Woden’s Diary
June 4th, 2012
Having spent many months now as a raven, the Fay doesn’t quite remember he is anything but a corvid at this point, just a few faint whispers of what he really is lurking in the back of his mind. Prefers it that way, life is simpler without the press of years bearing down. Found Mato, nervous as ever trying to steal skull masks from sleeping deer. Oh, Woden loved this game! Helped Mato steel a mask then followed him to the crying idol, where there were a few deer laying there, went and squawked at them and distracted them so Mato could do his thing washing the skull. Met an Ephire Raven. He was a bit bigger then Woden Raven, didn’t like this so did some forest magic to make himself bigger, backfired. Became a gigantic raptor raven. Scared poor Riptail. Felt bad about it. Ah well, went on the prowl for some more skull masks. Flew around in the birch. Found a little baby mini fawn (Lane), thought to take her skull, but she thought he was there to cuddle her. Contemplated just picking her up and carrying her off. Thought better of it, went in search of more skulls. Found Mato at the ruins again, saw Ephire raven, showed off how big he was now. Went back to being a normal sized Raven. Spied Illrose sitting on the ruins, flew over and boldly ripped her skull mask off and tried to fly off with it. This made the doe mad for some reason and she chased him, trying to stomp on him! In a rare show of bravery, Mato tried to protect him. It was short lived though as he ran off again pretty quickly, but Woden did okay squawking at Illrose and “scaring” her off again. Spotted Cutlass, not wanting to wait for him to fall asleep, ran up and ripped his skull mask off too. Success! Two skulls! Tried to take Umay’s too but she thought he was playing with her and the raven was unable to get a grip on her mask with her running all about so gave up. Dragged his two skulls, back to Mato , so proud of his victories. Mato buried them. What a fun game!

September 22nd, 2011
Met a Ravely crow, pleased to have found another corvid friend to play with, the two birds flew off to find mischief. They came upon Mato, Woden gleefully introducing his new crow friend to the odd fellow who was sure to be a source of amusement. Not to be disappointed, the creature led them on another search for sleeping deer with skull masks to steal. Helped him steal the mask from a brown deer by the pond, then watched him wash it at the crying idol and bury it in a grave at the ruins. Made an attempt at stealing Leviathann’s skull while she slept, but Henna awoke, scaring Mato right off. Woden, not so easily perturbed, continued to try and snatch the skull, until Henna’s disapproving scowl, made him slink off at last. Moved onto the next victim, and helped Mato steal Faye’s skull mask, burying it also. Mato appeared exuberant and joyful after this, making Woden very pleased for the odd creature. He thought it was great fun too.

September 21st, 2011
Visiting the forest in Raven form, Woden met up with the little jackdaw, Migisi, remembering her from the fun they’d had pestering the big icy stag. Always up for mischief, the Fay found her following around a very bizarre creature with arm like appendages named Mato. Greeted the little crow, blissfully unaware that she was anything but happy to see him. Mato turned out to be a very skittish fellow, perplexing Woden when he ran away in fear from the little birds. Eventually he seemed to accept their company but the silly lout still bumped into him a few times in his frantic attempts to flee from any deer that approached. Followed the strange creature around with Migisi. Watched him unsuccessfully try and steal the skull masks from sleeping deer. What fun! Woden liked this game so helped Mato in the task, then followed the creature as he ran off with a skull to the crying idol and proceeded to wash it. Followed Mato to the ruins where Woden and Migisi helped him bury the skull in a grave. Even better! Indeed a fun game. Woden was pleased with the accomplishment. After Mato left Woden tried to follow Migs but quickly lost sight of her. Forgetting what he had been doing in the first place, the Fay went to sit in a sunbeam. Rested there a while when a large skull faced kirin pelted deer ran up and started trying to stomp on him. Aggravated the Fay, leapt out of the way and threw a pelt spell at the deer, causing it to run off again.

September 11th, 2011
Very pleased to see Cybelle in forest again, jumped and played with the little doe, finding himself being drawn more often in forest to seek out her company. Transformed into a Raven and played with a small murder of 3, getting himself drawn into crow behavior, going off with them to taunt at and tease a great cold stag that aloofly tried to ignore them. Thinking it all in good fun until the great white antlered doe that was with the icy stag, gave raven Woden a good stomping. Injured, he flapped away back to Cybelle, finally gaining enough wits about him to transform back his stag form, thus healing his injuries. Stayed resting with the little doe the rest of the evening.

September 8th, 2011
Played in the forest, met Cybelle, sat with the tiny doe as a raven. Revealed his large deer form, transitioning quickly between the two forms in good spirits. Met Ebolah, a tiny mini fawn and become distressed when it was afraid of his deer form. Tried to win it over and eventually succeeded. Played with it and Cybelle.

August 12, 2011
Returned to the forest from Fairy when he sensed the dark magic from his young acolyte. Found the little black doe passed out in the birch, knowing full well the current misery she must be in from her elicit dabbling. Awoke her. Didn’t need to remind her of the dangers of black magic or any heavy magic use, even white. “You are ill prepared for such things. And it could destroy you.” Torn now whether to educate her further as guidance would be better than letting her flail with blind attempts that could hurt herself or others. “What to do with you Herla?”

May 18, 2011
Just returned from an extended stay in Fairy. Don’t know how long I was gone…time passes differently there. ((Running around the forest as a mini, wearing the candles in celebration of the rain.))

May 7, 2010
Defeated a pack of Rock Hounds defending Nekumbra, now gravely injured. Forgotten how to heal and too weak to remember.
Later that evening...
With the help of Natheniel, the poison was pushed back so I could transform...thus healing my wounds. I took the form of The Raven. ((and not just any raven, a @#$%ing GIANT Raven.))

May 01, 2011
Having strange dreams that leave me tired in the morning like I haven’t slept at all.

Met a little Bluebird today. He played in a hyacinth patch with Liam and I.

April 30, 2011
I have promised my protection to the spider-doe Nekumbra if the dragon should attack her for keeping her faith and refusing to attack fawns. If she should succumb to her baser instincts again however and destroy a fawn, then I shall help her find peace. I will not allow to her suffer an existence where she is forced to cannibalize one’s own kind, it is no life that would be welcomed, and a kindness it would be to end it for her.
April 28, 2011
Very aggrieved that Nekumbra killed 3 fawns today. I should have done more to help keep her from this awful travesty. How can one change someone’s very nature though? Leviathann has been teaching Nekumbra to hunt the small creatures of the forest as an alternative to eating fawns. This grieves me but it grieves me less then death of the fawnlings, and maybe if I’d brought this up sooner, the death of the fawns could have been avoided.

I’ve been remembering more things. Plant lore, and forest magic that I did not know, I knew. Trying so hard to remember more so I can help. But it hurts. The knowledge has its price and my head aches. Some things I remember make me feel panicked and afraid and I want to hide away…and forget again.

I have put aside the mini spell for now to be big. Big voice and big antlers. I feel I will need them…

April 26, 2011
Spending time with the unfortunate spider doe, Nekumbra. Her plight saddens me. I helped her find grubs by breaking open rotting bark on fallen trees. I hope it can be enough for her. I shall keep a watchful eye though so that she won’t be tempted to eat any of the forest’s fawns. I have a vague memory…I am to protect the forest? But I forget such things so quickly. Best not to dwell on things I can’t recall. It just makes my head ache.

In other news I am quite pleased with being mini. Easier to squeeze into tight spots. And I love my tiny voice! I shall run all over the forest calling out so all can hear it! I think everybody else thinks it’s pretty clever too. Why just yesterday I chased a mini peacock antlered deer all through the forest calling and calling. What fun.

Liam is a fun new friend. He gets sad a scared sometimes and I don’t know why. I shall stand buy him and make sure he knows I am there. I may be mini but I can be large if I need to be. And my antlers can protect all of the forest. Which I am supposed to do. Protect it. I think. I can’t remember.

Woden is undoubtedly very old as he is Fay, but his memories from previous incarnations are poor. He is a strange juxtaposition of extreme age and boisterous youth, owing mainly to his poor memory. He is immortal. A forest spirit. His lack of memory retention is partly his own fault and is a self defense mechanism against the machinations of age. Remembering hurts. Too many years, too many changes. So he ignores them. He is happy in his endless, virtually unchanging forest. It suits him. The trees are his old friends, the rocks venerated ancestors, the earth great mother of all. He will play and romp with fawns and other deer, and gets great joy from their company and liveliness, but he also has a strange sense of detachment to all things around him. He knows these things are ephemeral, they will change, move on, and he…he will forget. He just can’t take anything too seriously.
Though almost always upbeat and happy, Woden has brief interludes of full memory. These are hard times for him. As he is forced too mourn all that has gone and all that has changed. He will hide himself away and force it all away again. So he can walk his forest in happiness again.

Feel free to interact with Woden here.
I am new to roleplaying overall but I would love more chances to develop my character and spend time with yours. There are many deer that I meet in the forest but cannot find them here or a bio, but if I can find them, I'll say hi on their bio pages. If you find Woden in the forest and would like to say hi here as well it is greatly welcomed. I love learning about new deer.

The spider doe listened

The spider doe listened intently. Her stomach was churning terribly. She didn't wait for Woden's approval, she wanted...she needed a cure immediately. Nekumbra approached the old stag that had chased her earlier, and cautiously, she bent down and ate the flowers he dropped.

What a horrifying experience for her. She grimaced with each chew, the taste was disgusting (though not as bad as the stomach acid aftertaste she had in her mouth already). But she chewed and swallowed the flower.

Shuddering, the spider doe wearily collapsed, drifting off to sleep.

Woden watched the old stag drop a flower at his feet. Yes, yes! That was indeed the flower! He thanked the stag profusely with many head nods and bows. Nekumbra ate the flower up and it seemed to help her. He blew out a sigh of relief and sat back down next to his friend.

The old stag was surprised to see the spider-doe immediately approach him and devour the flowers. He took a couple of steps back out of caution, and he watched her curiously as her face twisted in disgust from the bitter taste. Interesting how she could not stand vegetation, but preferred the flesh of the little ones instead.

Forcing the thought from his mind, Ishibaba spoke up softly, "Indeed, any medicinal herb is going to be unbearable in taste. However, the effects are quick, and..." He did not even finish his sentence before Nekumbra collapsed in a shivering heap, and he blinked and turned to the small stag that stood beside her.

"Hum...I did not think that the effects were necessarily that quick. And, you are welcome." He flicked an ear and, with a grunt, lowered himself onto the soft ear, his fur rippling slightly in response to the butterflies that landed there.

She still felt woozy, but at least the vomiting stopped. She lowered her head wearily, still shivering.

She then rises, and turning to them, bows to each of them individually. "Thank you for the lovely time. I will retire for the rest of the day, my den is quite comfortable and I will get a good rest there. Good afternoon, sweeties.", she spoke, then running off.

Ishibaba's eyes snapped open

Ishibaba's eyes snapped open when Nekumbra suddenly spoke; he usually slept while sitting up out of habit. At her thanks, he gave a wordless nod, watching her closely. He frowned as she mentioned the 'little darlings', and the fur on the back of his neck bristled. How could she call them such as she feasted on them? It was unfathomable. He grunted softly, his grey eyes meeting hers as she shivered.

Reluctantly, he rose to his feet and gave a half-bow in return. He may not fully trust Nekumbra, but he was not one to refuse to return the favor of common courtesy. He did help her, after all. "You are welcome," he replied, watching her run off into the distance.

He sighed to himself as he settled back onto the ground, his ears flicking to the sounds of chittering squirrels in the tree beside him. What am I doing? I should not be acting so courteous toward this...this creature. Gods, what are you trying to tell me?

Woden bid Nekumbra a restful

Woden bid Nekumbra a restful sleep, then watched the spider-doe as she went. He felt he had made some headway getting her to eat the grubs instead of fawns. He knew it would not be as simple as that, this matter was far more complex then that. He felt he needed to keep an eye on her, make sure she didn’t indulge in any of the forest’s fawns. Shapeshifting was an easy thing for him, he backed behind the large old oak and turned into a crow. Launching into the air to follow the spider doe to her den, he would keep watch, leading any fawns that came near away from her if he could, or distract Nekumbra from their presence.

If he could remember that is. It was all too possible he would fall asleep. Forget. Get distracted.

He’d forgotten how fun it was to be a crow. Flying. The wind caressing through his wings. What’s that shiny thing there? He would just go have a peek. But there was something he was supposed to be doing, right? What was it again? Something important? Oh, how good these wings and feathers felt…

Much...much later.

Woden: "Tired of being crow. I'll be Woden again. Big Woden. Nice big antlers. Big huge voice. Yes. Good." *plays with Liam by the pond*

She tried her very best to

She tried her very best to eat the grubs. They made her sick at first, and she ran over to throw up again at a nearby tree. It was when all of those around her came and encouraged her was that she tried again.

The grubs were manageable this time. She ate a few, and although the taste was sickening this time, she would rather have the food in her than none at all. It kept her away from the fawns.

They were so tempting, though. Every time one would run by, she eyed them. She fought the instinct to chase them.

Satisfied, she sat down for the moment. She had met a lot of new deer today, but she felt some kind of attachment to Woden. If it wasn't for him, she'd still be eating the young deer in the Forest.

She didn't know how long it would last, though, before her cravings got the best of her.
Sighthoundlady's picture

Woden was pleased the spider

Woden was pleased the spider doe had tried to eat the grubs again. He wore his largest antlers and biggest form that day as he thought he may need to protect her. Happily, others seemed to be behind the efforts to help the spider doe as well. Still, if he could remember, he’d wear the large antlers for a while more just in case.

Seeing the queasy looks Nekumra got when she ate the grubs, he went to find some of the blue flowers that helped her nausea before. Plucking some up, he ran back and placed them in front of Nekumbra. “If you chew on these while ruminating…they can help prevent you from getting sick again. I only wish I could help you with your other cravings. I am trying very hard to remember things. Maybe something I can remember will help you.”

((I just realized that I haven't done any text-based RPing with Liam yet...! D: Nekumbra's story is so interesting, I was hoping that Liam could be involved in his own way. He is already feeling an attachment to her, and is upset about Flammel scaring her. :< He still does not know what she truly is, however; he's pretty naive for an adult. All in due time, I suppose. c: ))

Liam grimaced as Nekumbra vomited and then went right back to munching on grubs. This was his first time ever meeting the strange doe, and he could not help but feel confused as to what was going on. Woden had mentioned her before, saying that she was a little...well, different. He did not explain much more than that, however, leaving Liam to ponder as to what he meant. Did he mean her diet? Yes, that was certainly odd, but he had eaten a few grubs before. Granted, it wasn't pleasant at all, so why was she eating them so voraciously?

"Miss Nekumbra...if I may suggest, perhaps some bark will help settle your stomach? I...I have eaten bark when ill before, and it seemed to help," he offered in his soft, shy voice as he sat beside her. When Woden brought over some blue flowers, however, Liam absently said out loud, "Oh...yes, those flowers are wonderful. Bitter, but effective. An old fellow taught me about them once, but I seem to have forgotten." He smiled sheepishly, a slight embarrassed blush upon his cheeks.
quadraptor's picture

"I...suppose I could try the bark sometime. But that seems so odd to eat. I think I just had too many grubs yesterday, darling. If I only eat a little along with these flowers of Woden's (though they leave a terrible taste in my mouth), I will be okay.

My stomach does not seem to like all of this, though...but it's going to have to do. Thank you, sweetie."
Uruushou's picture

Liam nodded his head in

Liam nodded his head in understanding, and although he was still puzzled as to why she was eating grubs in the first place he decided it was best to not push for information. After all, he had just met her, and he didn't want her to to get a wrong impression of him. He offered a small, comforting chuckle. "Yes, it can be rather odd to eat. It is rough and chewy, but as tasteless as it may be it is a delicacy to everyone in the winter. And, I believe that there are grubs that live in bark as well," he said with a smile, and then bowed his head at the thanks.

"Of course... If there is anything you need, please let me and Woden know. And...if that buck is causing you trouble..." His voice trailed off as he gazed over her shoulder to see the monarch-masked stag still laying by a tree nearby, watching them closely.
Sighthoundlady's picture

Woden nodded at the

Woden nodded at the suggestion made by Liam about the bark helping with an upset stomach, “Yes, the bark of the red elm specifically can greatly help with stomach ills. Willow bark helps with pain. The Hoodia plant is also good for upset stomach and also can suppress hunger pains…” Woden blinked, where did all that just come from? It just spewed out. “Hoodia plant is rare though. Very difficult to find.” He continued, still surprised he was remembering all this. He clung hard to the knowledge, trying to concentrate on making it stay put. “I will see if I can find some though. I used to chew the plant when I had to go on long journeys and would not be able to eat.”

Long journeys? To where? Woden could only ever remember the forest.

quadraptor's picture

Nekumbra looked over toward

Nekumbra looked over toward Flammel, and immediately spoke to Liam, "No no, dear, I do not want to cause any more trouble from him. Please don't worry about that."

But she wasn't fully speaking the truth. She was still very terrified of the stag, and knew that even with the slightest bit of danger, he would most likely be after her. She didn't want that, not now.
Uruushou's picture

At all of this new

At all of this new information, Liam blinked in surprise as well and looked up at Woden curiously. The Hoodia plant... Why did that sound so familiar? Certainly, he had heard the term before, perhaps from that same grey stag he had mentioned earlier. Oh, if only he had not been so drowsy from the sun's rays and had paid attention...

The mention of long journeys went over Liam's head, however. After all, many deer have made pilgrimages in their lifetimes. Red elms... He knew where those were, certainly. He used to sleep beneath them when he was a fawn.

"I will stay with Nekumbra if you'd like. I do not think she is safe being alone with that stag around," Liam pointed out, glancing again toward the buck in the distance. "But in the event this Hoodia plant cannot be found, I know of the red elms that you speak, and can certainly bring back some bark if need be."

Nekumbra's words made him frown a little, but he gave a single nod in understanding. So his name was Flammel... Why was he causing her so much terror? The fur on his nape bristled just thinking about it.
Sighthoundlady's picture

Woden found Nekumbra in the

Woden found Nekumbra in the forest, he was concerned how distressed she seemed, “What is the matter spider-doe?” he asked her. And then she told him. She had killed 3 fawns that day. Woden was shocked and aggrieved, he backed away from Nekumbra, shaking his head, tears welling up in his eyes. He fell to one leg and staggered. No, no, no, this was terrible. What could he do? What could he do? He thought again about finding the hoodia plant to suppress cravings, but this was more than just a craving Nekumbra was battling. It was her very nature. Could one ask lion to give up eating its prey? What then was the alternative for dealing with a lion when it threatened your home? Woden did not like to where this logic was leading him. He had been remembering much and he remembered that he was supposed to protect the forest. Was there anything he could do to help Nekumbra and truly change her nature? It would take a magic and a power he didn’t think he had in him and didn’t know how to find it.

He’d been so much happier when he didn’t try to remember, things where so much easier that way. He ran from the sight of Nekumbra, she was pathetically miserable and Woden couldn’t face her, not after what she had done. He had his own emotions warring inside him. He climbed to the top of the highest rock, and bellowed his grief to the twin gods.
quadraptor's picture

Nekumbra had to tell Woden

Nekumbra had to tell Woden what she had done. It was written all over her and impossible to hide. She told him that she ate three fawns today...

And when he ran off, she cried, "Woden, please! Let me...", but he was already long gone.

"...explain..."

After a moment, she convinced Liam to follow her. Finding Woden at the Playground, she called to him, but he wouldn't answer. She lowered her head sadly, crying deep tears, and sitting, she watched him, hoping he would come over.

She had to explain herself...

Woden wakes up in a fairy circle with the spider doe Nekumbra sleeping next to him. Her dreams seem to be troubled so he rises up sits closer to her, his shoulder leaned against hers. He was impressed by her desire to change and had witnessed first hand her trying out new hunting methods so she could sate her hunger with the small animals of the forest instead of the fawnlings. “If you stay on this path and spare the forest’s fawns, I will support and defend you against the repercussions from those you fear. I am remembering more of my old magic and I can be a strong protector. Stay on course and I will be here. I won’t forget my ties in this as I have so many other things in the past.” And here, he gave her an affectionate nuzzle, “And if you should waver…and kill again those I am sworn to protect…I will be here to help stop you…even if that means escorting you un into death.” He said this in kindness…for such an existence forced to cannibalize one’s own kind, was no life that would be welcomed, and a kindness it would be to end it for her.

Woden blanched and let out a groan. “That’s…great,” he said, voice wavering, “I’m glad it’s going well for you. To each his own, they say.” He tucked his legs in closer to himself.

He let a comfortable silence build around them, relaxing. He even started to dose a bit, the sunlight filtering through the forest canopy above, warm on his back. His mind wandered. “Strange dreams lately, these nights. Something’s…stirring in the forest,” he said and then blinked, surprised more at his words, that seemed to be happening more to him all the time

Nek began to feel more

Nek began to feel more comfortable as well from the awkward silence. "Mhmm...I always forget my dreams...what are yours like, if I may ask?", she asked curiously.

Woden fidgeted a little, his ears flicking, strange uncomfortable feeling growing in him when he dwelled on the memories of his dreams. “There is an owl," he recalled, " And a dark path through the forest. And my heart beats so fast.” He cocked his head, “I think I’ve been having this dream every night. Maybe for a while now.” He shrugged his big shoulders and shook his antlers. “It makes me feel very strange.”

"I feel that I am to go somewhere. I've wandered the forest, but there is no place new to go. So I guess it is just a dream."

"Hmm...well, I don't know much about interpreting dreams, but that seems very interesting to say the least. Maybe there is someone around here who could tell you what all that means...", she spoke, curious as well.

She let out a yawn, and then said, "Spent one day worrying about being eaten...I hope tomorrow will be better...I hope one day I will not have to worry abut anything anymore...but that day will never come."

Woden nodded, “Yes, I need a dream interpreter. I’m tempted to take some lavender blooms to help with my sleeping. I’m so tired, I feel like I haven’t been sleeping at all, and when I’m awake, I feel like I’m still sleeping. These dreams…,” he shook his head again.

He looked at Nekumbra with concern, the last few days had been riddled with strife for her. He did not fully understand how a dragon was to come to the forest but she seemed convinced it was going to happen. He’d pledged his help to her. “I’m sorry, I know things have been harsh for you…we should do something fun. Liam would like to do something as well, I’m sure. We could have an adventure!” Woden’s typical mischievous nature was creeping through again.

Nekumbra smiled politely, "That would be lovely. I would love an adventure.", she spoke, glad to get her mind off of the threat toward her in the following days.
