Hi! This is a story about a wolf. Enjoy!
Chapter 1:
In a small field, a litter of pups being watched by their parents played. One particular pup was practicing. Practicing for something no wolf has done before.
Away from his siblings, the pup sighed. Why do you think you can do this? It's ridiculous. I'm hopeless. He thought. The pup looked up to see a raven flying though the air. The bird could feel the breezing winds as it soared, glided, flew.
The pup would never give up. He can't now. The pup climbed on a rock, and jumped... he felt the wind fly under his belly... his fur flying though the wind... he was about to close his eyes when- THUMP! The pup landed on the hard ground. Well, he failed this time. He could do this... the pup felt it... So he climbed on the rock, and right before he jumped, he heard his name.
"Tuari!" His mother called.
"Tuari! Where are you?" His mother peeked though the bushes, and found him on the rock. "There you are!" His mother exclaimed.
"Wait, have you been jumping off that rock again?"
Tuari nodded. "Yes, I have."
"How many times do I have to tell you, Tuari? How many times have I told you to stop jumping off things? You'll hurt yourself!" Mother said.
"I know, mom. But I can do it! Watch this!" Tuari gave his rear a little wiggle, and jumped off.
"Wait, Tuari!" The other pups had came to watch.
"Guys! Look! I'm doing it! I'm actually-" THUMP. Tuari landed on the ground.
"Ow..." The pup saw a red oozing liquid gush out of his paw. He felt so humiliated! All of his siblings were laughing at him. Monkaushka, one of Tuari's brothers, walked up to him while the pups walked away.
"Tuari! You got a cut!" Mother squealed.
"Don't you ever jump of a rock again, or you will be in big trouble, young wolf. Now come on, my sons and daughters. It is getting dark out and now we shall go to sleep."
All pups groaned, but Tuari sighed. No one would believe him. He could do it. He knew he could.
"You know, Tuari, you know that you will never-" Monkaushka said.
"Yes I can!!" Tuari interrupted.
"You know it's not physically possible for a wolf to do that, you know." Monkaushka looked around.
"So I'd advise you to stop 'practicing'. Your only gonna make a fool of yourself."
And the pup ran off, leaving Tuari behind. He sighed again. As he walked into the den, he watched the sun fall down. On a nearby tree Tuari could see the body of an owl, and the glowing yellow eyes. They stared at each other for a moment, and the owl turned away, and took off. Tuari could almost feel what the owl felt... the wind under his fur, and the exciting roller coaster ride and flying down... the going up before landing, and the trees and plants and animals zooming right past...
So Tuari walked into the den, and slept.
Because someday, Tuari will fly.
Chapter 2:
It was morning now. The sound of yawning filled the air of the cold, hard, den. Tuari was the only one snoring. Tuari liked sleeping, beside practicing his flying, and it always took a long time for him to get up.
"Come on, sleepy head! Get up!" Tuari's sister pounded her paws on his back until one lazy eye opened.
"Aponi, I don't like the way you wake up other wolves." Tuari replied. Aponi looked at him for a moment, then turned to the others, and yipped, "We need reinforcements!"
"YA!" all pups said at the same time while in midair. They aimed for Tuari and before anyone knew it, he was covered and swarmed by his own siblings. Mother couldn't help but laugh out loud. She loved her pups. But at the same time Mother wasn't sure if there was something right about Tuari.
"OK, okay..." Tuari got up and stretched as the others jumped off.
"Yeah, get up and stretch so you can spend the whole day 'Practicing'." yipped Chardon. The air of the den was now filled with laughter. Tuari, once again, felt humiliated. What was wrong with practicing?
Well, Mother thought. I should just let him dream whatever he wants. But what if Tuari believed that he could fly though out his whole life? Would Mother want her pack to have a crazy wolf running around, "practicing" his flying? Or if he dispersed, would Mother really want a crazy wolf running around Yellowstone, not knowing the truth?
Mother just decided that Tuari would learn later.
Once again, the pups were playing in the field, being watched by their parents. A few pack members came to watch the pups play. They were wolves that had born in a few litters before Tuari and his siblings. They watched them play, and talked to each other about how they would play in the fields, how they chased butterflies and played tag. How they would play-fight. They babbled their mouths off about their pup hood. Even Mother and Father shared some memories.
Tuari's eyes were glued to the rock. The rock where he would jump off of. The rock where he swore he flew. The rock where he had been scolded millions of times, the rock where he was disappointed the most, the rock where he told himself a billion, trillion, quadrillion times that it would never happen, but he still never gave up hope.
Slowly, he reached a paw an inch closer to the rock.
Tuari would practice today.
He reached another paw.
Nothing can stop him.
His other paw reached-
"Tuari!" he heard a snarl. He stopped cold.
Tuari gulped, and slowly turned around and sat.
"What did I tell you about jumping off the rock?" Mother said softly.
"To not to..." Tuari said quietly.
"Yes, so don't do that." Mother replied.
Tuari sighed. "There's nothing to do!" he whined.
"Then go play with the other pups." Mother turned to the other pups, then turned back to Tuari.
"But I-"
"Do what your mother says, Tuari." said father.
"Fine, fine, alright." Tuari headed to his siblings.
Mother, Father, and the pack members watched Tuari run to the pups. One wolf walked up to Mother.
"What's he practicing for?" the wolf said.
"Tuari?" Well, he thinks..." Mother paused.
"He can fly."
Chapter 3:
Father got up.
"What do you need, Najinca?" Asked Mother.
"It is time the pups learned about the wolf's way." replied Father.
"Ooooh. Go right ahead, dear." said Mother. Father nodded, and howled to the pups.
"Come on, young pups." Father announced. "It is time you learned the wolf's way." All pups scurried and sat in front of Father.
"The wolf's way is a very complicated order." Father explained. "Must you be wolf, you follow the wolf's way. I shall not teach you all the rules of the wolf's way, you shall learn about it as you grow on and live." Father paused.
"If you don't learn, you are not wolf." All the pups listened carefully.
"All packs have a title for them." Father said. "Such as the SpiritFur pack. They are the pack of glory. The GroundKill pack, the pack of speed and strength. Our pack, the BlackFang pack, well, has no title." Father explained. The pups gasped.
"Why?" asked Aponi. "We should have a name."
"Well," said Father,"We have not decided."
Tuari thought hard. What should be the title of the BlackFang pack? More important, how will he practice his flying?
He shook his head. "Hey, Aponi!" Tuari yelled. "Wanna play hawk and mouse?"
"Oooooooooooooooo, I love that game!" Aponi replied.
"OK!" yipped Tuari. He climbed on a bush, which he found hard to do, and turned around.
"Here, I'm the hawk and your the mouse." he said.
"Aw, no fair!" said Aponi. "Can I be the hawk this time? You were the hawk three times in a row."
"You'll be hawk next time." Said Tuari."I promise."
"That's what you say each time!"
"Aponi! Please?"
"Fine. fine, as long as I'm the hawk next time."
Aponi turned around from her brother and acted like a mouse.
Tuari gave his rear a little wiggle, and leaped off the bush. For a second Tuari thought he would fall down, but then he felt the wind under his fur. The wind blowing in his face. Tuari thought he was flying in the air.
I'm flying! I'm flying!
Now all he had to do was to land an catch his sister. Gravity made him fall, but Tuari could swear he could swoop down. And he flew down, down...
THUMP! Tuari landed on Aponi.
"Oh my gosh! I-I can't believe it!" Tuari yipped.
"I flew! I flew!" Dragging his sister with him, Tuari ran into the center of the puppies and yelled,
"I flew!"
Tuari jumped into the air. "I can fly!"
"Actually," said Aponi, "Gravity just pulled you down. And while you were "flying", you were just jumping."
And once again Tuari was being laughed at.
Chapter 4:
"I see what you mean." Said one wolf who was watching Tuari.
Tuari lowered his head, tail between legs. Mother and Father did not say anything, they just watched as their pup slowly walked away.
Ishedus watched Tuari walk into the bushes. She was from a litter before him, but she still could not imagine what her younger brother was into. She waited a few minutes for the pup to come out, but Tuari was still hidden away from his siblings.
Ishedus walked into the bushes to see Tuari looking at the beyond. What should she do? Ishedus wanted Tuari to keep dreaming of his flight. She thought different from the others. But, how could she make Tuari feel better?
Ishedus felt a light bulb pop out of her head.
She walked over to Tuari and sat down beside him.
"What do you want?" Tuari murmured.
"If you are going to have a discussion with me that I can never fly, then go away." Ishedus looked at Tuari closely.
"Tuari, i'm not like the others. I know you can fly." She said. Tuari's ears perked up. He turned his head directly at her.
"Really? Really and truly?" He asked.
"Yes, and you can fly." Ishedus replied. Tuari looked at her strangely.
"Yes, yes, I'm a... uh... magical wolf. Your own magical older sister."
"Really!? Why didn't mother or father tell me?"
"Because it's a secret. So don't tell anyone, or else I won't do what I will do next."
"Okay, I won't. I promise." Tuari whispered.
Ishedus smiled. She knew by the way he acted now, Tuari would be a great wolf when he grew up.
"I will give you your wings." She whispered. Tuari gasped.
"Really?! Your a great sister, Ishedus! The best sister ever!" Tuari started jumping in the air.
"But," said Ishedus,
"you must earn your wings."
Tuari stopped jumping.
"What!? How in the world am I supposed to earn my wings?" He yipped.
"Easy," said Ishedus.
"Practice flying, do some things, blah blah blah. Before you know it one morning you will wake up to see you have a pair of wings."
Tuari looked at Ishedus happily.
"And I will be able to fly!" he yipped happily. He could imagine himself with his wings, flying above the park of Yellowstone, soaring down, and the wind against his fur. Tuari imagined himself flying with the hawks and eagles, the owls and the ravens. Flying.
"Thanks, Ishedus! I promise I won't tell anyone that you're a magic wolf!" Indeed, Tuari would not. He wanted those wings so badly. Ishedus watched as Tuari ran away to play with his siblings.
Pups, she thought. They believe everything.
Chapter 5
Next morning Ishedus was crouching in the tall grass. The other wolves saw this, and quickly zoomed down.
"Elk tracks. Heading West." Ishedus flipped her head to the West direction. The scent of their prey was faint and cloudy, so they must have left this print two days ago. Ishedus stood up, knowing that the elk must of been far from here and they could not see or smell the pack, and the rest of the wolves did so too.
"Here's the plan. We keep following the tracks until we see the herd. There are five of us. Two go to the left, two go to the right, and I stay in the middle. We find the bull elk, for we need meat this hunt because the pack has not ate in a week. We stalk towards him, and then once we are a few feet away from him, we zoom in on him like missiles. Once we are in pouncing distance, pounce on his neck, shoulders, and rump. Keep holding until you can hold no longer. Then comes the normal fight: Bite, growl, and dodge. We keep doing that until our elk is dead. You all got that?" Ishedus explained.
All nodded.
"Good, now, let's go!"
It was a few minutes before the wolves found small brown dots. Ishedus's plan now took place. Two on the left crouched down and headed to the left, two on the right crouched and headed to the right, and Ishedus crouched down and went straight. The wolves got closer to the elk, and when the bull elk could be seen, grazing, the wolves headed straight for that elk.
Ishedus jumped first. She bit the shoulder. The bull reared in pain, blood spewed in the air. The rest of the herd ran away as the other wolves jumped up and bit him for as long as they could.
Once they let go, the elk started running away. No, my time has not yet come! I mustn't die! The elk ran as fast as he can for dear life, but the wolves easily caught up to him. One wolf jumped and bit the rear. The bull mooed in pain, and bucked the wolf off. The other wolves, including Ishedus, snarled and growled at the elk, and did not stop biting him. The other wolf, although injured from the elk's blow, joined in the fight again. After a few minutes, the elk had lost a lot of blood, and collapsed to the ground.
This is my time. I shall now die and let these wolves feast on me.
The elk slowly closed his eyes, and died.
And silently, the wolves ate.
*********
Ishedus and the wolves returned with meat. Tuari came running, and saw a beautiful chunk of meat. This was his.
"Wow!" Tuari yipped, mouth full. Meat spewed all over Ishedus.
"How did you get this? It's delicious!"
Ishedus shook the meat off, and lied down next to him.
"We found a bull elk and we chased it, then killed it. Very simple." She said. Ishedus watched as Tuari gobbled the last pieces of meat.
"I see you were hungry." Said Father. He licked the meat off his chops, and looked at his son.
"Yeah, I always loved meat ever since I first tasted it." Tuari said. Ishedus chuckled.
"That was the same with me when I was your age," She said, taking another bite of meat.
"Yes," said Father.
"She was the first one to stop nursing in her litter. One day when her mother told her to nurse, she said, 'Well, i'm tired of milk. Can you do blood, please?'" Father and Tuari started laughing. Ishedus just rolled her eyes, embarrassed.
Father walked away, and Ishedus poked Tuari's little body with her paw.
"Hey, Tauri!" She whispered.
"What?" Tuari replied.
"Follow me." She said.
"Why?"
"We're going to practice your flight."
"Mother says I can't."
"Well your with me now. C'mon." Ishedus got up and walked to the rock where Tuari always practiced. Tuari got up and followed his sister like she asked him too.
Ishedus was amazed at how easy it was for a pup to believe.
Chapter 6
As easy as it was for Tuari to believe, Ishedus knew that she had to act like it was real for a long time. And she wasn't quite sure if it would be hard or not.
There was no one looking, so Tuari and Ishedus headed to the rock. Tuari zoomed to the rock, but before jumping, his sister stopped him.
"Whoa whoa whoa!" She said. "Before you practice you must do chores."
Tuari rolled his eyes and groaned. "But you said I would be practicing!" he whimpered.
"And you are," said Ishedus. "All of the wolves that I have given wings to had to do chores to fly." Of course, she was kidding. Tuari believed, though he didn't like what he heard.
"What's my first chore?" he asked.
Ishedus pointed her head to the rock. "That rock is dirty." She said. "You can't practice with that thing. Go wash it. Get water from the puddle over there." she said.
Tuari did what he was told. He ran over to the puddle and bit the puddle. He managed to keep the water in his mouth, but when he was about two feet from the rock it washed down the throat. Tuari sighed, and went to get some more water. The water was muddy is disgusting. He could almost throw up. He bit the puddle again, but he swallowed it.
The Tuari got an idea. He jumped into the puddle and got himself soaked in the water. Ishedus stared at him strangely.
"No time for playing around! Time for chores!" she barked.
"I'm not playing!" Tuari yipped back. Tuari ran to the rock, and started shaking. The dirty water spewed everywhere. Everyone stopped their meal to watch. They watched as water reached the air and splattered the ground, the meat, even some wolves. Some she-wolves squealed.
"Ack!" Barked Ishedus as mud flew all over her.
Tuari finally stopped. For one eerie moment there was complete silence. No one moved a muscle. The sound of mud dripping off the coats of wolves could be heard.
"Nice." Said Ishedus, using her paw to wipe off the dirty water off her face.
That's all I have for now, hopefully in the future there will be more! I hope none of you are mad that I made a story about a wolf puppy!
I'm looking forward to
I wrote an unfinished story about a young wolf when I was younger, this brings back those memories a little. The effort you put into this story shines through!
