When he taunted at you guys when you invited him over, it was out of insecurity; oddly will he act submissive, he responds with bluffing and aggression, but won't advance on them. He dropped that act quickly though and tucked his tail between his legs like a good dog for a while there at the pond, but.. from then on he was feeling uneasy and wanted to follow at a distance.
He's afraid of losing these guys as a result of his own impulsiveness. He cares for them dearly, and that truly frightens him. It's do easy to forget what he is with how dorky and happy he can act, but that doesn't change the fact that he's Death. l:
