The Story

⚬ ⚬ ♦ ⥟ ⚬ ♦ ⥟

↪ 62* Saater (we'll call him that) grew up with loving parents in a world similar to ours. He was thoughtful, empathetic, friendly but a little cowardly. Avoided conflict, loved poetry, philosophy and music. He had an older brother, weak from birth, who was seriously ill. Saater was very attached to him.

Overcoming his cowardice, he always defended him and read poetry to him at home. Saater had true friends - schoolmates. They were almost inseparable. He liked one girl, but he was afraid to admit his sympathy for her. Perhaps his life would have turned out well.

But he lived in a country with a dictatorship. The dictator started a war and Saater, though he was a teenager, had to join the army otherwise his mother and his brother would have been imprisoned or killed. His father was killed in battle, his mother was killed by a bomb.

The helpless brother was left alone. One by one his best friends died, until finally it was his turn to die. His death was slow. He became entangled in barbed wire and bled to death.
When he woke up in the Forest, in the body of a deer with a human face and long black hair, he remembered nothing.

All that remained with him was the pain of losing his family and friends. Saater began to live in the Ruins, in the cemetery. He wept over unknown graves and slept in a deep pit. Other deer met him, and they were very kind to him. And soon Saater had settled into the Endless Forest.

Fernelescent and Widmung became mother and father to him. Rindea, Fjara, Atlas and Cu became his heartfelt friends. Soon Saater met his brother as well. In the Forest, his brother's name was Eris. Saater also met a beautiful white doe named Serra. He felt he had known her before.

Saater continues to sleep in the pit and weep over the graves, but when he meets his friends, he is happy and has great fun with them.

I started drawing Saater

I started drawing Saater yesterday, as I was laying in the pit in the cemetery, hoping you'd magically appear but my feelings trickled into it and as I lined him he looked like somewhere between Eris and himself. I decided to embrace it and morph them together and it came out looking like our roles had reversed and Eris's spirit is seeping into Saater's after he'd gone away... I hope they'll be reunited soon. There's a hole in my heart when you're not around.

I'll be getting a new phone soon, so maybe then I could take a better picture. It's all blurry.

Also Rin, your drawing is beautiful. You're like a ray of sunshine. Thank you for keeping me company until the servers went down. yesterday

Saater, it is through you

Saater, it is through you that I fully started to understand something of why this place is so special.

I was here before, many, *many* years ago, and back then there wasn't this forum as a backchannel to fill out the details of how we were in the forest.

Returning after such a long time, I discovered this part of the community, and the first post I looked at was one of yours. I read the story of your character, and I saw your artwork. And I saw your interactions with your friends here, and I started to look at *their* presence here, and what I saw was remarkable. Friendship, artistic talent, love, creativity.

There is something uniquely lovely about this place.

And whenever I see you, on here or in the forest, I have an extra big smile, because it is through you that I started to realise how lovely it all is. Seeing Saater *always* makes me happy.

I shan't mention your obvious talents, because you'll just be modest to the point of self-deprecation, but that's fine, I'll just say that they are noted and appreciated.

And I'll add my voice to the many others looking forward to seeing you back in the forest. <3

I just want to cry. I've never had such wonderful friends like you in my life! I was going away for a week, and I couldn't be in the Forest. When I arrived and saw how much you missed me, your masterpieces, my heart almost stopped beating. Hugs to you all, thank you so much for being you.

Ferne, I'm speechless. I have wandered without you exactly as you have drawn. But you bring light to my heart again. You have a very delicate sense, and you know how to convey it.
I have no words to tell you how much I missed you.

Rin, your artwork is full of light, warmth and tenderness. I felt the touch of an angel, it was you.

Oxyinco, you and I are truly one, brother. I felt exactly the kind of longing you painted when I missed you. Our emotions merged into one. The portrait is very sad, but it's gorgeous.
