The raven-like stag gracefully stretched his neck up at the night time sky, after sleeping around the for a long while Caesar decided it was time to stretch his injured hoof. He struggled to get up at first, but then proceeded to get up on his slender legs. He put just enough weight on his injured hoof so it would create agonizing pain for him, Caesar has been practicing this for a while, trying out new techniques so his hoof wouldn't become stiff. After a few minutes of trotting around he thought to himself, I should see to Chain, I wouldn't want her to worry again. I also need her to put a new piece of leaf on my hoof, but it'll take me a while to limp to her resting place. Maybe I should wait later on in the day perhaps.
A while later, Caesar started thinking back to when he met Calfuray, Ashes, and Doves. Oh how I miss them, he thought with a long sigh. Once my hoof is healed I should search around the forest for them, it is starting to get quite lonely. Calfuray and Ashes were quite interesting, but they were both kind as ever. But Doves was one of the most compassionate being, we danced together and jumped around. I would like to see her once more, but with the condition that I'm in, I doubt she would want to, he said with a sad glance to the ground.
Caesar sighed once more, all he wanted to do was to get up and run around. He wanted to see his friends once more, he just wanted to be active. Instead he was worthless with an injured hoof, he decided all he could do was just sit and wait for it to heal. But he had the burning desire to speak or interact with someone, no one was around. With another sad look on his face, Caesar yawned greatly and laid his slender head on the cold ground. Just waiting for someone to pass by.
There was restlessness in the
However generous the birds were with their moods, they were quite closed-beaked about everything else. The Gods had already willed it to be dark by the time she finally gave up on her whistled pleas and croons and retreated to the Pond to rest. There was peace among the willows even at night time and a special sort of serenity among the koi (they, at least, did not seemed bothered by much other than frogs and flies), but not much else. None moved or played this late, and the restless still held on to her, refusing to be soothed. So, after a moment's deliberation, she resigned herself to her fate and stood once more, then ventured slowly into the dark.
It was a stupid move, she realized almost immediately, even before the trees closed off the way back. Navigating the forest could be difficult at the best of times, for it was as fickle and playful as the Twins. So she pressed forward, near blind, leaping and fleeing at the tiniest sound until she was as lost as lost could be. Sometimes that was the only way to feel the path that led to all places, placed there by the Gods themselves. They would not wish her into danger, certainly. Unless they wished somebody else out of hunger...
She supressed a gulp and moved on. Another sound had her silent and motionless, the previous thought fleeing out of her head at the same speed fear flew in. There was someone else here. Her nose twitched as she filled it with scents, trying to discern their identity. Fur smelled different on deer and wolves, and the demonics carried their own tang, sometimes pleasant but all the more dangerous for it...
The scent was gathered, pondered over, then recognized. The path's unravelling was good, she decided, for the Gods had led her well. She thanked the Gods in her mind and proceeded with a bit more of a hop in her step, cracking a few twigs to signal her arrival. Until she could glimpse the smell's origin, darker than darkness and lying prone on the ground.
And then she clamped her lips shut, for behind them lay a cry hastily stifled. There was another smell in the air, hidden from her by leaves and merciful oblivion that was now lifted. Another smell, mixed with Caesar's once before and, dreadfully, once again. Harm.
"Caesar?" Softly, at the prone one. "Asleep?" The injured were not to be disturbed, that was known. And yet, she was being rude, distracting death as it lulled him to sleep. Quite brazen of her, really. "Caesar?" But she was quite unwilling to let it have its way.
He heard her before he saw
Not holding back his excitement at all, Caesar stood up quickly, ignoring the pain is his hoof. I have so many questions to ask her, but she'll have so many question for me about my injury and Gods know what else, he said with a joyful look towards Doves. Stepping towards the young deer, he kindly put his slender head atop Doves' head ever so gently. "I haven't seen you in so long, I've missed your company," Caesar said after lifting his head up.
Oh how I hope that she doesn't think I'm a pitiful mess, I do look quite a mess though. Gods, this damn injury cannot heal fast enough, he said looking straight at Doves. All the anxiety was building up inside his mind, ready to start burning like fire. But that fire would have to stay extinguished for an incapable amount of time.
His greeting was too loud for
The thought was too big for her to understand fully, however. So when he came close enough to greet, surprising her a little with the familiarity of it, she simply leaned into the touch by instinct, stretching upward like a cat might. It was not often that she got to do that. Relishing the rare closeness by no conscious thought of her own, she repaid it just as gently and in kind.
"Missed too," she murmured when they parted, eyes wideningas they took in the wrap on his hoof. She looked up sadly, fearfully, smelling the pain more acutely than blood now and feeling it spark an inner tumult of her own. "Why hurt, Caesar?" then, hastily, "Chain?" The silent sister was not there. Why, she did not know. And those things she did not know always worried her.
Loving this so far
------------------------------------------
Caesar realized that his greeting was, indeed, louder than expected as Doves winced.
Wanting to apologize for the surprising loudness he said, "I'm sorry for the sudden rise in my voice, sometimes I do that when I become a little too excited," he chuckled a little more quietly now.
He gave Doves a happy look as she said she missed him. But then as she looked at him with sadness and asked why he was injured he said with a little laugh, "I've been clumsy, I tripped over some rocks and my slender hoof was cut. It's nothing real serious, it looks actually better than it feels. Looks can be deceiving." The young fawn also mentioned his sister's name, with a realization that she was asking where she was, Caesar said, "I'm afraid Chain doesn't like to travel with me, or anyone of the matter. Though she does enjoy my company, she said she only likes to be around myself and you." He also added, "Perhaps both of us should visit her sometime?"
Caesar thought quickly, Chain would love to see Doves and I interacting, she would also like to catch up with Doves. She truly misses Doves, and I think she misses Chain too. It would be great if the two could meet again, perhaps another day.
(Me too!
She appreciated the apology and accepted it with a flick of her ear and a small, serious nod. It masked well how silly she had felt for a moment, jumping out of her skin when a familiar was in sight. But only a moment, and thus the solemnity of her response.
She frowned a little as she pondered his answer. Looks could be deceiving, that was true. It was also true that most of the time they were not. “Wasn’t... someone else?” She pressed gravely, staring up at him with clear eyes. She could not make them opaque, so that he could not see just how much she wished to believe him. But she also remembered the last time Caesar had been 'clumsy'. The chase, and the flight… mostly her own flight. Then there was the last time she had fled, a fawn left in her wake, not suspecting a thing as that time’s ‘someone else’ tore it up.
It was not a good thing to remember in the dark of the woods, so she tried to hide her shiver beneath an eager nod when he spoke of Chain. Yes, it would be good to visit her. She was sedate, and peaceful, and her mere presence could make her feel peaceful too. Together they could be alone without being lonely, and simply observe the forest around them. It did so love to flaunt its grandeur, but only for an
audience utterly captivated.
Sorry for the late reply,
--------------------------------------------------
He gave her another joyful look as she accepted the apology. Caesar didn't want to damage Dove's little delicate ears, he wouldn't really want to hurt anyone. Especially not his close friend, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself.
Caesar was confused as to why she was frowning, he tilted his head slightly to the side. He shook off the though when she asked him a question, he responded in a soft voice, "No, no, it wasn't someone else that caused me to be injured, thankfully. I try to stay out of fights and quarrels, I find peace more appealing."
He thought after his statement,I've always found peace and harmony better than battles and fighting, even in my past forms I've seemed to have had the same opinion
(No problem Ivy, hope you're
She breathed a sigh at his response, feeling somewhat relieved. He seemed content, happy even, and that made her worry subside. "Good." Indeed, peace always was. But there were times when one could not outrun trouble. When your legs could not flee any longer and save you, nor those close to you. On such days hurt came, and fear, for battle was not a forest her spirit could roam unharmed. Why did it even grow? "Why fight, Caesar? Others."
She cocked her head and looked at the raven stag inquiringly as he spoke. Past forms? What an odd thing to say. Her ears swiweled forward as she wondered what stories her dancing friend hid in his feathered heart.
Hehe, I feel much better than
-----------------------------------
Caesar shifted uncomfortably around where he was standing, his hoof was starting to feel inflamed and he was starting to get tired. I haven't felt this weak and tired for many years, I usually can stand for a decent amount of time, this damn hoof is starting to weaken my ability, he thought to himself with a sad glance towards his wrapped hoof. He nodded his dark, slender head at Doves' remark, being careful not to nod too hard. When Doves' asked him a question, Caesar turned his head to the side, confused. Was she saying why do others fight, or why he fights? Thinking that she meant why do other's fight, he said, "I'm not sure why others fight, I mostly think they want to show that they're the strongest, and not to mess with them, but I would never do that. I like being my old self, I like to stay out of those types of things."
Thinking back to his hoof hurting, he said, "Do you mind if we sit? My hoof is starting to become inflamed again and I'm getting tired from standing. I used to be able to stand longer, but I'm afraid my injury has stopped me from being able to do that now." He glanced over at the shady spot where he was sitting before, and then said, "We could share the shady spot right over there, if you don't mind of course."
She cocked her head as she
Wordlessly she shook her head as Caesar spoke of his hoof and supressed a gulp. She moved obediently in the indicated direction, closer to where the darkness was deeper and no light reacher her eyes. It was good place, and not far away, but still but still she kept to the stag's uninjured side as they walked, fearful of tripping him up or otherwise causing a fall.

---------------------------
Caesar nodded to Doves and she was walking with him towards the shady spot, he was glad
that she didn't reject to his offer. He thought to himself, I'm certainly pleased that she didn't object to moving over to the spot, that's what makes her a kind friend. As they arrived at the shaded spot, he huffed at the moss that had once been his bedding. Tiny and large blue and black feather poked out of the moss, hinting that Caesar has been here for quite a long time.
He turned slender head and looked at Doves, then he said with an apologetic look, "I'm sorry for the mess, this has been my resting spot ever since I've injured my hoof." He then added, "Before I was injured, I used to stay close to where Chain slept, but now I fret that I'll trip over the same rocks where Chain sleeps. I suppose that I'll be staying here until it heals."
She ducked her head curiously
"Nest," she stated with some surprise. Indeed it was, to her eyes at least. Soft with moss and decked in feathers, it was a luxury she was surprised anyone would mind, especially Caesar with his injury. Her enthusiasm somewhat curbed by the presence of illness, she plopped down next to the raven stag after he had settled himself. However slight, the motion was enough to send a cloud of smaller feathers upward, their blue sheen betraying them in the dark as it complimented them did during the day. She could feel their phantoms settling on her so she shook her head, ears flapping to and fro, and blue danced once more in the dark.
She nodded seriously at Caesar's explanation and looked into the darkness. It looked back into her with the colour of hurt. She wondered about Chain, imagining how it would feel to stay only where the ground was high and the air clear. Where the silence was near-absolute, but where sometimes even the swift-hooved brother could not go. What a high price to pay! "Miss her?" Softly, without turning her head and keeping her gaze still. It something between a question and a statement, and she could not say with certainty which was hiding behind which.
Sooo sorry for the late
----------------------------------------
Caesar nodded at Doves' examination of his short term nest. Thinking back to his very old nest years ago, he said, "I hardly ever sleep or stay somewhere for a long period of time, after I was injured, I can't move as well as I did. Thus, making it hard for me to visit my sister." After his explanation, he yawned, and moved towards his nest gracefully.
As he sat down, he gave Doves a happy look when she sat down next to him. I'm glad she didn't decide not to sit with me, that would be quite embarrassing for myself, he thought with a light caw of laughter to himself.
Caesar's ears twitched when Doves asked him a question. Her soft little voice was nothing compared to the strange sound in the distance. He shook the sound off after a moment of silence, and then he said, "I do deeply miss her, I used to visit her every sunrise before I became injured. I also believe that she misses me too, considering that she's by herself almost every sunrise of her long life." After he spoke, he immediately heard the same sound again, he then thought, This sound hopefully doesn't belong to something or someone dangerous, I fret that I cannot escape if it comes this way.
(Muse, where hast thou gone?
She heard the sound a moment before Caesar did, ears first twitching and then snapping towards it as it sounded from a smaller distance. Her legs repositioned beneath her, going from relaxed to ready to run, but she did not yet stand up. Carefully, carefully, she peeked over the curve of Caesar's back (even when lying down he was taller than her!), eyes straining to make sense of the black...
So sorry for the late reply :
------------------------------------
He had a sense of security when the road-like sound was heard again. He felt the little body of Doves peak over his dark shoulder, he huffed and put his head atop of her's. "I will try and protect you Doves if a predator comes this way, but if something happens to me promise to me that you'll run," he said with a warning caw to the area where he heard the frightening sound.
After a few moments with Doves close to him, the sound had not been heard again by Caesar. He said very angrily, Whoever made that frightening noise should be ashamed, there are little ones all over this forest, it scares them very much! He got up for a brief moment to stretch his long, slender legs, he looked all around to see if anything frightening was headed their way, but he saw nothing. Caesar sat back down with an annoyed huff, he thought to himself, Whoever made that noise got Doves and I alerted, I will not take it easy next time if it happens again. But what could he do if something really did try to harm them? He can not fight, but he will do all of his best to try and protect his dearest friend, Doves.
(bump)
Caesar's beak did not lie
Caesar's beak did not lie still among her curls. Its movement jolted her head slightly from side to side as serious, terrifying words tumbled out. To go? To flee? To leave him alone, here, in the dark? She had considered it, even expected it, but now her gaze slipped from the darkness and towards him, insecure. Can’t, she wished to whine imploringly. Can’t, Caesar, not right. Except that she could, and probably would. After all, she already had.
Her throat pulsed with agitation and not a small amount of guilt as Caesar stood up and she followed, not wishing for him to roam too far away of herself to be left behind. Keeping close as he shouted into the dark, she puffed what little fur she had and listened intently for the thing that was now moving to the other side of the glade. Barely rustling the branches now it knew it was noticed. Circling.
And then moving upward.
Surprised by the direction, she craned her head backwards and desperately tried to find the thing with her eyes, as the rest of her was reminded of the promise the dear raven stag had requested and acted on it. She would later wish that her heart wasn’t in it, and lie herself to sleep. But now her legs betrayed her, slipping on the slick feathers and soft moss. She stumbled backwards with a startled tweet, and bumped heavily into the now seated, still wounded stag. A light pattering of falling leaves and broken twigs sounded as debris was moved by the creature above.

----------------------------
Caesar heard and saw the creature above them, his dark eyes widened as the creature popped out from the treetops. From what he could see the creature had wings, and very sharp teeth, and it's whole body seemed to be covered with sharp needles. It's eyes seemed to be blank, and hungry, staring right into Caesar's soul. He shook off the hypnotizing glare from the creature as it continued to stare at him and Doves, he murmured some curses and whispered to Doves, "Stay right behind me, if anything happens to you I'll never forgive myself young one, don't run until I tell you to."
He turned his slender head to the hideous creature that stood in the treetops right above his nest, his injured hoof still held above the ground. He gave a low warning call at the creature above telling it to back off. The creature seemed to not like to be cawed at, it gave a very loud growl towards Caesar. Caesar's eyes started to widened in fear, but he stood his ground. But in that same moment, the creature leaped out of the trees towards Doves. He didn't have the time to think. His sharp beak penetrated through the creature, Caesar could feel the sharp needles pricking him through his feathers. Dark blood splattered all over Caesar and onto the ground as the creature made a deafening screech.
The creature laid still, blood still pouring from the huge hole through it's neck. Caesar felt his heart racing as his body began to glow slightly, dark spots edged his vision as he said, "Meus phasmatis mos nunquam intereo." He looked at Doves when he said this, and darkness covered his vision as he dropped to the ground, passed out.
