Elk Study [Critique?]

arrowdoe's picture
I looked over Ephra's art post and felt the urge to draw something...
Needless to say- I've yet to find a style consistent enough that I like. /shot
This is one of the very few more detailed pictures I do, so I'm not entirely used to it...

So- I'm asking for a little bit of critique on this. Please nothing harsh, I just want to learn.

[EDIT;] I'd like to point out that I want my artwork to feel a little cartoony- I'm not trying to go overboard realistic xD

I'm not familiar with Elk

I'm not familiar with Elk anatomy so I can't really give much, but I think you've done a great job on the details, and the face is especially well sculpted. I would just watch how you put the ears, simply because I'm having a hard time telling if they are behind or in front of the antler. A very small point to be sure, and I can't wait to see this done! Laughing out loud

Those ears wanted to die

Those ears wanted to die young anyway D<
I have no idea if I'll ever finish this, since it's just a sketchy study, but thank you very much! c: <3

You say this needs critique?

You say this needs critique? can't find much... but maybe a tiny bit more neckfur. And the cheek might need to be a bit larger.

this is lovely so many

this is lovely so many details. i can't find a thing wrong with it

Mm... I think the size of the cheek is just a style quirk that I have. I only usually make larger cheeks on more aggressive deer xD
You're right about the neckfur, since this IS an elk. I'll remember that next time.

Even if you're not aiming for

Even if you're not aiming for a very realistic style in the end, studying from life, and starting off with realism always helps ^-^ If you look at the work-process of many animators/character designers* what they'll usually do is this, before abstracting the forms down into more appealing designs (and of course, more easily animated forms! XD) and their style sort-of naturally evolves out of out that, so don't worry too much about style now Smiling

A nice picture of Frank Thomas, one of the two lead animators of Bambi, with a deer in the Disney studios. Picture from Mouseplanet.com

From your picture I can tell that that's what you've already done, but it's always good to bear in mind ^-^ So lecture time is over now XD

The anatomy is very good, and the character of the drawing is very true to elk, I think, but a bit of light would bring out those lovely-defined features and describe their shape with a bit more oomph, it you get my drift ;D

(Sorry if this crit is a bit rambly ^-^;;;;;)

*In an perfect world, of course XP Time is ver. precious in the animation bizz!
