Nuzzles are basically just a point system the site has. They're kind of like a post count on a forum; it keeps track of how many diary entries, comments, and pictures you post on the site. (I think you get five nuzzles for entries and comments.)

In a way, it allows people (and yourself) to see how much you contribute to the community. If you have a high nuzzle count, then you probably have a lot to say (not that that's a bad thing). If you have a low nuzzle count, you probably don't hang around the site as much as other people or at least you don't have a lot to say.
