What inspires you? [Quad Hummingbird]

quadraptor's picture

Friends and loved ones, young and old
My time has come, I shall depart from this Forest
The Hummingbird Migration is not a permanent destination
But rather our yearly pilgrimage to better ourselves
Shed no tears, my journey will be safely traveled
And look to the trees once Spring has blossomed
For I will return to share my enlightenment next year

To all dreamers and artists of all kinds,
Gaze your eyes on the world around you.
The small ones are always watching,
Looking for the one moment to appear.
And on the day they come to you,
Count your blessings, and answer their question:
"What inspires you?"

This variety looks quite a bit like Quad, aside from the back being green...

Umm...I hate to be a bother, but...

Could someone draw a Quad Hummingbird for me? Just a blue and white one. You can give him any look and markings, just make his colors blue and white (you can add red, brown, or dark blue in as well, those are optional) Here's some references

Thank you guys XD

Oh my gosh, I love hummingbirds. <3 I had the idea for a hummingbird char using the dove spell too, but I didn't use it. XD Oh, and I'm sure all the ponies wouldn't mind that. |D Derpy certainly wouldn't. ♥

Nature has offered a gift this morning
The cold winds of Autumn have come
Her caress is gentle and powerful
And soon the trees will fall into slumber
The leaves will change their hues for her
The hotness of Summer is nearly gone
And thus, my favorite season is here

I decided to try something,

I decided to try something, and it was so worth it. Instead of standing inside the house and looking out at the feeder like I have been, I took the dogs out and stood out in the sun closer to where it was at. Standing perfectly still, I waited for a few moments, just watching.

During that time, I saw three hummingbirds. One of them may have been the same one, as the two that actually fed on the feeder were green with grey/white bellies. The other one I saw I believe is the one who has been chasing off the others, it's a ruby-throated that is guarding the area. It hovered close to the feeder but then flew off.

This one I keep seeing that is green and white looks much like the first one that appeared before Mom and myself. Since I don't know it's variety, I'm calling it a Quad Hummingbird. In the shade it looks more greyish, but I saw the green back in the sunlight.

Anyway that was a great experience, I was only out there for a few moments too.
trigger_mortis's picture

That's great that they came

That's great that they came around while you were outside! They can be funny little critters. Smiling

It sounds like you have both male and female ruby-throated hummingbirds. They're pretty common, and the females lack the distinctive ruby throat that the males have.

Watch out for the male though, they can be territorial and will actually take dives at people if they feel like their territories are threatened!
quadraptor's picture

You know what, that DOES look

You know what, that DOES look like the one I keep seeing. I didn't know the females don't have the ruby throats, so I just thought it was a different variety. Thanks for letting me know!

The male has been sitting on the trees very close to where the feeder is at, so I'm surprised he keeps chasing off the females if those are the ones that are trying to feed. Of course they zip by so quickly that it's really hard to tell which is which.
trigger_mortis's picture

The species is a solitary

The species is a solitary one, so even members of the same species they'll try to drive away from the food in their territory. Particularly right now, since they're getting bulked up for their migration, they will be especially aggressive. Smiling

Every second lost forever

What is the dream of the hummingbird?
Fields of flowers, forests of seclusion
A place to call our own, without territorial worry
But alas, we live in the real world
We must fight for our crown and land
It is a shame that we refuse to learn unity
But survival in our world seems to be essential

The rain has come and gone
The bird seed washed away
But it is lovely to still see nectar there
Does the rainwater sweeten it?
We shall have to see
The humid morning beckons us all
But we continue even after the storm

I actually did see a hummingbird this morning when I stepped outside. I was bummed that the bird seed I had put out earlier got washed away in the rain, but the hummingbird feeder is still full.

On a silly note, Quad Hummingbird still has Quad's Grand Talux powers, so he comes back to life if he dies. That means that sitting on him, cuddling him too tightly, ect will kill him but he'll come back to life a few moments later. It doesn't necessarily mean he'll LIKE getting squished to death, but...it's acceptable if it happens Eye

I love hummingbirds; they're such brave, cheeky little creatures for their tiny size. When I was younger, I used to sit very still by the hummingbird feeder, and they'd come up and drink right in front of me. Sometimes they'd fly down and hover before my face for a second - not at all afraid to look a bigger creature right in the eye!

I couldn't resist making a wee Quad hummer. :3

quadraptor's picture

FFFFF that is an adorable

FFFFF that is an adorable Quad Hummingbird! He's so pudgy! XD!! Thank you :3

Yeah the ones we have right now keep chasing each other around the back yard. But when I get to see them sit and drink the nectar from my feeder, it makes me really happy because I actually made it for them. I also see butterflies land on it and drink too!

It was that one day where the hummingbird flew up to me and Mom that started all of this. Since then, I've been obsessed with them, and keep looking outside every hour or so to see if there's one on the feeder. Sometimes they're there, sometimes I don't see them, but I know they're hanging out in the tree.

A gift for you, Chris

I wish my hummingbirds were this social. I may have to move my feeder from the treeline. I have a place that it could hang out in the open, so that's a possibility.

Or I could buy a 2nd feeder for that spot and leave the first one where it's at.

Edit -

I ended up moving the feeder a few feet away from the treeline. It's out in the open now, so hopefully those hummingbirds who have been flying up to it are not crossing into the territory of the male hummingbird who keeps chasing them away, where it originally was under the trees.

I felt bad for moving it at first because I saw him swoop down five or six times looking for it, and then fly back up into the trees, but eventually, he spotted it where I moved it at and flew over. So I feel better now because despite him being possessive of it, he still can feed from it. He just has to fly a little farther now. But this way, the other ones who are flying by can get to benefit from it.

I hope this works better.

Edit #2 -

Oh well, I ended up moving it back to where it was because I don't think the hummingbirds felt safe out in the open, and also the shade apparently is better for the feeder since the sunlight makes it too hot and does stuff to the sugarwater. I guess there's nothing I really can do about that one male, he's going to keep chasing the others off when they get close to the feeder.

I'm so jealous. I wish we could have hummingbirds here but alas, we have to go to botanical gardens and the likes if we want to see anything of the sort. ;_; And that baby hummingbird video was adorable!

They're among my favorite birds too, and I see them all the time here. They love our feeder in the back yard. You always know that if one is there eating, their mate is somewhere close by. I was really surprised at how brave the female cardinal was this morning. She just kept eating while we were outside. Most of the time the birds fly off as soon as I open the door.

I also never realized they can raise and lower their crests like cockatiels! I was watching her with binoculars earlier and when she would bend down to pick up a seed, her crest would flatten, and then when she was alert her crest raised up. You learn something new every day!

Rest, my friends, the night shall protect you

Oh what a magical moment I

Oh what a magical moment I just experienced! I went outside and put some new seed out for the birds, and as I was standing underneath the hummingbird feeder, a beautiful female ruby throated hummingbird came up and started feeding! I was within a few feet from her, and she still had the courage to come so close!

She would pick one of the feeders on the other side of where I was standing, so I had to move over a little to where I could see her. And then she would fly back for a moment, make a noise, and then perch and feed again. She did this a few times before flying off.

And here's the best thing - I stood out there for maybe 5 minutes, and I saw her at least 6 times! She came back to feed about every minute!

Maybe I'll try taking my camera out there, and if I'm lucky I can get a picture of her. She was so adorable when she would fly back and make a noise, she sounded like a little squeeky toy! I wonder what she was even saying...

Anyway, I just wanted to share this! This is the closest I've been to them, and I'm really happy that she trusted me enough to come feed while I was so close!

I think Quad Hummingbird will have something to say about this soon

She approached without caution
And fed without considering you a threat
Her eyes met yours briefly
As she hovered for a moment
And her words were like whispers
You only heard squeaks and peeps
But she was saying "Thank you" before flying off

I tried my very best to take a picture of one of the hummingbirds on my feeder, and I came very close, but of course the camera was stupid and zoomed in on the fence behind rather than the feeder.

So I need to stand back a little bit and hopefully it'll be better next time.

I have a picture of a hummingbird perched in the tree in the garden. I have a huge butterfly bush that the hummingbirds prefer over our feeders- lots of them come at once to the tree. Of course, like your camera, mine never takes the pictures right. And the one of the hummer in the tree is blurry, but you can still see her. So tiny. I love to watch them.
