Her melodious, whistling call sounded throughout the forest, and she tilted her zombie-antlered head, listening for an all-too-familiar call in return.
Danielle waited.
So far, no reply. The antlerdoe sniffed at the air as a gentle breeze carried various scents to her, but a large group of deer were nearby, and their scents masked any other scent aside from the trees and plants. Danielle sighed in annoyance, and began to trot into the foggier, darker part of the Forest fearlessly. She was one of those does that were not innocent and calm; she was flirtatious and aggressive, and a little bit of mist and darkness wasn't about to scare her off. The red, orange and golden markings on her pelt shone brightly against the brown fur as she continued to trot, her hoofbeats light despite her large size.
A wonderful call came to his ears, a wide grin spreading across his creamy face. Blackbrown hooves beat across the foggy earth, a slight trail of light following him as he ran at unnatural speeds. Clock skidded to a stop right infront of Danielle. He had become very good at stopping right where he wanted. His smile grew sweeter as his sparkling blue eyes met hers. "Hey, babe! Haven't seen ya in a while..." He came to her and nuzzled her, sneaking a kiss on the cheek as he returned to his spot. "Crazy weather, huh?" It was odd about the last few days of fog, Clock hadn't changed at all, dispite the fact that sunlight was being cut off from him. He thought his problem was getting better, and he sure hoped so.
---
A sharp gasp came from Danielle as Clock suddenly skidded to a halt infront of her, but she soon grinned and nuzzled him in return, blushing beneath the Golden Butterfly mask as he kissed her cheek. Her heart soared; he was still Clock!
"Yeah!" The antlerdoe laughed, chocolate brown eyes twinkling. "You haven't changed to-- to Cheat or Down Town or anyone..." It was extremely difficult to even try and keep the excitement and relief from flooding her voice. "...So, what's uppp?"
His smile faded a little at the mention of their names, but he kept his happiness together. "I.. I wouldn't get your hopes up... It might not last forever, you know..." He let out a breath and shrugged, "Sorry, that was a bit emo, wasn't it? Well, uhh, whatcha wanna do?"
Something in the back of his mind was bothering him. It made him feel uneasy.
---
Nodding slightly at Clock's words, Danielle smiled. "I dunno. And hey, I can live with it if you do change. I mean, Cheat and Owen are quite nice, really." She grinned at the stag and nuzzled him again, her long fur touching his.
"...By the way, my mom says hi."
Clock smiled and shrugged again, "Well... glad you get along... I suppose you wouldn't like Down Town, would you? Pff, guy needs to cheer up..." He blushed lightly at her nuzzle, nuzzling her back. "Oh yeah, heh... Glad she likes me. That was probably the scariest... Well, I guess meeting your dad will be scarier, won't it?" Just the thought of displeasing that giant stag made him shiver.
Something about the fog was scaring him. It was dulling his senses too much. He tried to shake it off, he was with Danielle, he couldn't go all chicken on her. He tried to get rid of the thoughts by shaking his head, but it didn't seem to work. He hoped Danielle didn't see that, he didn't want to worry her.
---
The antlered doe laughed quietly at the thought of Clock and her enormous orange-pelted, zombie-antlered father meeting. Quamar was intimidating at the best of times, but if he happened to disapprove of Danielle's mate...She almost shuddered.
Danielle frowned as she briefly noticed Clock shake his head, and she tilted her head to one side, almost toppling over as her antlers weighed her down.
"Hey, Clock? Are you allright?"
It was happening, he knew this period of peace wouldn't last forever. He sighed, "I'm so sorry, Danielle, I think I'm gonna change..." He lowered his head, his eyes shut tightly as voices came to his head again. Usually he could tell who he'd become because their voice was the most prominent. This voice... was not familiar. That was scary. "Danielle, don't be scared, but I'm not sure who I'll become... I want you.. to stay.. strong for me......." He couldn't talk anymore, it was too late. The transition had started.
With the last bit of his thoughts, he backed away from Danielle, just far enough so the fog would hide him. Please be someone she can be friends with again...
Danielle's chocolate brown eyes widened as she stared at Clock, and she uttered a quiet, desperate plead of "No.." before Clock backed away from her.
She peered into the darkness, but backed off slightly, her antlered head held low.
Something wasn't right.
A form appeared in the fog, one that seemed to be similar to Clock's. Suddenly the fog wasn't so pleasant anymore. The fog actually put an eery feel to things. An unfamiliar stag stepped towards the doe without care. Several, green glowing orbs were visible, but the rest was a shadow. He kept his distance from the doe, knowing she wasn't the type to ask questions first and charge later.
"Danielle... How nice to finally meet you." His voice was smooth, but hollow. He talked as if nothing could ever harm him. A few steps closer revealed more of his shape, the green orbs became clearer. A single, piercing yellow eye peered at her, tearing through her.
---
Danielle's eyes narrowed as she spotted the green orbs, and she felt herself grow nervous as she examined the stag's shape. She could faintly see the stag's white underbelly, but it was the yellow eye that made her freeze.
It seemed to eat at her soul, clawing its way into her heart and ripping it out there and then. Her voice cracked as she spoke to the stag with the hollow voice, and the fear and apprehension she felt was made all too clear, despite her fierce nature.
"...Who the hell are you?"
And why did she have the feeling that this wasn't someone she wanted to be around?
Another step closer. He could feel her strength weaken. ".. Kerberos." He kept his eye on her, stepping closer and closer to make himself clearer. His pelt was black and white, coming together at a violent horizon. A few scars seemed to mark his body, along with horrid accesories protruding from his back and shoulders. His antlers were the same shape as Clock's, but they were black, and decorated in the middle with five holes in each. His mask was the top half of a skull, sharp fangs curving inward, and a large scar on the left eye. He seemed to have hair on his head, most of it was hidden by the mask. His right eye was covered with bangs, while the left was left open to drive anyone insane.
He came closer to her, now they were only inches apart. He seemed to tower over her, even though they were about the same height. His left eye never blinked, but kept locked on hers. "Don't be so scared. You should be thankful I'm here. Now you can get to know every side of your lover." He smirked, which only made him appear more intimidating.
---
Danielle shuddered as she stared at Kerberos, her ears and tail lowered. Her gaze wandered briefly over the large stag's dark appearance, and she shivered again as it finally came to rest on that piercing yellow eye. Unable to move due to her sudden terror, Danielle attempted to spit back at the stag, but her voice was weak and afraid.
"G-get away f-from me..." She whispered, staring pleadingly up at Kerberos. More than anything she wanted to run, to hide somewhere and never be found, but her legs would carry her nowhere at the current moment.
Kerberos chuckled. "Fine then, I can see you're frightened." He closed the eye, and when he opened it again, he didn't look into her eyes. He started to walk casually around her, "Don't worry, Danielle, I won't lay a hoof on you. Such a pretty face, it would be a shame to see it mangled. I can see why Clock had fallen for you." He stopped infront of her again. A fawn seemed to come up to them, wanting to play, he smiled sweetly, nuzzling the fawn. As his head was still against the fawns, an insane smile came to him. He tore at the fawn's throat, breaking its neck. He looked to Danielle to see her reaction.
Just as he thought, it was priceless. He raised his blood-stained head as the fawn squirmed on the ground, "Just blink and it'll all go away."
---
Danielle let out a silent scream of utter horror as Kerberos tore at the fawn. Her eyes were wide, and she was shaking uncontrollably, staring at the bloodstained fawn in complete terror.
However, she managed to close her eyes tightly, partially because she wanted to believe Kerberos, and partially because tears were threatening to escape from her closed eyelids. She felt so...helpless in his presence.
When the doe opened her tearfilled eyes, the illusion had vanished.
She stared at Kerberos warily, and finally, her legs obeyed her mind's commands and began to carry her backwards, very, very slowly.
How she wished her father was here.
His smile returned to just the devilish smirk it was before. He looked down at the unharmed fawn, "Run along now, the fog won't harm you." The fawn stumbled away, and vanished into the fog. He returned his gaze to her, still keeping his eye away from hers. "Leaving so soon?" He turned to her and crept towards her. "And I thought we were getting along so well..."
---
Danielle watched the fawn stumble away into the darkness, then turned her attention to Kerberos uncertainly. Her ears laid back, she stopped moving suddenly, glaring at the large stag. Although she was still terribly frightened of him, a hint of defiance lingered in her.
"I swear..." She hissed. "Come any closer..."
Her nerve crumbled, and her fire-filled eyes returned to being wide and fearful. Damnit!
Kerberos stopped and tilted his head slightly. She was threatening him? He didn't crumble easily under threats. He chuckled again, this time a little louder, "What will you do? I love the fact that you're trying..." He closed his eyes, pausing for a moment. "You want your father, don't you? I will tell you this now..." Kerberos' image faded into a giant, orange stag with huge red antlers. He stared down at her, "Your father would be no match..." The image of Quamar seemed to crumple and crack with breaking bones until he seemed to be a shapeless orange mass on the ground. Quamar disappeared, leaving Danielle and Kerberos alone again. His smirk returned, he was so tempted to look into her eyes again, but he restrained for now.
---
A sickening feeling made Danielle's stomach churn as she stared at the broken form of her father until it disappeared It's just an illusion, it's not real, he said he wouln't hurt you... She thought angrily to herself, trying to keep calm. But keeping calm in a situation like this was not an easy thing to do.
"Wh..." Her voice cracked again. "...What do you want?" She asked, staring at Kerberos with pleading brown eyes.
She felt as though she was about to collapse.
He simply looked at her. "I want you to know that there is something to fear. No one is completely pure. You cannot feel safe with Clock just yet... You never know when he'll snap like the little twig he is." He stood directly infront of her, looking at her, his smile fading. "Think of it as a friendly warning." He closed his eye again, "If Clock crumbles..." He opened it, looking into her eyes again, You crumble."
---
The dark stag's words pierced Danielle like needles, and she stared into Kerberos' terrible yellow eye in fear.
If Clock fell...So would she.
Was he right?
Part of her agreed with him, but part of her resisted, fighting against the almost hypnotic power he wielded over her.
Friendly warning?
Hah.
"...He...I...No..." Her gaze lowered to the ground, and she felt her body shake uncontrollably as her legs weakened. Danielle began to panic slightly as she felt herself grow dizzy.
She couldn't pass out right now. She couldn't.
His eye narrowed, forcing her to stay conscious. "I believe I've said what I wanted to say." He came close to her, "Never forget my face. It will be a long time until we meet again. I want you to be prepared next time." He almost growled at her, but then backed away into the fog again, his eye never strayed. There was only a shadow now. The green orbs seemed to disappear. His form fell to the ground.
---
Danielle doubted very much that she would ever forget the face of Kerberos, or his terribly piercing yellow eye. She watched, shivering, as he faded, but she could not bring herself to move any closer to the form on the ground.
And though she should have hurried to see if Clock had really returned, she turned tail and fled, her mask flying off of her, tears streaming down her orange face as she struggled to keep breathing, keep running.
It was only when she reached the Pond that she finally collapsed, panting, lying in the shallows of the water weakly.
She doubted she'd ever been so terrified in her life.
Clock's blue eyes snapped open, immediately followed by heavy breathing. He was on the ground, he didn't know what happened or how much later it was, and Danielle wasn't there. Oh god, please, please tell me I didn't hurt her... He tried to move, but he found that he was too weak. What the hell happened?...
He set his head down on the ground again, gathering himself, "DANIELLE!!..." He shouted, hoping maybe that she was nearby. If he couldn't find her...
---
Danielle's eyes snapped open as she heard Clock's familiar voice call for her. What was she doing? She should have stayed where she was and helped Clock, instead of running like a coward...The doe clambered upright, still shivering. She could barely bring herself to take another step, but...
She began to run, her melodious call sounding out, though it sounded terrified and upset.
She ran, she ran...
And then she stopped several metres away from where she knew Clock would be, her head and tail held low. What if it was an illusion Kerberos had created?
Clock squirmed on the ground, frustrated that he couldn't stand. He kicked all for of his legs. "Danielle!... please..." He stopped kicking, and shut his eyes. "Danielle.. Tropa.. someone... someone help me..." He pleaded inside his mind, wanting to know what had happened. The thought of Danielle being hurt or killed by his own hooves made his heart sink. He had to keep trying, "Danielle!... Danielle, where are you?"
---
Danielle's heart almost cracked in two as she heard Clock's pleading, helpless voice calling for her. Clock needed her; she no longer cared if it was a trick. The doe darted forwards, dropping to the ground beside Clock, pressing her maskless head against his neck in an attempt to comfort him. Her voice was still shaky and weak, but she managed to speak.
"I-I'm here, Clock...I'm right here..." She whispered, curling against the stag. "Can...Can you stand...?"
He let out a huge sigh of relief when Danielle came to him. "Thank god, Danielle... Are you hurt? A-are you okay?..." He started shaking, rubbing his head against her, "No I-I can't... What happened?..." This was too much for him. He hoped it wouldn't happen again any time soon.
---
Danielle frowned in concern for her beloved Clock, and she glanced over her shoulder warily. "It doesn't matter right now; you need help..." She wondered if there was a way she'd be able to carry Clock. Perhaps he could pull himself across her back, and she could somehow get to...to the Oak, or something.
Clock nodded, "Okay... Okay, hang on... I think.. I think I can walk a little bit.. I'm sure we could get to the Oak or a willow or something... Just, lemme.." With a grunt, he pulled himself slowly to his feet. He was wobbly and leaned against Danielle's strong frame, and started walking to the Old Oak slowly. Well, this was better than lying on the ground.
---
Danielle walked slowly and carefully beside Clock, being careful not to stumble or do anything else that would cause him to lose his balance. It was only at this time she realised her mask had been left somewhere in the Forest when she'd fled, but right now, she couldn't have cared less.
After what seemed like forever, the two reached the Oak, and Danielle led the brown stag inside.
There were far too many things running through Clock's head. As soon as they reached the Oak, he thought maybe some of those thoughts could be calmed. He flopped over, out of breath. He was so exhausted from... from whatever happened. He closed his eyes, trying to keep newly forming tears in. "I'm... I'm s-sorry..." He didn't feel like explaining what he was sorry about. There were too many things to apologize for.
---
Danielle quietly curled herself beside Clock, allowing his head to rest on her neck as she rested it on the ground. She did not ask Clock what he was sorry for, despite being curious about it.
The image of her broken father, and the squirming fawn entered her mind again, and she closed her dark eyes tightly, shuddering.
