Eris was a human of a meek soul and a body which he never felt quite right in. Partly because of his own mortality and partly because of it's structure. Some bones were too long, some too short, muscles... atrophied.
He was born with an illness that weakened his body and ate at his musculature. Through his childhood he spent most of his time in the forests and plains by his house and enjoying his brother's company. He wasn't able to play as his schoolmates had and his weak stature made him an easy target to pick on, so he generally avoided much contact with his peers. When they sought him out he was often rescued by Saater, his brother. Through his earlier years he was able to get around without much trouble but as time passed he felt his moves grow more and more unsteady and his walks were taken with a cane and a moderate amount of patience.
His world was ruptured by war. After Saater was drafted his days grew long and bleak, unable to walk the forest paths he used to love he spent his time reading in the nearby fields or simply daydreaming of a better world. He kept Saater's poems by his heart, always in a small notebook he carried with him.
On a warm, early summer day Eris strayed a bit too far from home, overexerted himself and had to rest before heading back. The sun was setting as he was mentally beating himself up about his mistakes but his train of thought was derailed when he heard a distant whirr which set off all the alarm bells in his head, even if he hadn't yet realised what it was. He looked up and watched its source fly by, not processing what's happening until he heard a series of explosions too close for comfort. He fell to the ground and cowered, covering his ears and closing his eyes, trying to will his reality to be a dream. But it wasn't. The wind was blowing at his back and stoking the fires ravaging his home as he wept, unable to move from that spot for hours.
After a few days spent lost, hungry and miserable he was found by officials and assigned into care of his relatives living in a city nearby. Their home was a tall building in the centre of town with many steps he could not manage to walk on his own, so his connection to nature and the outside world was mostly severed. His aunt was kind, she understood how hopeless he felt, sickly as she was herself, but that illness ended up being what killed her in a mere year. A week after she died he received a letter telling him of Saater's fall in battle, which snuffed out the remaining light in his eyes. He was left alone with a neglectful and abusive stepfather. Over the years in his care Eris' condition worsened and by the end of his life he could not stand anymore.
Every day he thought of the freedom death could bring. Every night he dreamt of his family. When he woke up engulfed in flames his first thought was "Finally, they came for me." He couldn't move, he didn't want to, he just sat up and took in his last visions of that world, however cruel it had been to him.
---
As a fawn he awoke in a field of gold, body small and frail but much stronger than he ever felt in his human life. It took him a while to figure out how to walk but as soon as he could, he tried to run. Then fell. Over and over again until he found his balance. He didn't remember his old life but his subconscious clung to it, he felt as if he was a bird released from a cage he didn't know he was in, into a world unimaginable.
Once he grew more stable he started exploring the forest but his days were spent without much company. He observed other deer and oftentimes came in for a sniff if their antlers did not have flames in them, but all seemed uninterested in sharing their time with him. So, he played alone, rolled in tall grass, soaked in the pond, spent time laying in flowers just taking in their scent and listening to the song of the forest. But feeling so isolated crept under his skin. He discovered the old ruins quickly and made a nest of the cage standing in the middle. There he spent many lonely hours until someone showed up.
A tall black and white deer, graceful and gentle took an interest in him and they clicked instantly. He smelled of the lilac flowers on his antlers, moss and dust of the old crypt underneath the ruins and Eris would never forget him. His name was Saater and bit by bit he shared with him the joy that can be found in the forest.
Bit by bit his memories came back and the first were sparked by their connection. He remembered his brother, younger then but now in an equal state of infinity, child, man and a dead soul all in one body. He cried, then, once again, the joy of being reunited and the crashing waves of the pain from his previous life mixing into one confusing typhoon of emotions.
Although his body was a deer's he soon learned he was not bound by the logic of physics ingrained in his head from times since past. He Learned to glide, to shapeshift and fuse himself with parts of the forest. He was introduced to others, a few passing strangers before Widmung arrived and taught him how to use magic. Despite the imposing appearance he was nurturing and kind. After that, the candles that some deer brandished did not scare him anymore.
---
Now that he's grown he became a sizeable and fluffy stag with long white hair, a splotchy gray pelt and face markings similar to those of his brother. He is very physically affectionate and will often show it by smothering others in his fur, rubbing himself against them or body slamming, though only those he's sure it won't bother. He tries to be cautious of other's personal space but sometimes gets overexcited and breaks a boundary.
He found a family, many kind creatures took a liking to him and he spends most of his time now in their company. He often dwells on his mistakes and fears creating a rift between him and his friends, a fear perpetuated by their absence. When so afflicted he will curl up in his old spot in the ruins and try to sleep it away.

The beautiful brothers,
The beautiful brothers, Saater & Eris. We really love them!
This started as a small doodle in my journal that i thought, maybe i should share...
I would like to try drawing them both together again soon and make something
that looks nicer and resembles them somehow more closely. We just think they
are both soooooo dreamy and love their stories and the bond they share so much!
