dark [Kaoori "challenge"]

There was a swell in the dark; a swell of cobalt blue, swept with stars. A round eye turns toward the sky, black with laces of spots, unnervingly violet, before turning back down onto the shuddering surface of the Pond. The hind smiled ruefully, while the others slept, their chests rising and deepening with each breath of sweet air that they took, complacent in their unconsciousness, placid. She stepped among them, a grace in the dark, a naïve and otherworldly grace like no other. The pond shone in her wake, silver and glorious. How could something be more glorious than she? The thought pestered her for a few seconds before she mildly answered to herself; it wasn’t. It just appeared to be, for she knew that all were always less than she, in value and in appearance. She was beautiful, motherly, kindly, lovely, spirited, pleasant, admirable, gallant, a perfect spirit. As she did often say so herself.
There was a fawn sleeping down by the edge of the pond, shuddering whenever a breeze passed over, disturbingly cool. Kaoori watched with an interest that prickled—such gorgeous interest!—at the little being, so fragile and easily broken. Very easily broken, as it was. Ears flicked. The child was freezing, obvious to her eyes, but she made no move to comfort it. She was simply too good! Although restless in this night, she did not have time for such unimportant matters. She did not even know the creature. It coughed, hacking and sputtering, waking up from its light doze, staring around with frightened eyes. “Mum?” it questioned, hollowly, staring at the blue hind with a stare that could terrify the dead. Lavender eyes, like cold doll’s eyes, stared back into brown irises. “No,” she said simply, and the fawn swallowed, a cold sweat running from it’s forehead.
“Where is s-she?” it asked, sounding afraid as the doe stepped closer, her antlers sleek and black and imposing in the shade. Kaoori’s eyelids were halfway over her irises, her long eyelashes kissing the fawn’s cheeks as she bent her head. The fawn shuddered back. “Gone,” said the hind, peering into it’s face, examining the innocent shape and expression. She remembered her innocent days; not well, they were very vague in her mind, but they were there. She would rather not remember them, however, for they were not her best days…she was much better now. Beautiful, adored, with a proud and admired mate. She was going to give birth to the most lovely child. The most lovely of all. Of all that had ever been born.
The fawn’s pupils had dilated, looking massive and rounded, looking up at her. “Can you h-help me find her-r?” it pleaded, attempting to stand, but Kaoori shushed it in a gentle manner, turning her vision towards the pond. Silver and swarming. A sudden idea came to her mind, and she turned back to the fawn, smiling faintly. “Of course, she went this way,” was all she allowed, before nudging the child and stepping into the shallows. The fawn shivered once more and stumbled to clumsy hooves, pattering after her as the hind disappeared into the reeds. It followed, curious, until it entangled itself, whimpering for help. A dark shape loomed in the extent of it’s vision, becoming stronger and thicker and more distinguishable. And, then, the fawn saw nothing but a shadow, ominous and great.
Until.
There was a great sound, much like a bang, and the fawn fell over, dead. It was still, eyes staring evenly into the night, seeing the view it would see forevermore. Kaoori shook her head, worried that the hit might have bent one of her great antlers. There was a dark spatter of red on her chest, two on her left antler; her right antler looked as if it had been dipped in the substance. The color was pouring from the fawn’s open wound, right in the center of it’s head, gaping and large. The water was twisting in-between colors, blue to orange to red to a faint, murky brown. Kaoori frowned at the sight. The fawn was most likely with it’s mother now, however. How kind of her to do this.
Quiet muttering. She pushed the fawn into the deeper end of the pond, watching in disinterest as it eventually flopped off the steep incline into the depths, where it would decay eternally. The koi swam towards the sight with curiosity, then away just as quickly, repulsed, disappearing into the abyss of indigo once more. She watched it float down, looking untroubled, and rest quietly on the floor, nestled in sand. A nice place to rest. The fawn stared up at her with unseeing eyes, seeing nothing but white, now, and Kaoori dipped her antlers into the water, shaking off the red stains. If anyone asked, she would politely and sadly say that it was too late when she arrived. The fawn was going to die from loss of blood and was gasping for air as water filled it’s lungs. She smiled at the thought.
She watched the dead creature for a while longer, lingering, looking blankly with vivid violet eyes. It wasn’t a sad sight to her, no…she knew the fawn would be happy now. Would it? The sound of steps arrived on the shore behind her. Another doe. “My son?” she heard her whisper, and at once there was a panic, the doe scrambling frantically, her eyes shot and strained. “My child!” she cried still, barely rising above a whisper as other deer stirred. They rose slightly and huffed, returning back to sweet rest. The doe was crying, tears mixing dubiously with the pond water. Kaoori was deaf to her pleas and caterwauls, turning delicately to the night sky. Lovely.
“Oyasumi,” she whispered to the night, partially to the fawn, partially to the koi, partially to herself.
