"Don't go too far!", a mother doe called out to her two fawns - an older boy and a younger girl. The children were laughing and playing, running as fast as they could to tag each other. The doe kept on with her conversation among a few other adults. She did not keep her eye on the two...a fatal mistake.
The fawns disappeared over a hill, continuing their chase. They were young and naive, they didn't follow their mother's instruction as they were too caught up in the moment. The two stopped running, giggling and catching their breath. "Where are we?", the older of the two then asked. They looked around, unfamiliar with the area. "Mother? Mother!", the younger cried out.
No answer from the doe, though they would not expect the danger lurking nearby. "Oh little ones, I am your mother now.", they heard someone say.
The two turned their heads to see a suspicious doe approaching them. Her beady black eyes stared at the two, her mouth drooling in anticipation. "Who...who are you?", the older fawn asked.
She smiled back and said, "I am called Nekumbra, but you may call me Mother."
The two stumbled back, and were about to run when another creature blocked their path. She seemed to drop from the sky, landing before them, wings outstretched. The scaly dragon peered down on them with reptilian eyes, she had no expression on her face as she didn't have a mouth to smile with, but she spoke within their minds, "This is the wrong place and time for you."
Nearby, one more creature appeared, seeming to form from the ground itself. She was a slimy black, her body strangely liquid, with grey eyes that looked at the situation before her. She spoke to the two creatures, "Anirapio, Nekumbra, let's get this over with. Short and quick."
The fawns shivered in terror. Anirapio looked over to Nekumbra, "Which one do you want?", she spoke. The doe smiled, rising up on her spider legs before the little fawns. "I'll take the cute one.", she replied.
And just as quickly as she spoke the words, Anirapio charged, snatching up the older fawn. The fawn cried out as his body was pressed up against her, the dragon easily squeezing his body until several of his bones snapped. The fawn cringed painfully, his body going numb and surrendering. He rested his head on Anirapio's chest, crying in agony. She then shoved the paralyzed older fawn into her chest pouch, and proceeded to drain his blood and muscle tissue until his body had become shriveled.
At the same time, Nekumbra rushed overhead of the younger fawn, shooting a thick spider silk out from her belly. She caught the little girl and began to spin her quickly, the webbing wrapping up the struggling fawn. When she was fully cocooned, Nekumbra held her helpless body to her face, and whispered, "It'll all be over soon." She bit into the webbing, her venomous fangs piercing into the fawn's flesh, and soon she was drinking out her blood.
The process was over in a few minutes. Anirapio pushed the older fawn's body through to her tail and released him, a shivering body unable to move. He would be dead within a few moments. Nekumbra finished her meal and rested the little girl next to the brother, who was still wrapped up in the thick silk. The venom in her veins had killed her while Nekumbra was still feeding.
Satisfied with their meal, the Deadly Trio vanished from the scene.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"No!! How could they be dead?!", the mother cried out, her body collapsed beside the two dead fawns. She didn't understand what caused their deaths, but it didn't matter - the shock of losing the two of them was more terrible to her.
A passerby heard the commotion. He approached an already forming crowd of shocked and terrified deer.
What was it?, he began to think, his question answered by one of the spirits within.
The Deadly Trio did this. No doubt about it.
He pushed through the crowd and approached the weeping mother. Her head shot up at him, "Go away! Leave me to my grief!", the doe cried.
Sionnach looked down on the two fawns, he could see their spirits were still resting in the bodies. "Let me ease their suffering.", he spoke.
"Wha...?", the doe tried to say, but she stepped back and watched as the stag sat down by the two. He lowered his head and took deep breaths. And with each breath, a small amount of light came out from the bodies. Little by little, a pillar of light rose out, connecting with his own mind.
The others around clamored among themselves as to what was going on. Even the mother was shocked and awestruck. When the last little bit of the light rose out and connected, Sionnach stood and said, "It's been done. Your fawns are no longer in pain."
"What do you mean by that? They're...", the doe tried to say, but Sionnach cut her off, "They're dead, I know. But their souls were still lingering, still writhing and crying out. I told them to follow me, and they listened. Now they are with good company, and I even see them playing. Don't cry for them any longer, be happy that they are at peace."
He turned and walked away, the others around him silently letting him pass. The news about the two dead fawns would spread throughout the Endless Forest, and quickly it would be realized that Anirapio and Nekumbra were the perpetrators of their deaths. Very few would mention Sionnach's act of generosity, as many of them simply didn't believe what they saw.
He would walk on, catching a glimpse of the two playing and laughing over a blanket of flowers. Whether they understood his gift or not, it didn't matter. He did what he thought was right.
This is wonderful, Quad.
