no they arent. in my opinion they are the closest to human when it comes to compatibility [except dogs] but its a lot more work than people usually think. you have to put a lot individual initiative when it comes to species-appropriate husbandry. also not every vet is familiar with them. [once, one of them wanted to treat them with gloves on, to prevent beeing bitten pfffffff...]
anyway, heres a FaQ i like to share, its a really good one for starters.

i got 3 rats now, i wanted to add two more to the pack but one of them new ones was a female and i have to give her away again ):

Oohh this made me remember about when I had a lot of zebra fish...
I was too lazy to name them, since they're pretty small, but to tell them apart I called them something like "The Big Fat", "The grumpy" "The Tiny", "The long-finned one", and my favorite... I don't know how his name would be in english but it was something like "The amazing one" xD or something like that...
They are really small fish... but it's amazing how they seem to have personalities. *_* and hierachies.
(I have this obsession with fish... been having fish for almost 5 years and haven't got bored of them, specially love bettas 8D, OK I'll stop babbling now x.x)
We adopted him from an association, so we thought he was a common cat, not of any particular breed, but now I'm thinking he may be a snowshoe *_*
I think he looks pretty similar to that kitty on the left of the picture, and his personality fits very well with what I've read about them :3

its just cause, the time i getting to know them, i used to call them "brown" and "white" and it seems to fit (:
I had one who unfortunatly died not long ago, he was nuts, had spiderman moments in his cage (they need a lot of space, but building your own cage can be a lot of fun), and was very expressive.
I swear he would tell me about his day, in his own alien language, each time I came back home.

regarding degus: I had some a few years ago. They are great pets -> diurnal, easily tamed, they make upper cute sounds, they have a life span of ~5 years and they are simply nice animals. Just don't grab them on their tail... ._."
