hahaha!

I pranced about with Emmy for a while. Playing fun games and being generally goofy with the pagan statues. I asked her about what happened earlier on the hill and she explained to me that the deer were dancing, and that the strange noise was music. But I grew tired of asking all these questions, and bowed goodbye to her.
I awoke again to the sound of crashing antlers and the rusty smell of blood. I stood up quickly and wheeled around to see what was going on. Two deer were fighting! Both had bony pelts like my own, but they had skull faces as well. I cowered as the landed one blow after another on each other. No one tried to stop them either! I wanted to roar at them and make them stop, but I was afraid they'd turn and attack me, so I watched. The fan antlered stag knocked the other's mask off and they continued their fight. I shook my head and closed my eyes. I didn't want to see anymore, so I turned and ran.

I ran to the hollowed oak once more and this time I laid down and closed my eyes.
The visions of the day flashed before me in the darkness.
