I don't know about you, but I would kill to play as a grumpy old stag all day. It'd be as fun as playing as a fawn, except better because you get to
nag at all the younger players.
After you play The Endless Forest for a year(?), you can get the option to play as an Elder Stag. The option would be accessible in the Display Menu, much alike the Fawn Option.
There's more under the cut though, but beware, it's going to be heavy with images as I post more and more Elder pelts.
I got the idea from Sharptwoth mentioning it at
this thread, by the way. But I wanted to make a separate thread about it since it hasn't been discussed thoroughly before -- at least to my knowledge.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Elder Stags would have gameplay mechanics similar to that as a fawn's. Because your magic isn't as strong as it used to be, pelts, masks, antlers, etc. will wear off over time. On the bright side, you have access to exclusive pelts like the one below.
Real Deer Pelt -- Elder Stag with the OLDER real deer pelt on the left, normal adult with the "normal" version of the pelt on the right.
The Elder's fur is supposed to look dusty/dirty/matted/old but screw it. Also didn't ant to use an actual in-game image of the pelt because none of my deer have it.
I'll be posting more "Elder" versions of pelts from time to time, by the way.
Elder pelts function like fawn pelts. Some look slightly different from their former selves, others look exactly the same, and then there are the completely exclusive pelts that look RADICALLY different from the rest (kind of like the Purple Sugar Plum fawn pelt).
Without any magic on you, you would just be grey with equally boring antlers -- much like the Version 1 deer -- except more grumpy.
Additionally, playing as an Elder Stag would make you taller and lankier than those pesky youngsters. However, by default, your antlers would be broken off to exaggerate your age, so don't expect into getting many fights.
Like a fawn, mooing would also sound different. Instead, it would be noticeably weaker, and much quieter. Though I'm not sure if we should have elder stags sound like dying animals, or like cute, dainty old deer. Either way, I would still be using it to yell at fawns to get off my lawn.
Also, I'm thinking that maybe the Elder Stag option should be an unlockable feature?
For example, players have to wait a year(?) in real time in order for it to appear on their display menu? Or maybe something similar?
I don't know, what do y'all think about this?
This thread is also going to be rewritten after I get more pictures done, because I need to put the default up at the very top, and I don't have it yet at the moment.
Also art is definitely not my forte, so pardon the poor lineart and messy coloring.
I actually find this concept
I like it. c:
Yesssss. Yesyesyes all my
I actually like this idea a
The only negative I can think of, is that it might oppose the idea that the creatures of TEF (despite what players determine for their characters) are ageless.
What do you think?
I figure it would be like the
@ravynn I always thought that
Unless M&A actually stated somewhere that the TEF animals are ageless, and I just missed it.We also have the Version 1 deer, who are meant to look old and withered, so I'm not sure if our deer are exactly ageless at all.
So I guess it could still work, especially since it's just an option to make your deer older.
The idea is still on shaky ground though, because I accidentally implied that the deer are mortal with "you're getting weaker, so you can't hold onto your magic quite as long" schtick. My bad.
I'm not against the idea of having the Elder Stag having permanent masks/pelts/antlers though. But I wouldn't want them to be purely aesthetic mechanic. Fawns aren't just there for looks, because they are in the game to help new players to get a hold of things -- so neither should Elders. Plus they're youth is emphasized with their inability to hold onto spells as well, so I thought the same could work for elders to emphasis their age.
Though I don't have that many ideas on how to make the Elderly Stag feature that purposeful. The only things that are stuck in my mind is that they can be mirror foils ((as in - polar opposites)) to fawns, or that they have access to "level 2" magic spells or something. I never mentioned the latter in my original post though because that would be asking for a MUCH bigger update.
This is also kind of another reason why I'm curious to what other players would think about this option and how it would work, because I have a tiny brain. I totally forgot/neglected to mention this in the post.
@thelittleraven Yes, that's how it would work. Though exactly how long that time would be, I'm not entirely sure.
@everybody else - I'm glad you liked it!
Sorry, poor word choice. I
I was just proposing that the idea of reflecting old age in the game might be a thing, is all.
I think its a great idea.
Oh ok. xD Now that I reread
Now that I reread my post, I feel a bit bad for pulling out all my guns at once (even though I didn't mean to - that was my VERY POOR attempt at being modest but I came off very snarky instead). Not that I hate people disagreeing with me, I actually love it since it makes for an interesting conservation -- but I always end up accidentally intimidating people from being...you know. It's an old habit of mine because I came from a community that debates a lot. I'm actually trying my best to break my habits. I NEED TO UNLEARN THESE THINGS.
Sorry about that.
This would be so epic.
This is a pretty cool idea. I
All I can think of for suggestions is, players may not want to go through the annoying spell fading off deal again after the fawn stage- I know I'd find it hard to tackle with if I wanted to play an older deer. Them being bigger is a nice aspect too, but what if some players start using it only for that option? You know, those ones who need to feel like they're the strongest. Not that there's anything wrong with having bigger characters, just some may act very high and mighty. Then again maybe the one year thing erases that..?
Also personally, you didn't come off as intimidating at all. <:
I love this idea! Also...
.
What if, instead of elder
they could have a chance for their spells to "backfire" on them and change their appearance instead of the intended target?
I mean, it wouldn't be all the time (like "Hey, I'm an elder; I can change my own appearance now. Heck yeah!") but would be a thing that accidentally happens sometimes. I dunno, I just think it'd be cute. lawl
Oh my, new responses! Sorry,
@Evern
I would assume the 1 year wait would eradicate that urge.
And thank you. <3
@Wonderfully Sarcastic
To be honest, mooing doesn't annoy me. But I would use selective hearing to make my deer go, "WATCHYA SAY, SONNY-BOY?"
@grammarshine
Backfiring spells would make me laugh my arse off.
I can just imagine a troll trying to cast a shapeshift spell on someone -- then watch as they accidentally give themselves the worst pelt makeover ever. That'd be fun to see.
I really like this idea.
