Origin story:

The soil was choking, like soaking wet, black silk. Each push from the earth below slid the doe toward the surface, legs and head forward like a fawn in her Mother's womb. The very soil of the forest was propelling her toward the shade of unageable trees and warm air, far away from the molten core of the planet. As the doe cooled, she formed like lava flowing into the sea. Her form was pulled lithe, legs stretched long, muzzle pressed thin. And, as she cooled, her fur took on the same ash gray to cooling molten rock.

The sun scorched the doe's nose as she cracked through the surface like a sprout forcing its way from the ground. Dapples of sunlight burned white scars into her virgin shoulders, varying degrees of color splotched her new-formed fur upon the celestial body's first touch. Her first breath was an agonized scream.

There upon the ground she lay smoldering, breathing until the smoke in her lungs was replaced by fresh air. Her new form quivered like an earthquake, shifting inside to adjust to the world. After a time, the shivering stopped. One last puff of smoke curled up from the end of the doe's tongue, which resembled a lump of coal in her mouth. The smoke rose to form a symbol above her head, before vanishing.

Carefully, the doe opened her eyes on the world. Two massive pearls scanned the landscape from beneath long lashes, their pupils dilating and darting back and forth to search for anything that might do her harm. Only then did she dare lift her head above the bright red flowers that swayed above it. Poppies obstructed her vision, forcing her to stand.

The forest itself had given birth to a new inhabitant.
