The stag's eyelids had graduall begun drooping and were almost closed in sleep when he felt his mother stir from beside him. At first he took no notice but then suddenly realized what was happening and jumping to his feet, a little stiff from sitting so long but nowhere near as cold as he should have been thanks to Veil's heat.
"Veil?" he asked, startled. He quickly got over his surprise and sat down again, rubbing his neck against hers. He was wary of physical contact with other deer, but he craved any sign of affection from his family and loved to reply in kind. He laughed at how Veil moved her ears and tried to do the same, but instead ended up flicking droplets of water onto his magpie mask. Despite this his own white teeth gleamed in his dark face when he looked at his mother.
