I've decided to post a short excerpt from my developing story The Endless Forest: A Tale of Tales. If you'd like to be involved in my story, please click here.

The little red fawn became still. Her ears perked upright, her front hoof hovered, her body tensed. Interfering thoughts cleared from her mind, making way for her senses. She could feel the warm sigh of the air, hear it gently rustle the leaves of the trees, see the morning dew drops sparkle on the grass blades, taste the moisture in the air, smell the myriad aromas drifting around her. Sifting through the odors of the Forest, she came across a familiar one: rusty red fur, slightly damp, an aura of satisfaction with a twinge of bashfulness.

Ah, there you are.

Following the fragrance’s trail, she weaved through the rippling shadows of the leafy canopy above her. A cluster of periwinkles sat in a pocket of constant sunlight, and the little red fawn felt them brush against her underside.

Magic requires much strength from within, Ductu had said. The Forest knows this, and it shall help you if you allow it to.

Once again, she stopped. Interfering thoughts cleared from her mind, except for her underlying doubt, and she hollowed out her flesh to make room for the company of the Forest. Like this, she stood for what she believed was too long. The doubt began to cloud her head, along with the slight disappointment. A slight tingling sensation interrupted. The vibration spread through her entire face, the epicenter between her eyes. It was working, yes! She could barely make out the glowing orb of energy manifesting in her furrowed brow. It increased in intensity, the orb grew, her heart began to rush, yes, yes, yes! The periwinkles rubbed her belly as a cold gust barreled past.

Huh?

The cold seeped into her, spreading it’s chilling fingers across her flesh, freezing her bones. Fear began to infect her being, her heart pounded against her breast. A deep, guttural moan reverberated among the trees, surrounding her, enveloping her, scraping through her ears.

Who is there?! she demanded.

Suddenly, gone. The air calmed, her heart slowed, the fear receded, her flesh thawed.

What has happened? She circled around in a disoriented fashion, her legs trembling. Where have you gone?

Nothing answered. The Forest was silent.
