Memento Mori Antler Charm

Carved from deer antler, and lightly polished.
This is only one of many many art projects (the only one vaguely TEF related) that have been keeping me busy and, therefore, not very active here.

If you're interested, I have a DA account. Where I'll be posting my other, non-deer related artings. Smiling

I like how the design adds to the natural beauty of this antler, especially in the way the lines curve. A really beautiful carving. =)

I really like the flowing lines on this piece, and how they circle the entire antler piece.

Gosh it looks like it was almost natural to the antler itself. Beautiful work. Would make a great chistmas ornament!! (:

It's very beautiful. I've always liked carvings, little tangible things you can hold in your hand and rub. Smiling

But why is it a memento mori? I guess I can see anything natural or from a living creature being a reminder of death, really, because all organic things pass back into the earth...but maybe that's not it at all. Just curious. :3

Hey Anjali, glad you like the piece!
You actually aren't that far off in your assessment at all!
This is actually the last piece in a series of six, five drawings, one carving that I created based on Memento Mori jewelery and the relationship to death that Memento Mori represents. The idea was to use a 'dead' media (antler and bone are often seen with this light) and represent the slow process of age and dying as a wearing/carving away of the antler.

Okay, thank you, Terabetha.

Okay, thank you, Terabetha. I usually associate memento mori with a skull or skeleton, but it's cool to see different takes on it! Very interesting, especially with the symbolic "decay" of the antler.

You're very welcome, thanks
