The Beginning

When I jerked awake, everything was dark. The smell of fresh earth and musk filled the small, warm space around me. I tried stretching, but my muscles were sore and cramped from being in the same position for long. A rising feeling of panic squeezed my chest, and I used my voice; crying over and over again, hoping that somebody would hear. A few moments passed, and I heard a thumping noise above me, shaking bits of dirt from the ceiling down onto my head. I cried again, this time louder than before; and I began to see the dirt room coming apart in front of me. Large, golden legs kicked and pried away caked mud and grass, causing bright daylight to shine into the hole they left. I screamed--the light was too bright. Through the tears blurring my vision, I saw a giant creature with fur the color of honey lift me up by the skin on my neck and carry me out of the hole. All I could do to ease the pain was close my eyes and bend my head down so that some of the soreness would be eased. Feeling something warm and damp coming down on my skin, I stiffened up in fear.
"No, child. Relax," a voice whispered to me.
I was still scared. Scared of the creature. Scared of being down in the dark hole. But something about the creature was comforting. It was wrapping itself around me, warming my body from the cold like the hole did.
