Today La was talking to Trout about nursery logs and Rossamund hopped up onto a stump and I thought a bit about the stumps for the first time in a while.
Who cut the trees down? Seriously, think about it.
-Deer don't have axes
-There are no appropriately sized logs lying on the ground next to the stumps
-The stumps, like the log piles you can jump over, are relatively fresh and unrotted
So who do you think did the thing? Any and all explanations and stories are good to go and I would love to hear your/your deer's headcanons and thoughts.
Due to circumstances in La's life, she believes that it is the work of Glitches.
Since the Tale of Tales site
"An old bridge allows access to the other side of the stream, although for deer, jumping over it is far more convenient. Where are the people who built and used this bridge? Did it serve the monks when they went to mass in the cathedral? When did the humans disappear? Or did they not?" - The Pond.
"Fitting with the romantic picture of our forest, we created a ruin of the gothic Saint Salvator church, based on actual measurements." - The Ruin.
And of course, these are backed in game with:
- The Old Woman. (Abiogenesis event.)
- The plane shadow/engine sound. (Abiogenesis event.)
- The cabin [in the woods, hurrhurr]. ("The Path" release special event.)
- Jesus's likeness appearing on a grave in the Ruin.
- (Speculative.) The semi-Greek-looking-human carvings decorating the Ruin.
- De Drinkplaats fountain.
- The Crying Idol/Pagan Idols.
- Perhaps even the Twin Gods, though I speculate they are a new type of magic appearing after the human concepts of Christianity and Paganism, alongside The Endless Forest stags.
I actually have a semi-joke character who's a kind of reporter/paranormal enthusiast type who runs around trying to interview Forest denizens to learn more about "humans."
But anyway, that's just me. Considering mine is just rooted in what I've read, my idea is probably pretty boring. xD
Ooh, I'd never heard of the
My deer La is also obsessed with humans, but she's of the opinion that humans haven't been in the forest for a long time. It makes her sad to only investigate and read about them and never get to run into any in the forest.
I've jokingly proposed a few human characters (one was sort of a shameless tarzan ripoff who is stranded in The Forest, the other two are amateur wizards in a deer costume trying to learn forest magic by getting deer to cast pelt spells on them) but for the most part I tend to think that humans have been gone from The Forest for centuries. The St. Salvatore church that the Ename Ruins are based on was originally built in, I think, the 12th century. And seeing as there are planes that can fly overhead, we know that The Forest is at least in the 20th century. Or maybe it's timeless?
The pagan statues, graves, ruins, those are all very old and I tend to imagine that they all run on magic these days.
The old woman is a model
The Cabin was a model taken from "The Path" itself, and just sat around in the forest for (I think) about a week, in the birch. I wasn't there for either event, so I'm not entirely certain on those facts.
Same with my little to-myself character: just digs the things which happen to have Endless Forest deer faces. (I still get a kick out of her perspective, since obviously, to TEF deer, humans are the weird-looking ones.)
I've read about both of those, and loved both of the ideas. That poor photographer, and I was horrified--in good humour--to have the Rut associated with the Magicians. Here's to hoping they aren't in for much of a surprise, should they come to be as more than simply concepts.
I also agree with the notion that it's likely been some time since humans were around, though, as well, perhaps time works differently in TEF. After all, a day there varies in length, and can be many months here. Who's to tell. Regardless, definitely an interesting thing to think on.
I can't imagine being a deer
Sometimes I think that the deer in The Forest are descended from the humans who used to be there and that they were changed with magic at some point. Hence the little "or did they?" on the pond page. The sheer number of possibilities for headcanons and explanations serious or silly and open ends in general is pretty great. Imagination is fun~
Recently I've been wondering about how deer interpret glitches after one happened to my character and I decided to roll with it. She now believes that glitches are the work of specific entities that run around The Forest and cause trouble--I'm going to see where that takes things. But I think that is who my deer would be most likely to blame given the human exodus.
Oh, and I'm glad you got a kick out of the humans. The wizards in the suit is something I think I'm going to re-use for a Dungeons and Dragons game at some point, but they will be pretending to be a unicorn.
Oh, most definitely. That's
Oh that'd be a trip. But I like the idea--I'd considered something like that as a possibility, just due to the circumstances, due to the faces. Headcanons are my jam.
Excellent notion. I've been doing something sort of like that with a character of mine lately as well, in fact a little bit inspired by your own thoughtfulness, as well as his general outlook. It's been interesting, at least, seeing the forest with fresh eyes.
Goodness me, you must be fun. Don't be too hard on the DM with that creativity.
P.S. Don't mind that old brown thing using my pictogram--just a character of mine I haven't found a good pictogram for. He's a little strange. The lack of bow is not meant to be offensive.
There are just so many
The brown deer didn't bother me at all. I got kind of a lost-in-his-own-world-awed-by-minutiae vibe from him, and I thought it was neat that the dragonflies were really crowding him for a while. La is virtually never offended anyway.
Oh I know. Much like some
I'm personally still interested in the second to last sentence about the Old Oak. As I've seen from you, La has quite a thing about that tree. Wonder what will happen.
Oh good--I'm happy to read that. That's a good way to read him.
Ha! That's cute--I actually hadn't noticed. He'd like that, I think.
I had a feeling, but it never hurts to clarify.
La's terrified of that tree.
I think of The Old Oak in my headcanon as being the pagan equivalent of the christian ruins--old, spiritual, a good place to hang out, but still holding some kind of power. That hasn't really occurred to La.
That sentence on the ToT site has been there for years, unfortunately... I hope that someday they have the time and money to implement whatever it was that they had in mind. If La was with one of The Gods, she would be less frightened about The Old Oak I think, especially if they changed some element of it.
About the stumps... I do not

Vala you never interfere. I
I thought I had heard falling trees but I was never quite sure. Do you think they fall on their own or that someone cuts them down?
Of course, of course. Very
Yeah, I realized that as well. It may just end up being something like the description of how they'd intended the game to go at one point--though, with the new sets, I think it's totally reasonable to be optimistic about changes coming in the future, even though it may be distant.
I hope that new things will
Indeed, definitely. Cautious
@ Vala's comment.
I'd always noticed that and was going to bring it up here, but spaced it. From the marks on the trees, I'd say they're cut. As for the sounds, it's impossible for me to tell whether they're falling, or being felled.
That said, the cuts are not the same as traditional tree-cutting markings would leave. (Aka, cutting a notch to guide the tree to fall a specific direction. These cuts are flat.)
Strange forest stuff, man.

@Vala: Oh my goodness that's the best thing ever. Easter eggs are delightful.
I love the eggs, oh my gosh.
As for that, they still use a notch (most always--I have a weird lumberjack history, my last name even means "Grove" xD) just for safety/maneuverability. Especially in a place as, presumably, low tech as the forest--they'd have roller logs already laid out where they needed the tree to fall, to get it wherever it needed to go.
Maybe it's a pair of highly inexperienced, but very strong and sneaky lumberjacks.
I didn't know that. Learn
PS here are the sneaky lumberjacks!
Yeah, it's... I don't
Oh my goodness me help, they're too cute.
P.S. Linked this in Trouts
Rolling things on logs was
Toya, do you think Trout would sing if La taught her some songs? Might help her with words and vocalizing in general.
If you think about it, the
just an idea don't hurt me pls
I've thought about that too,
As corny as my comment
I totally agree. Speculation

I also like the idea that the humans slowly turned to deer, but wasnt there an event way back when the graveyard was built? There were souls that floated around and players were given the option to "convert" them. the number of converted souls was represented in the amount of christian graves, and the number of unconverted souls is represented by the pagan graves. I dont know if that implies we should take the graveyard as having been built by the gods more recently or if it should be perceived as ancient. I think its interesting though that the players, perhaps without knowing what the end result would be, converted most of the souls because we as humans have a desire to alter things, rather than leave them be.
Anyhow, if that event is taken into consideration, not all of the seemingly ancient human structures... are necessarily old.
Oh yes, and I have also heard the sound of trees falling very rarely in the woods. Once it was so close by that I thought it was an abiogenesis...
XD
