The Doctor is In

Ah, I see you have found my little hideaway. Well don't be shy, do come sit down, we'll have a chat you and I. It will be pleasant no?

The doctor-deer flashes you an unnaturally white smile, although the humour does not reach his eyes.

Will you sit down and join the doctor?

What is is this strange new trend? Musings of a Mind Doctor.

"What is this strange phenomenon I see...

These deer, they are...characters...from a human story? Yes, I recall now.

Charming England, a secret world of magic and wonder, hidden from the sights of ordinary people. A story of teenagers, children really, swept into unbelievable circumstances by forces beyond their control. A boy wonder. A struggle between good and evil. Classic storytelling elements really.

But now these characters arrive here...hmm.

...

Not surprising perhaps. There is no standard for arrival into this forest, who is to say that works of fiction cannot find their way here as well. I merely wonder at their...capabilities...of survival.

I do not deny that there is magic in this place. It is not hidden, in fact it announces its presence flamboyantly.

If I remember however...in their world, these characters must channel their magic through the use of wands. A typical device in human wizardry, perhaps an early phallic symbol for male magi to announce their prominence. I do not profess to be an expert in this study, but I must wonder...

If these characters must use these tools to channel their magic...how will they manage in this forest? Will the magic not be accessible to them, without such a device? The stories make note of how simply saying the spell will just not produce the desired effect.

Perhaps they will still use wands, although I spy a problem on the horizon in terms of...practicality.

It is of course possible for ones such as ourselves to manipulate tools with our mouths, although it is most definitely not an ideal means. Hooves are out of the question...it is too difficult to manipulate something with dexterity when you only have two 'fingers'.

Hmm...

...Further observations will be needed...

"Nothing more I can do..."

"I am Doctor Munchausen. Call me Doctor, call me Dok, I care not. I am here to look into your mind and fix what is broken. Speak up girl! Tell me why you are here so I may cure you and be done with it! I have no time for foolish games!"

The young girl looked up timidly as the tall doctor paced the small room. He was agitated today, refusing to settle into his chair as usual and let her do all the talking. Instead he prowled the room, anxious to be somewhere, anywhere but here with her. The worst was that he did not shout, his voice rose barely above speaking tones, but somehow the coldness in it could pierce the silence as sharply as if he had bellowed at her.

Before he could begin the words that she knew were on the way, she spoke in a voice that itself was barely a whisper.

"I'm here for my appointment Doctor...my parents send me to you so that you might cure me of the dark thoughts that make me hurt myself."

Abruptly the Dok stopped pacing and sat down heavily into the white leather chair that was the throne of his kingdom. His sharp blue eyes narrowed and he seemed to be peering through rather than at her face. Softly he spoke.

"Go on and show me your arms then girl, so that I can tell if you are lying. Have you hurt yourself this week?"

Anyone listening at the office door would have thought they heard a tone of gentleness, almost compassion in the Doctor's voice at that statement. The girl however knew different, she could see his eyes and the coldness that lay there, unfettered by the usual human feelings of pity and concern. Shaking slightly, she rolled back the sleeves of her shirt and turned her arms over to show him the soft undersides.

From her wrist to her elbow, new bandages covered her arms, the faint stains of blood beginning to show through in long lines. The Doctor looked at them dispassionately and tears began to stand out in the young girl's eyes.
