What is the exact age of your character—years, months, days?
25 years old- born on November 8th in 1983.
A place where your character is living or visiting begins to burn. The character has a few moments to escape. What does he/she grab—save?—before getting out of the fire and why?
He would try to save the few remaining things he has on his family (some photos, records and documents), and possibly his violin for its monetary and personal value. Though, he would certainly be devastated that he couldn’t save his great-grandfather’s piano. Also, he would make sure his dog, Stella gets out.
The character enters the room in which you are sitting. He/she sits down near you and places his or her left hand on the table or desk near you. Look at that hand. Describe it in as much detail as you can. Quickly. Go.
The back of his palm is somewhat pale, and he has long, slender fingers with exceedingly short fingernails out of bad habit. His hand is cool to the touch and the skin is smooth and soft. There’s a single dark freckle about an inch behind the knuckle of his ring finger, and a faded circular cigarette burn on the inside of his wrist.
This may be against your nature, but let’s at least pretend you’re a real snoop. You have access to a wallet, a pocketbook, or a purse belonging to your character. You have an opportunity to go through it, and—being a snoop—you seize the opportunity. What’s in the wallet, pocketbook, or purse? Take the stuff out. Describe it. If there’s lipstick, say what kind, color, what kind of container. Money? How much exactly and how is it organized? Keep going into the details of the contents. Is there something about which the character would be especially embarrassed? If so, what? If not, what do you make of that?
He has a dark brown leather wallet which is very worn-looking and the edges are rough and frayed, but it is far from being unusable. There is an ‘F’ embossed onto the front for his name. He’s had the wallet for many years, since his father gave it to him (and a matching one to Masque.) Inside, his license resides behind a clear slot which displays his information and a dated photograph. There’s also an ATM card and miscellaneous business cards that appear to have been kept for a long time. They advertise the local library, a music company, violin repair, the piano service company he used to work for, and a few for the studio he works for currently. He also keeps a total of about $32 in notes, but he doesn’t keep coins, preferring instead to use them for tips, collection jars, and donating to beggars.
While not kept in his wallet, he does always carry a pocket watch on him. It is tarnished silver on the back, decorated with engravings of flourishes and fleur-de-lis around a pair of antlers. The face displays a small crack across the glass, and it is attached on a silver fob. This was given to him by his mother and its one of his most treasured belongings.
You walk into a room in which your character is napping. Without waking the character up, you lean down, put your nose close to one side of your character’s neck—just below the ear—and sniff. Describe what you smell.
Nothing strong, but there’s a scent reminiscent of Earl Grey tea and something one would expect to smell in a store of antiques or old books. Not musty, but more like aged cedar and cologne from ‘back in the day’. It’s a simple and formal kind of scent.
Describe one meal or type of food your character really likes to eat.
He’s not strictly a vegetarian or anything, but he tends to prefer vegetables, salad, and wheat products. Strawberry poppyseed salad has always been a favorite, and he also has a weakness for cream of crab soup. Plums and blackberries are his favorite fruits, and he loves to snack on almonds.
Describe the social, political, and economic background of one of the character’s parents, one of the character’s siblings, one of the character’s friends, or one of the character’s rivals (defining “rival”—antagonist—in a way that makes most sense to you).
The best person for this would be his mother, Lily Rineheart. He always felt closer to her than anyone else. She was a French born woman who met his father in Italy and they moved in together in Germany, but she’s traveled much farther than just Europe. She comes from a wealthy background and much of her parent’s fortune was passed on to her, and then to her own family. She tended to be generous with money for her husband and her sons, just aiming to make them happier as the family started to deteriorate. Nonetheless, she did everything she could to raise her children properly but admittedly made the mistake of showing favor toward Fledermaus.
Describe one scar—it can be a very tiny one—on your character’s body and how it was acquired.
As described earlier, there is one (of five total) small burn scar on his wrist, while the others are higher up on his arms. They are cigarette burns, all from Masque way back before either of them left the house. The certain one in question was acquired when Fledermaus was twelve years old, Masque was twenty, their parents were in Central America, and things just got out of hand between them.
Describe in detail one thing your character would enjoy reading or some kind of text your character would enjoy examining—a text that might exist within the text of your story.
Fled loves to read- he’ll read most anything. He takes an interest in historical fiction and nonfiction, classic poetry, and of course music. He buys a lot of sheet music to play and a lot of used books. There’s at least ten books on his bookshelf published before 1900.
Your character laughs at something. What is it? Exactly why does your character think this thing—joke, event, sight, whatever—is funny?
He doesn’t laugh a lot, probably from his shyness, but instead he’ll usually put on a reserved smile. His friends can usually get him to smile, and he’ll find humor in the typical things- mostly observational humor or satire.
You are invisible; your presence is unknown by your character. You are observing your character look into a mirror. Describe your observations.
Usually he’s straightening up, combing his hair, and adjusting his tie and collar or whatever he’s wearing. He likes to appear well-dressed and clean-cut before leaving the apartment, regardless of where he’s going.
“France.” Your character hears that word. What, if anything, comes to your character’s mind? Be as specific as you can.
He’s been to France on three separate occasions as a child, and he liked the country (not much the experience) each time. He remembered the landscapes, the cliffs of Étretat and the museums and galleries in Bordeaux. The second trip to France was memorable mostly for his brother’s hellish behavior and him punching Fledermaus in the face, breaking his nose, and their parents fighting and yelling at Masque and each other.
His mother spoke French and taught some of it to him, and he also took lessons in school so he became a fluent speaker of the language.
Describe your character's room or living space in detail.
He owns his own one-bedroom apartment, which is small but affordable and he’s lived there for a few years. The walls of his room are a dark bluish-teal color, which were already painted when he moved in, but he’s grown to like it. The floors are bare, showing dark, unpolished, wooden floorboards lain out diagonally. On one of the walls, there are some nature photographs that he took hanging up. They have a rustic and vintage feel, as they were taken with an antique camera. The other wall has an oval mirror with an ornate, carved, black frame and the reflective surface is tarnished and faded; directly above it is a bleached white pair of deer antlers that he found in the woods a while back. There is a tiny closet in the far wall in which he has his clothes neatly hung up and organized, and a wooden desk next to it with a few books lined up alongside a metal typewriter and a bulky old camera. On the floor next to the doorway is a worn dog bed.
What does your character look for in the opposite sex? Describe his/her love life.
He only really looks for someone who loves him back, and luckily he found her. He considers himself very fortunate to be with Wyvern and loves her more than anything else. As of yet, there are no certain plans for the future, but he is fine with just letting things happen when they happen.
Reveal something about your character that most others don't know and wouldn't expect.
Well, he’s been known to be very forgiving, even at times that he probably shouldn’t be. With that said, he most certainly does not hate Masque. He’s scared of him, and uncomfortable talking about him, but despite everything that Masque did, he can’t bring himself to hate him. In a way, Fledermaus feels responsible for the way his brother turned out and at times he thinks he might have deserved some of the bad treatment. There are times where he feels bad for him and wants to help, but he’s just too afraid.
