The season had rolled over to the sunny underbelly of summer. The birds were eager with their songs as fluttering clusters of decorated wings of pollinators dance around fields of flowers and antlers alike.
Within the excitement of the forest friends and wobbly fawns,
Something irked you. . .
Since you stumbled upon the bell within the veil of winter, you swore something dogged your heels.
It wasn’t always there, for this feeling came and went. When this heavy atmosphere slithered around you, you’d feel yourself grow cold.
On this day in particular, this feeling felt enhanced and stronger where uneasiness lapped at the nerves of your back.
It was of any seemingly ordinary day.
The trees hushed amongst one another.
The fawns droned in the distance along with concerning and expressive adults.
The sun patches gleamed and the squirrels scurried along with their seasonal errands.
As your feet thudded upon lush grass with the occasional crunch of a leaf or two, your head was held in an alert and stiff wariness.
You felt this feeling slide across your face..
Down your sides..
Over your very being with a feeling of cold static.
Glancing to the side, ears rotating to every little sound, heightened in your cautiousness, you suddenly did feel the unwavering endlessness this forest truly was.
The depth caused your heart to hit against your chest cavity in a quick flight of prancing panic like that of realizing you were lost.
Pinning your ears far back and tucking your rear in a moment of a trotting avoidance, you couldn’t help but turn to the side a bit as your strides came to a stop.
You stared. . .
Staring. . . .
Trying to find the source of this incredible uneasiness that lingered behind you.
As you stared, the warm breeze felt like it did when it belonged to winter. You furrowed your brows, swearing to yourself that you could hear the faint chiming hums of bells.
The harder you listened, the thicker the atmosphere became, more and more birdsong and any other warm summer sounds dissipated.
You shifted your stance while you scanned the horizons of the forest, afraid to finally see the source yet almost desperate to, hoping to rid yourself of this hazy turmoil of the air.
Krr….krrrkk..
Your attention snapped to that of the canopy of the trees. The breaking and creaking of limbs within the moans of leaning trees as if in a harsh wind queued your nose and back to tingle harshly as your eyes began to brim with warmth.
For you knew it wasn’t the wind that made the trees protest.
You just knew for your intuition stiffened and barked at you of something coming.
You tear into the ground with your hooves/paws, frantic to elude this eeriness. You almost want to cry, but you also just want to find a place where it can’t follow you or find you anymore. You catch between the roaring wind by your ears and your galloping that of something not belonging to anything in the forest you’ve ever heard. Run. run. RUN. RUN!
Like a fawn, your ears lower and your body scrunches as you stare at this invisible force. Your eyes become glassy with fear. Knowing it won’t leave you, no matter how far you run in the forest, you yell at it in all your desperation.
For a moment, nothing changes, but as the breeze picks up, the coldness ebbs away and the warmth of summer envelopes you once more.
Not being able to escape and control this feeling only angered you. You replace your uneasiness with courage and a challenging demeanor as you stamped your feet sturdy into the ground.
“I’m not afraid of you! Leave me alone! You have no power over me!” You exclaim in a defiant tone.
As your voice echoed about, it merely spurred on more cracking from the trees and a hefty drop in temperature. Now branches fell with the shower of leaves as your courage fought against the now well fed fear.
You witnessed for a while this strange phenomenon, yet instead of reacting out of fear or any other negative emotion, you closed your eyes and calmed yourself. Instead of taking the sound of the bells as something eerie, you welcomed them, finding that once you did, the bells became somewhat comforting. The air wasn’t an uncomfortable cool but more of a refreshing one.
You begin to feel pressure against your third eye as you feel a presence growing very close to your face. You steady your heart as you believe to hear a whisper among the bells now. Curious at the growing presence, you open your eyes to find nothing there.
The trees silenced, the breeze died, and gradually birdsong and other forest dwellers filled the air as warmth came once again.
You stared ahead before glancing around, wondering where it all went.
