What's up with referring to this as "crappy" and "poo"? You're not being fair to yourself!
I really like the texture of his hair and your shading! Fair to mention that drawing deer laying down is pretty difficult--they have pretty strange joints if you ask me. To tackle a challenging pose like that is brave of you c:
Ohthankya~ I'm still trying to work on the hair, right now I'm only using a certain brush and curving it to give flowy strokes. But making it more stringy and silky is quite the challenge. The laying pose is quite difficult really, I still haven't figured out how to make it so the front hooves can be seen sort of sticking up as the deer is laying. Not to mention thinner legs and more hoof appearance.
What I do is make a separate layer for shading, and then another for highlighting. Then I go back to my colour layer and use the dropper/colour selector to acquire the base colour. Then go back to shading and adjust the base colour sample to a colour darker than the original and shade in certain spots and use the smudge tool. I do the same for highlighting but using a lighter colour of course. xD
