"How does following me, making sure nothing 'gets out of hand' qualify as a survival technique?" The Kudu asks desperately, steadily losing her composure as she pleas with this stubborn female. Clearly physically incapable of heeding the does request, Jo's head lowers and she ejects a stream of air noisily from her nostrils before tossing her head in the direction of the departed stag from earlier.
"I will feel responsible for you. Unlikely as it feels now, if one of these days one of these over-muscled slobbering brutes grows tired of pissing circles around me and snaps my neck instead, one of the least-safe places in the forest is going to be that tree or rock a few feet away from me." By now Jo was vaguely aware that the newcomers in the forest brought with them baggage, memories and habits and prejudices formed by whoever they were, in whatever sort of lives they led before. She shuddered to think of the abuse or harm this doe might have suffered and at whose hand that she consistently favored the company of violent individuals over their much less aggressive counterparts. Somehow, though, even with her ears plastered back against her head the red doe heard the theory of the other, and through the sunken black eyes of the skull she meets the other's. It's a testament to Jokerman's disgruntled state that she actually searches there for some similarity at all. Idiot, she chides herself a half second later and steels herself.
"Many who come to this place consider it their second chance at life, their chance to have another go at it. For peace. Mine passed a long time ago. Do you really think yours already passed too?"
Her nostrils flared and her ears had also flattened. She meant to open her mouth, to speak of forming alliances with others - safety in numbers sort of strategy, if you will. But, perhaps, there was even more to it. A sub-conscious motive of reaching out? Not just allies but maybe even a friend. Not that any of this would ever slip into a discussion, hell, Indi was already denying such thoughts. But god only knows, despite this forest thriving and pulsing with life, how desolate it could feel. Maybe the girl felt a small kinship with this other solitary soul.
But what ever sub-conscious flame of hope there was had been extinguished by now. And all she could feel was the heat rising in her cheeks, flushed skin beneath her fur. The way Jokerman spoke to her made her feel like a child, scrambling to find explanations for her actions and failing pretty hard at it. Anything she said could be construed into contradiction..and it was rather exhausting.
"I don't view this place as a second chance for me. Redemption, maybe. But I already have as much peace as I need and I maintain it." she says and shakes her pelt as much as she could from her position. Her eyes shot back toward the red kudu and she heaves an exasperated sigh, one laced with a subtle hint of remorse. "I won't follow you anymore, miss, if that's what you want. I'm not real keen on arguing or being a burden on others, so I'll go my own way from now on and leave you to your devices." Indi tore her gaze away then, casting it some place else, any where else in case the kudu excused herself. She had what she wanted now and there would be no reason for her to linger around..that was what they both wanted now, wasn't it?
If any emotion at all flickered in the Kudu's eyes, it was relief, but it was fated to be short-lived and was soon replaced with worry. Worries for the doe, worries for the future, and the inevitable colliding worries that she had upset this stranger whose intentions were, as Jo knew them to be, completely pure. But alliances, friendships--these sort of things just didn't cross her mind anymore, it just wasn't in the red doe's capacity to consider them now.
Still, she couldn't help feeling, dimly, that she had done something wrong here. The subtle but present changes in the other doe's demeanor sent guilt sinking to the bottom of Jo's stomach. And she was little consoled by the fact that this probably proved she was making the right choice.
"Jokerman," she corrects softly, making no move to get up yet she eyes her current company. JM was glad the other would give up the tailing, there was no disputing this, and she is more relaxed for this although she feels she is now due for, at least, a snappy response from the gold female. "Look, I'm sorry... I just remembered two seconds ago how you're supposed to treat normal deer, and that was sort of off the mark. You didn't deserve that at all... I don't find myself making many introductions these days, as you can probably tell. Can I have your name?"
"Jokerman." She repeated, trying the name out loud for the very first time. She eyed the other doe with skepticism but she would play along, despite the sinking feeling of being disheartened by their former discussion. She knew what all of this was leading up to and soon she'd be sitting by herself like she often did most days. So, she would answer.
"Yes. My name is Indi."
Perhaps the kudu was simply being polite, maybe she didn't want to leave after all that, after she had gotten what she wanted. It would have been rude, Indi knew that but she didn't really take Jo for the type to care either way. She hadn't really shown it before in their brief interactions. So why did she feel this new need to feign a little respect? Indi could hardly believe that, if Jokerman actually felt anything for her at all, that respect would be at the top of her list. If anything, the girl figured Jo saw her as something much like an child - something that needed to be coddled a little after a stern lecture.
"Is..is there anything else?" The question had been earnest, she no longer had the energy nor urge to give any snappy replies. No, the question had been spoken softly and the only urges she felt now were to rest her side against the trunk of the tree and to close her eyes. And she did just that, waiting to hear the crunch of feet against foliage slowly fade and the sound of space fill in the kudu's spot.
There was, the darker deer thinks, but whatever she'd originally come here to say--something about thanks and appreciation and fawn-sitting--was forgotten for the sudden victory, which somehow didn't feel like a victory at all. A sort of apathetic, learned helplessness whispers to JM that this is her cue to get up and leave the doe without further damage being done, before either one of them becomes more than a vague, fleeting thought in the other's mind. She shuts her own eyes, struck by how easily she was fatigued now at the prospect of simple emotions and choices. Jo resents that cold, logical voice. It's needed for the monsters and for the ones she can't hate but also can't stand to be near, but surely she doesn't need it just to function on a day to day basis.
If the golden doe's eyes remained closed, then, and if the stranger allows her, there would be the expected sound of crunching leaves, only they'd get louder and louder until the second doe filled the space at the first's side.
"Can I sit here?" She asks, making sure to keep a respectful distance between them, waiting to see if the other rises and leaves before she settles down next to her. It isn't as if she is fully encroaching upon her space; although less than what Jo herself would have considered acceptable, it's better suited for talking. She eyes the weary looking female for a moment before adding thoughtfully, "You look tired."
Her eyes snapped to attention the moment Jokerman's mouth produced the question. She looked up at her as the doe rose from the ground only to settle down closer - she would have flinched if it had been another time with another deer. But now, she was accustomed to the kudu. She remained silent, only giving a curt nod with a questioning look.
Finally, she spoke when Jo made her observation and then Indi offered a wry smile in return. "Defeated, I think." she said. "But I suppose tired fits in there too. I don't sleep often..and I have a hunch that you could possibly relate." Indi continued to look at her and dipped her head ever so slightly to the side as her eyes tried to read the masked warrior. She could already tell that sleepless nights were a reoccurring thing for her as well.
"If only sleeping with our eyes open could actually work." she added.

aw! yeah, indi admired him for giving it his best and felt rather bad for Noa when he seemed to have lost that round.
glad to see he has more deer around him now though! (:
Aw, thank you! <3333!
And ff its okay, shes just kinda judgmental about males and it takes her a while to warm up to them.
She was just startled really.
"Sorry... about the giant stag looming over you. You all right? You left so fast." The Kudu is surprised to see Indi sitting a little ways off a few hours later, but not too surprised. Mostly just pleased. Rare to find someone with poorer social skills than herself, or something.
Her gaze was cast toward the sound of the voice - the voice which she was beginning to recognize now. Still, it always felt strange to hear the kudu speak. Indi bowed her head ever so slightly and responded, "No, I apologize for fleeing so quickly. I was..surprised, to say the least. Not only that but..old habits die hard, that's what they say anyways." she glanced off somewhere else, as if half expecting to see the stag from earlier but there were no other bodies near them now. "I do hope your friend didn't take my leaving in too much offense." she added, her eyes returning to the masked doe.
Jokerman smiles knowingly but otherwise gives no other acknowledge of the other doe's apology. This was in the context of the last simple introduction she'd tried to conduct between Neil and Henna, which ended in the two nearly coming to blows over... a tree? At least Indi didn't try to bite the stag's head off. "He'll live," she snorted. Neil seemed, ah, thick-skinned. Not to say she wouldn't try to make it up to him later; his unsolicited kindness left her feeling indebted, a sensation she'd become acquainted with through Indi as well. It no longer completed discomfited her, though, either. Her muzzle directed forward, Jo gave the female an interested look. "Well, if your instinct is diffuse a dangerous situation by running away rather than running into it, I can only say you've formed good habits."
It was true, too. In all the time she'd known her, Indi had practiced very good judgement calls. Something the kudu found she could no longer say of herself.
Wasn't sure what was going on there when Prita arrived on the scene but it was apparent those two stags seemed to be making trouble and Indi was trying to pull Prita away!
Nelile - WHOA I DID NOT SEE YOUR POST THERE WOW HI
and thank you for the track! is this your adorable fawn? ; o ;

But yes, I'm glad she was able to meet/interact with another of yours even if it was pretty brief. :c

She finds her where she expects to, seated in the bed of flowers adjacent to the red forest that houses the Kudu's own heart, and nigtmares. "I need your help for something." Jokerman sits opposite of the Topaz doe and for the first time in several weeks, looks her in the eye. She makes no attempt to hide the flagrant desperation or the determination in her own. "You probably won't like it. I don't. But I have to do it and I'd appreciate your help."
Indi looked up as the red warrior approached, making herself comfortable -- if Jo ever truly could be comfortable somewhere.. Her ears flicked forward, catching the dark undertones of her voice once the kudu spoke up. "What is it?" Indi asked, her brows furrowed as she stared at the other. However, It didn't really matter what it was really, Indi already decided she was in the moment Jo said she needed her help.
"They did something recently... that's hurting a family both you and I are fond of. " As soon as she said it, a brief flash of guilt crosses the Kudu's face, a sign of the level of personal responsibility felt in this statement. It had been her fault, at least partially. After all she'd been hurt by Thane before, she knew what lows he was capable of reaching. She lets out a small sigh and then the expression resets itself into a stoic mask, a feeble smile playing at Jokerman's lips. "I don't intend for it to get violent. My intentions don't seem to count for shit though, lately. So stay nearby... stay invisible... and make sure I don't do anything stupid. You've done it before."
