Dr. Clock - Chapter 3

Danielle opened her eyes slowly, making sure not to be blinded by any sudden light. Her brown eyes opened fully, and she lifted her head. That was some crazy night, she thought. Danielle stood and stretched. She noticed something was different, but she knew what it was.

She looked upon the others. All of them were different. They were smaller, longer ears, giant back legs. They had all become rabbits. Even though their shape was the same, they still retained their unique features from the forest. Vessel's eyes were still colorless, with the dark M still marking his face. Skokey had a golden blonde stripe running up his nose, the tip pointing to between his ears. Even Tropa and Xylia, who had very unusual pelt colors, still had some strange appearance. They were both gray, but something about their fur made them tinge to blue and green.

Danielle took in a deep breath, and hopped out of the burrow they had dug last night. It wasn't big enough to stay in forever, but they needed somewhere to rest. She took in the unfamiliar territory. Wide, grassy fields with very little trees, and tons of flowers. The scent was almost overpowering.

"Good morning, Danielle." Clock hopped up behind her. "How did ya sleep?"

Danielle looked at him. He was still brown with golden striped. He would stand out just as much as the others. "I slept okay, I guess. How would you expect to sleep after changing into a bunny?"

Clock smiled. "That's true. I'm not used to it either. I'm sure you'll sleep better tonight once we've gotten everything down."

Danielle smiled sweetly. "Did you sleep any better?"

Clock sighed and shook his head, "Nah. I didn't expect to."

The young doe lowered her ears slightly. Ever with all the fur on his face, she could still see dark lines under his eyes. But Clock still held his smile on his little, cream mouth. She knew she didn't have to worry too much.

"Where are the others?" Clock flicked one of his big ears.

"Still sleeping. Zilant looked like he was about to get up though."

"Yeah, he's a pretty early riser. Probly means Fulu will get up too. And that'll just set up its own chain reaction..."

"What about Fulu?" Zilant hopped out and stretched his long legs. His black fur shined in the morning sunlight. Out of all of them, he looked the most normal.

"Oh, speak of the devil. Is anyone else awake?"

Zilant shook his head, "No. They had a pretty rough night. I'm surprised I still got up this early."

Clock shrugged, "Yeah well, internal clocks and all that..."

The three stood for a few minutes, letting a gentle breeze pass over them. Clock looked at Danielle, being a typical teenager and thinking of what they would do today. Danielle looked around at all the different flowers she could spot to pass the silence. Zilant watched the two of them, thinking they looked rather cute together.

Zilant cleared his throat, "Well... Shall we explore?"

Clock looked at him for a minute and shook his head. "Not a good idea. We're not the biggest ones on the block anymore. We have to be careful here." He paused, "It would be best if we all stuck together from now on. No matter where we are. There's power in numbers."

"Of course..."

It was later in the morning, and all of them were fully awake. Fenqua, Skokey, and the twins started hopping around. Skokey personally thought the twins were especially adorable as rabbits, and loved it every time he looked at them. Fulu and Zilant walked together, discussing what rabbits must do during the day. Vessel and Xylia sat on a rock, having another one sided conversation. Tropa bounced around, launching grasshoppers and trying to catch them. And Mercutio marvelled at all the flowers he saw, trying to name all of them.

Clock and Danielle sat next to each other. He noticed her fur patterns. Dark brown, with some orange patches. A golden stripe marked her nose, just like Skokey's, but a little shorter. She had big, shiny brown eyes, he seemed to get lost in them.

Vessel and Xylia sat together, watching the others play and explore. "So this is... what it's like... being a rabbit..."

Vessel nodded.

"Never wondered... I never knew it... would be so different..."

Vessel nodded again. He looked to her and smirked.

She smiled back, her purple eyes glistening, "You look... good... as a rabbit..."

Vessel blushed slightly, and shrugged. He nuzzled her and put his paw on hers.

She giggled softly. "Thank you..."

She watched as the two little kittens hopped about, giggling and pulling at each others ears. They were followed by Skokey and Fenqua, making sure they were safe. Xylia looked at Vessel again. "Vessel... Have you ever... wondered... what it's like... to be a... a... parent?"

Vessel nodded, looking away. He sighed, closed his blank eyes, and shook his head.

"I know... But... I was... just wondering..." she seemed to be a little disappointed.

Vessel looked at her, trying to think of how to express what he was thinking. He rubbed her paw with his, and smiled.

She smiled sweetly, "Glad you... think so..."

They looked back down on the small family, watching in wonder. The two kittens rolled around in the short grass and moss, shouting and giggling. Their long, fluffy fur still tan, unknowing of what their pelt might be when they become older. Faytha suddenly bumped her head on a small stone, and started crying.

Fenqua ran over to her, "Oh sweetheart... You're okay..." Faytha continued to cry, but seemed to calm down a little. "I know that was scary, but see? It doesn't hurt anymore, does it?"

Faytha sniffed a couple times ".... No..." She still had a few stifled breathes, but stopped crying.

Fenqua smiled and kissed her on the head, "There, all better..."

Fenkovan hopped over to her and nuzzled her. "All better?"

Faytha took a few moments to calm down, and soon smiled again, "All better!"

The two began to play again, and soon found their stomachs growling. Fenkovan ran over to Fenqua, "Mommy, I'm hungry!"

Faytha soon followed, and Fenqua sat herself down. "I don't think any of us have had breakfast yet. I'm a little hungry myself."

Skokey swiveled his big ears, "Well... what do rabbits eat?"

Fenqua blinked while the twins nursed, her back turned to Skokey. "I... don't know..."

Skokey sighed slightly. "I'll ask Clock. I'm sure he'll know." He hopped off to where the two teenagers were sitting. "Hey Clock, I think we're getting a little hungry."

"Oh really? Me and Danielle already ate..."

Skokey drew one side of his mouth back and sighed through his nose. "We don't know what rabbits eat."

"Oh!" He stood up and looked around. "I'm sorry, I forgot. I think I'm the only one who knows about other species... Well, let's see..."

Fulu thumped over to her brother. "Are you asking him about food?"

Skokey looked at her, looking over her white and black splotched fur. "Just asked."

Clock came back after a moment. "Here, follow me. You can show everyone else afterwards." Clock led Fulu and Skokey for a few minutes through some taller grass. After a while, the grass suddenly cleared to reveal a stranger field. "Lucky for us, we stopped to rest next to an abandoned garden. There's still a good amount of edible food, save for a ton of weeds. But I'm sure you still have good weed judgement."

Fulu sniffed the air. "What exactly is in there?"

Clock shrugged. "Carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, onions... Must've been a weird family."

"Family?" Skokey furrowed his brow.

Clock realized he had said too much now. "Uh... Like I said, you can show everyone where it is when you're done." He scurried away before they could say anything.

Tropa and Mercutio were in the burrow, digging a little more for them to stay.

"If we have gained the fortune of finding an old garden, why on earth must we leave?" He started, his odd eyes squinting into the wall of dirt infront of him.

"It doesn't make sense to me either. I'm sure once we make this burrow bigger, he'll settle for it." Tropa's gray-green fur fluffed out when a stiff breeze happened to enter the burrow. "We'll need to fix the entrance a little too..."

"Of course. 'Twill be cold at nightfall."

Danielle entered the burrow, finding a huge chunk of dirt flying straight at her. She quickly dodge it, and made herself known. "What are you doing down here?"

Mercutio straightened out a little, "We are enlarging this burrow so we may stay here."

"Stay here? Clock said we had to move."

"Pray thee, move where?" Mercutio raised an eyebrow, then continued digging.

Danielle paused, "Well... I don't know."

"Well, I think we should stay here. It's got food, water... The burrow will be fine once it's bigger. Is there any other reason we can't stay?" Tropa turned her head for a moment, then continued digging.

"I... guess not."

"Then. Why. Leave?" Mercutio curtly stated.

Danielle furrowed her brow at the two odd rabbits, and sighed. Tropa and Mercutio continued to dig, while Danielle went out to find Clock. The sun was setting soon, and everyone would have to turn in.

I've finally read all three

I've finally read all three chapters and I must say that I really like what you've done so far. ^^ You really do a good job in describing the characters, your's or otherwise, and the dialogue is always interesting/fun. I, too, found the "You look... good... as a rabbit..." line rather funny. XD Keep up the great work! I look forward to reading future chapters. Smiling
