Ribcage.

Sonata's picture
So many of them, gone.

The Surgeon glanced up at the hearts that still beat within his tines, his own heart only just beginning to slow down once more, the green flesh pulsing and pumping like the wings of a trapped hummingbird.

He went back to ignoring the lost hearts, looking instead at the doe to his side.

"My bones hurt?"

Asleep, resting off her wounds no doubt.

He paused, then rose to his hooves to lay near her, curling around her, blood from his own fur rubbing off upon her where he touched.

His body bled now, almost as much as the organs upon his antlers.
Those wounds were slowly healing, they would scar, and be hidden under layers of crusted over blood.

He watched the other deer from a distance, rising when anything moved with a low tired rasp of; "Don't touch. My ribcage"

before settling down again.

He turned his head down once more, shaking his head slightly, exhaustion, mental and physical coursing through him.

From habit, he stayed awake, in the past, he had carefully made sure his heart could not be stolen in his sleep.

After a moment he eased his head down, pausing it before resting it atop the doe's shoulders.

No fear for his heart now.

For his Ribcage guarded it well.

Why?

He would never know.

Scent?

She said she likes his scent.

He inhaled softly.

All he could smell, was decay and blood.

His ears fanned down, wondering what she had seen in him.

She could play with the others, if she chose.

And yet she had chosen to guard him, even when he had backed away from her, when he had shown only disdain.

She had a strange heart...

He closed hi eyes, listening for hers.

She said it had ceased to beat long ago.

He wouldn't know.

In his exhaustion he could hear only the hearts on his tines as they sang in an uneven way.

He watched the blood of his hearts stream down her fur, the bright blood running over her to the ground, by the time he awoke again, he knew from experience, there would certainly be a puddle.

The hearts on his tines slowed, a soft thrumming lullaby.

He would never understand her heart...
