  • An Origin Story.
    Shivering.

The first sensation the babe felt was the vibrations of her own cold body, mistaken as not being her own bu that of the entire world. Quickly, though, the feeling stopped. A warm tongue slipped over her grime-soaked fur. The feeling of comfort washed over the babe as if it was the only thing to exist. Every moment seemed that way, the only one to exist. Feelings were so prominent behind the dark eyes of the newborn that they alone were exhausting. Tiredness overwhelmed the baby. Massaged by her mother's tongue, the small one slept.

Two Deer-Faced Nameless had just given birth to a tiny new fawn. This was not their first child, nor would it be their last one. Unlike any true parents, though, these deer would only stay with their babe until the Gods gave her a pictogram to symbolize their protection over her. Once the little glow over her head contained a name, it was custom for the pair of nameless parents to leave their child to fend for herself.

The antlered mother and father rose away from the child, as if ascending into the sky. Their child would always think that was what happened, but would neglect to remember the looks of jealousy that flickered behind four eyes. The pair of Nameless would continue to bear children for the rest of their lives, in hopes that one day they too would bring to life pictograms of their own. The child's mother and father would fade from view into the darkness of another moonless midnight in young Diana's mind. For now, the baby was completely alone. She had the Gods to thank that at only a few hours old, under their protection, she could fend for herself. Many fawns had such thanks to give.
