Have you ever heard of sickle-cell anemia? It's a mutation in a single gene that causes many, sometimes nearly all, of an individual's red blood cells to form in a crescent shape. This shape, unfortunately, cannot carry oxygen very well, which is blood's main purpose.

What's odd about sickle-cell anemia is that once we examine humans that live at or close to the equator, proportions of those with sickle cell anemia sky-rocket. It is common there.

Because, you see, the parasite that causes malaria thrives at the equator. The way this parasite infests the body is by invading the red blood cells. There it breeds and breeds and breeds. that is where the malaria comes from, the parasites in the blood.

However, individuals with sickle-cell anemia recycle their cells often in an attempt to carry more oxygen with newer cells which are more often properly shaped. Well, for this reason, the red blood cells are destroyed before the parasites can breed in them. What this means is that certain individuals with sickle-cell anemia are immune to malaria.

My point is, bad traits aren't always completely bad. You just have to use them right.
