King and Country

SilverBells's picture
This is where I will be moving all of the information on Atticus' race, instead of having it crowding up his biography. It will be updated constantly as I develop their culture more, so keep watching! (: ♥

BELOW CUT~

The Government

The people have a caste system of sorts: The king, queen and royal family- clergy- nobles- soldiers- city officials- ordinary townspeople- merchants- peasants and servants. They are a very peaceful people, and the society finds the old ways comforting and familiar, and for the most part the culture has remained the same for hundreds of years. Which is also due to the fact that individuals live a very long time. The country went through a series of political reforms after The War to get to the point they are today.

The Social Classes

The king, queen and royal family- clergy- nobles- soldiers- city officials- ordinary townspeople- merchants- peasants and servants. They have social classes yes, but the people are not bound to them. If a servant wishes to leave his masters home and has the money to open a shop he can. If a Noble falls in love with his maid they have every right to be married. It just isn't common. People do tend to stick with their own social level, but it's entirely their choice to do so.

NOBLES- The extended royal family, the rich, and the city officials. Palaces with golden statues, chandeliers, gardens, bright and beautiful. These are the homes of the nobles. They are extravagant and are often alive with parties and banquets.
Exterior

MIDDLE CLASS- Ordinary townspeople such as bakers, shopkeepers, blacksmiths etc, soldiers,

MERCHANTS- They have their own sort of class simply because they are very nomadic and seldom have a permanent home. Some travel in caravans and others alone.

PEASANTS- The farmers, people who work in public stables, and various other low paying jobs.

SERVANTS- People who work for Nobles doing things such as cleaning, caring for the children, cooking, and whatever else their 'master' may need. They are not owned, and may leave the home they serve if they wish.

The War

It's like the American Civil War and WWI if we were to compare it as far as weapons, uniforms and the like. Cavalry horses were used, canons, swords and early rifles. This is simply what the people call the revolution that lasted four years to restore the rightful king to the throne. They have never been a violent people and there are very few wars in their history. After the war, when the true king was restored to his position, the country began to rebuild and settle back into a normal life. (I'll write a better paragraph explaining later lol.)

Etiquette and Affection

One of my favorite sections! lol A lot of this is based on the behavior of rabbits, remember, the people are very lapine-like. ^^

-People here are cordial and polite, a sure way to make a bad impression is to be rude. Isn't it anywhere? xD They are a very warm also. Hugging, gasping hands, and something similar to the French "la bise" are used for greeting one another. If meeting someone for the first time, you grasp the other person's hands with both of yours, you do not shake, simply grip. And remember both hands, not just one. (Example) They might chuckle or think it's odd if you do forget, or don't know any better, but they will most likely not correct you. So try to remember! You would do this for either gender.

-Though if you know the person well, you use the "la bise" which is two kisses on either side of the cheek. You would use this among family, and good friends. Males and females, females and females, but with two males it is less common. Not to say they don't do it, but hugs are more common. (As I said, very affectionate people.)

-If the person you meet is someone like a teacher, noble, or elder, anyone you should give respect to, you may bow slightly, before gripping hands.

-Now, for two in love, here are ways to show affection:
  • -Rubbing noses
  • -Sitting very close together with hips or shoulders touching. The smaller or often the female is the one who leans up against the larger, or male, and the more dominant among the two will in turn embrace the other.
  • -Smoothing their ears. They find this very soothing. Often this is used if someone is in distress and you're trying to calm them down, or comfort them.
  • -Massaging necks, it's on the lines of rubbing their ears.
  • -Holding hands
  • -If you're not so subbtle, or if you're flirty, playfully grabbing the other's tail is a way to get noticed. ^^

    Lighting

Light is very important to the people. Candles are are used mostyly, and are carved with delicate patterns. There are black polished lamps in the streets, glass oil lamps in the shops, and in their homes. There are people who's only job is to light the lamps at dusk, and snuff them out at dawn. Beautifully crafted chandeliers, and sained glass lamps are the centerpeices of tables and dining rooms. photo

    Transportation

The traditional method is by sleighs and carts. They have no horses, deer are the primary work animals. They have been developed into many different breeds based on what the need is. Heavier with large shoulders for hauling and pulling, lighter for simple riding etc.
    Example of large breeds
    Example of middle sizes breeds
    Example of light breeds.
-Now, steam engines are also being used.
-Most people own a bicycle. Example

    Music

Musical instruments vary from place to place, but below they are listed from the common to less ordinary...
    • -Accordians
    • -Harmonicas
    • -Fiddles/Violins
    • -Tamborines
    • -Bagpipes -(military use mainly)
    • -Drums

      Dance

A unique blend of Celtic (Scottish Irish) and Ukrainian, Russian folk. Styles and music vary slightly from region to region. Dance is very traditional, but lively and often humorous. There is a lot of leaping and spinning involved, and often the men and women begin opposite one another, the man may throw up and arm, the lady courtesy, and then the floor explodes into music. Special costumes are worn, very festive and elaborate. Sometimes the dance tells a story: romance, comedy, tragedy, rarely war seeing how they are very peaceful. But story oriented dances are typically only performed in plays, or for rehearsed entertainment. Weddings especially are occasions with lots of dancing. For the majority, it's all for fun.
      - Video - Wedding music, this would be sung as a comedy about the man no longer being a bachelor. A similar song is done for the wife. xD

      Entertainment

Circuses, fairs, and festivals are popular form of entertainment. Theatres are enjoyed by the wealthy, while peasants cluster around mimes, clowns, and various other street performers.

      The People

My character Atticus may seem very extraordinary, but other than his unusual size, he's a very typical example of his race. The people tend to have the following characteristics...
      • ~Fair complexion
      • ~Freckles are very common
      • ~Fair hair, mostly blonde, lighter shades of red and brunette.
      • ~Black hair is very rare. Therefore... I stick out. A lot.
      • ~Many people have curly hair, straight is unusual
      • ~Inuit and Native American features.
      • ~Average normal body temperature is around 120°F.
      • ~Tail that curls back like a Spitz dog.
      • ~The tail goes with their hair color. Ex- Curly blondes have blonde curly fur on tail.
      • ~Rabbit ears.
      • ~Retractable dull claws on hands. The pads can be any natural color. (Brown grey pink etc.)
      • ~Feet do not have claws
      • ~They do not have anthro legs. They have normal human leg shape, they just have critter toes. lol
      • ~Pads and are more noticeable on hands than feet.
      • ~The males have facial hair, not animal whiskers.
      • ~Many men do not have hair on their chest or back, much like American Indians.
      • ~But men are typically (lol) hairier than woman, some have extra hair on their elbows. Example

      Fashion

      (men)
      • ~Look your best! A gentleman's gentleman.
      • ~Vests, button down mainly but pull-overs also. Pull-overs are favored in sweaters.
      • ~Sweaters, button down or pull-over. Example
      • ~Shirts are pressed and crisp, often rolled up to the elbows.
      • ~Cravats are worn instead of bowties or ties. Example
      • ~Pocket watches instead of wristwatches
      • ~Patterns add an ornate touch to borders of sleeves and necklines. Example
      • ~Rococo fashion is popular among nobles, fancy waistcoats and the like- Example
      • ~Long or short hair is accepted. Can be worn slicked back or scruffy. There are NO buzz cuts, mohawks, spikiness, or any such absurdness. Example
      • ~Breeches, Plus Fours, Knickerbockers are all very popular for casual dress.
      • ~Bright colors are favored with merchants. This man in the example is wearing a kaftan. Example
      • ~No zippers on clothes, everything is buttons and clasps. Example
      • ~Braids are common in both genders. Example
      • ~Knee socks are worn with the breeches and such. When wearing long pants socks are often held up with garters. Example
      (women)
      • ~Dresses are a main staple. They are neither very long or very short. They typically reach about mid-calf on the leg and no higher than four inches above the knee.
      • ~Hair is worn in a variety of braids, down or up. Women seldom have short hair.
      • ~Women don't usually wear hats, if they do it's only for when working in the wheat fields. But they often wear beaded headdresses.
      • ~A very lavish headdress. This would be worn by a member of the Royal family. Example
      • ~A simple headdress. (The kind you and I would probably wear lol) Example
      • ~Patterns add an ornate touch to borders of sleeves and necklines. Example
      • ~Lace and floral patterns. Example
      • ~Gunne Sax and Prarie styles. Example
      • ~Bishop sleeves, Balloon sleeves, and Leg-O-Mutton sleeves are common. Sleeves are never "see through".
      • ~Sometimes the collars on dresses are long and lacey.
      • ~While cycling women wear bloomers.
      • ~Bathingsuits are very modest, early 1900's style. Example

        THE SEASONS
        - Winter- The land is unique in this season in that the trees do not lose their leaves, the leaves simply loose all pigment and turn white, becoming very brittle. The trees go into a dormant stage.

        - Spring- The season where the skeletal leaves finaly drop off and are imediatly replaced by new ones, so there is really no time of the year when the trees are bare.

        CLOSING NOTE

This is still a work in progress. I'm a history junkie and there are so many possibilities going through my head right now. x'D I'm basically just throwing everything I like together into a world and having fun with it. xD I've been going through massive encyclopedias on historical fashion and such and I'm still developing this world. It's not 100% accurate and fool-proof, as I'm just doing it for fun. I see plenty of flaws. Things that just don't quite fit together. I've got a lot of things heaped together that are historically... Iffy. xD A lot of my information about the clothes is also very general and just... meh. I'll refine all that, and later talk about the fashion according to each social level, male and female. And I still haven't come up with a name for their country, kingdom, world or whatever I end up calling it. lol I apologize if this is messy. ;n; In time it SHALL be organized! And I'm trying to do my homework as far as the history goes. Me jumping around and grabbing stuff from the middle ages, throwing in the 1700's-1800's and sprinkling in the 1920's is NOT helping to make this easy though. xD rofl Bear with me!

And if you see anything misspelled please tell me. I'm a horrible speller. And also just random mistakes or anything. x)

PS- I'm not going to be mad if you comment with "TRACK" but I would rather you didn't. I don't like those. ): I would rather get a heart or a smiley than a "LOLTRACK". x'D

Panda- Awwww thank you~ ♥ I always said I wasn't going to publish anything, there's a huge backstory to all of this still developing. This is just the description of my race... It's tempting! xD And I've had people ask me before if they could make fan characters... Maybe later on. I'm still figuring them out and I haven't come to a good standard yet. (:

Ryff- Ohhhhh teh LUFFS! :'D

Mini- Thanks. (:

Okami- hahaha Yesss you must read this massive information dump! xD ♥

PandaXiongMao- Gaaaaaaaaah PERHAPS! :'D I always wait a while, compile more stuff, then edit and change the story some more. It's constantly changing. But what encouranges me is that I've only had Atticus for about 8 months and already I've got a good idea of their culture and people. And it would be amazing to have a movie made of my story... To see my characters come alive. @3@ heeheehee But I dunno. Right now they're still just my little rabbit folk running around in my sketches. The trouble is I'm a better artist than writer. By far. ;n;
