General symbolism:

Suetonus, a roman historian, defined the raven cries, as “cras”, which means “tomorrow” in latin, granting it a hopeful connotation (in opposition to The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, where the animal cries “nevermore”.)

And althought you seemed more interrested in occidental symbolisms, there are some really interesting stuffs to dig in orient/north American mythologies and cosmogonies:

One day the Raven became so bored with bird land that he flew away, carrying a stone in his beak. There is also a tale about how a raven stole the sun and brought the light to humans. Try to search for it in german if you’re interrested.
In China, it’s a solar bird. 10 ravens have brought light to the world, but 9 were killed by Yi fearing the light may consume everything. One was left and has been represented with 3 legs, its body caged in the sun.
German mythology:
I guess this is the most famous part.
There were two ravens perched on Odin's trone, nammed respectively Huginn (meaning "thought" in old Norse) and Muninn ("memory"). Both represented the principle of creation opposed to the two wolves accompaning the god, representating the principle of destruction. The two ravens were send to roam over Migdar ( world of the humans) and came back during the night to whisper what they saw and heard to Odin.

Whether in manga, comics, animes and cartoons, the variety is far from lacking.
The "big eye" style is maybe the most popular, but manga means " caricatural/whimsical style" and Disney, a few years back, was just as much over-abusing this chara-design. Mangas, in essence, are a great heritage of japan cultural art= work on empty spaces, flowing lines and purged content ( really brievly and messily summarized).

But if I see it's manga style, I don't like it. Probably also because everyone else likes it.
If I can't see the manga style, which means to me terrible proportions, exaggerated expressions, tiny noses (I HATE tiny noses >:-/), too long legs, strange hair and so on, it's ok. It's like every other comic then, I mean it was created from american comics. But I won't be interested in a cartoon just because it's manga. And japanese culture might be interesting, but there are sooooo many other cultures which aren't that exploited

My problem with manga is that I think the important ting about comic is to find your own style. But everyone is copying those goggle eyes! And Disney invented that style, which was taken by the japanese. He invented it. So I've nothing against it.
