Original writing prompt:
At one time, it was a deer.
There is a point where deer just grow old, and they die. She did lay down and die. Her body, left in a thicket, decomposed. The magic that filled her was reabsorbed back into the earth in order for the earth to protect her bones...
Foliage rustled in that place several years past her death.
A pictogram winked into existence above her head once more... only that head was no longer flesh and bone. Gnarled bark created round space where the eyes of the creature should have been. A delicate wooden head rose from the earth as far as it could manage, before vines stopped the ascent. She found herself still tethered to the ground on which she had given her last breath. Now expressionless, the entity could only inwardly scowl as she moved forward one vine-and-wood appendage to gain leverage. She forced herself up.
Clods of soil and bits of foliage rained down as the vines that tied the doe down snapped free. Roots spread like fur over what was once her stomach and lower-extremities. Leaves rustled on her back and shoulders like the scales of a long-ago beast. The re-animated old bones still hid inside the years of foliage that had overtaken the space where flesh once held domain.
