Adelaïde was born to a world alternate to the earth, simialar, but in a period like the Victorian Era. Machines powered by steam and coal abounded, in greater numbers than of our period, to a point where even prosthesis was possible through such. Where she is from, the world is fairly corrupt and politics are complicated and many seek to manipulate others. Debt is a common state to be in, whether it is government fines, a loan, gambling, or maybe something worse. To repay debt, often, there are individuals who will take another human being as payment, forcing indentured servitude onto many. Children or other family members can be taken into most any kind of service, forced to a task until the debt is paid, though there are often mechanics that drag the period of servitude out far longer than necessary.
Adelaïde became a victim of this at the age of twelve, when she was taken from her family due to what her parents owed from unfortunate and rigged investments to the home they had never been able to pay off. With her looks, she was placed into prostitution and started work at an unforgivably young age. She did well with her work, but had endured incredible amounts of abuse and has come to accept atrocities as commonplace and expects compassion from no one. While damaged by the hardships over her life, she was not broken and had remained strong since the birth of her first child out of wedlock at sixteen. She had done anything and everything she could for her children, but she was a young mother and has had the maturity of an adult forced at a young age, and was thus stunted in a few areas. Still, even with the birth of her twins at nineteen, she refused to let her children go to the orphanage and worked even harder to earn her freedom and increase her meager stipends so she could pay to care for her daughters.
Life was hard for her and her family, and always, she sought a way to free her daughters from their mother's lifestyle. One day, a tall, but handsome man requested her. When she took him back, he paid her, but insisted only that they talk. He asked her strange questions, leaving her confused. The man left abruptly as he had appeared, though she had a feeling of deja vu.
It was days later that the brothel burned down, with herself and her daughters trapped inside. However, as soon as it ended, she found her eyes opening in a new place, full of unfamiliar sensations, along side her children. It was here her story would continue.
