Kennis is afraid of most predators, though she respects them and knows they’re vital for the world to stay as is. She would be afraid of humans had she not been raised with/as them, though the fear is a phenomenon that has been seen in the few Leathharts that were abandoned early in life.

“Not looking forward to the Winter Solstice”

Leathharts

Leathharts, or half-stags, are the children of Cernunnos and a human woman. They are conceived on the night of The Hunt, a night when the men of the village go to hunt the White Stag. During this night, to ensure their success, a woman is offered to Cernunnos, and a Leathhart is created.

Leathharts are a species currently numbering only forty-five, making up 15% or so of Kilfreagh’s population. They are unique to Kilfreagh, coming about due to the village’s offering to Cernunnos. One is born each year, they all share the conception date of the Winter Solstice, which the celebrate together. This is in part to make up for the fact that they are not allowed to take part in the ritual that occurs.

Leatharts have the ability to shift into any form of deer present in the New Forest, though they all have their favourite. Their deer form is born again as a newborn fawn in the spring, and then ages a little over two years per month, dying on the night of the winter solstice. They then must spend the winter as human, as they can no longer shift into deer form until they are born again spring.

Due to this unnatural life-cycle, the females are infertile, even in human form. The males can breed in stag form, but cannot in human form. Leathharts do not live very long, only into their forties or fifties.

Leathharts are considered by some to be guardians of the forest, whilst others consider them an unwanted but necessary by-product of keeping Cernunnos happy, as Cernunnos himself does. Yet the village Tréadmáthair (Flock mother) considers them to be vital to keep the surrounding nature at peace with the village’s livestock.

They have a fully working appendix, and so can digest a far greater number of plants than humans.
