The Tribe (input needed)

Serrod's picture
I'm currently reading a book called "People of the Nightland" which is part of a large series of fiction books focusing on different North American Tribes, and it gave me the idea to make a "native" tribe of deer who are believe to have lived in the forest since the beginning. This tribe would follow certain rituals such as gatherings, dances, etc. It would play into a group of deer who live and breath old tales of the Twin Gods and other legends and myths dedicated to why certain things happen in the forest and how certain "modern" myths came to be, such as the Deermuda Triangle.

So, does anyone have any input?

That sounds interesting but

That sounds interesting but maybe a little hard to organize? :\

I think that's a wonderful idea, you could organize it on another account? Maybe where the other member of this tribe could post stories and whatnot?

Yes, it could be to a point but I'm really obsessive when it comes to organizing so chances are that I would spend time sorting everything out and planning things. :]

That's what I was thinking. Sort of how they set up the Rut on a totally different account?

This makes me think a lot

This makes me think a lot about a writing/art event I held called Forest Fables, a lot of stories about how things in the Forest came to be. You're more than welcome to look at those stories and maybe get some ideas.

As for this, I may participate in it. It sounds fun. Eye

That's amazing! o.o If only I would of been there for that! I love coming up with myths and legends for fiction sites!
Laughing out loud I'm happy to hear that you're interested in it!

Serrod - You're more than welcome to participate in it, actually. I never planned to 'end' it, in fact I'll bump that topic now so that it might spark some interest again. Eye

That's a cool idea, I want to see how this turns out.

It sounds like a lot of fun.

It sounds like a lot of fun.
But not trying to be mean, herds are not very welcome in the forest. They can cause massive problems and fights over petty little things are bound to come out of nowhere and explode. Such as people thinking there better than others and what not. Depending on how well managed this 'tribe' is will determine its outcome.

I would be interested

I would be interested

Just because it’s a “tribe”

Just because it’s a “tribe” or “herd” does not mean anyone outside of the tribe/herd has to be excluded from them or to feel left out. The ‘tribe’ could just share a common background and customs. They could be very friendly to outsiders and welcome them as brothers even though they do not share history.

I rather like the idea. : ) I have a deer Native American based deer (though I haven’t worked on him much) who would fit in with a tribe. And I know one other deer character who is Native American base. Maybe they would be interested too? I could mention it to them.

BrokkenSaint -- I hope it

BrokkenSaint --
I hope it turns out good, if I go through with it. :]

Kitrako --
That's understandable. I can see how people may get like that, but I plan on this not being "only so and so may join", "no skull/dotd masks," etc. That way everyone is welcome to come and go with their own characters.

Faunet --
Thank you for your interest!

PrairieWolf --
That's what I had in mind. No exclusion of any deer not born within the tribe. :]
And I plan on making a "Native American" based deer too. That way I can get more into the tribe than if I just use Rush.

Perhaps the tribe before coming to TEF were represented by the image of the deer? Or had you planned on them having always been deer? Perhaps this is their afterlife since they were represented by the deer and find all of TEF as sacred. Along with the other deer of the forest not of their tribe? Just throwing some ideas at you if you haven’t already thought of them. :- P

My deer's name is Ahanu. As I've said I have not worked on him much. Poor boy doesn't even have his bio' yet. But originally he was going to be a young, overly eager warrior (and a bit of a goof off) who was felled. Then lead by his guardians to the forest upon his death. But I can change this or that to fit in with the tribe's history once you and/or we have it worked out.

If things workout I also have a doe I will be adding to my list soon that might fit well in with the tribe as well. I was debating on making her the sister of my Reimu but I wasn't completely sure on that.

I was thinking around the

I was thinking around the line of the "native" deer seeing all deer as the reincarnation of ancient beings. So pretty much what you said. xD

And if you want, his history would work just fine. Perhaps this tribe (if it is made in the end) accepted him in as one of their own? That way, you don't have to change his history at all.

Well, if Ahanu doesn't work I

Well, if Ahanu doesn't work I could always stick with that doe I told you about. I just thought Ahanu might have fit as being born into the tribe but now I think he probably wouldn't. Summer's, my doe's, history is completely up in the air at the moment. I had some ideas but nothing solid. Mostly just her personality and some fine details about her character are concrete. Reimu is also more like a pure TEF deer. So he could work. Reimu has a bio' if you like to take a look. :3
Serrod's picture

I like Reimu's history! It's

I like Reimu's history! It's very neat and interesting! I just got one of my soon-to-be "native" deer characters set. I just need to make a biography for her. Even if this idea doesn't go through, I still plan on making her. xD

This idea has me so intrigued I have already began making a blog layout for future deer char., while also running several ideas to fit this "theme" through my head.

My only issue (and it really

My only issue (and it really is only a personal point for me) would be that you should make sure you do adequate research if you plan on emulating a specific Tribe or First Nations group. If you plan on making your own unique one then this isn't really a problem, but I'm never fond of when people simply skim Wikipedia and then create a character and label it 'Algonquin' or 'Inuit' or what have you (Canadian examples because that's where I'm from).

Best of luck with your tribal endeavors!

OMG if you do, Damaetas would

OMG if you do, Damaetas would surely be in it:) Although I think he wouldn't realize it until someone told him, and it would explain his yearn for storytelling and collecting old trinkets:P

Terabetha --
Of course! I hate when people do things like that. I remember one person in my class had to write a report on a Native American Tribe and got all of her information from the movie "Dances with Wolves." She put no research time into it at all, but still got an B despite her actual knowledge of the tribe.

I actually thought about taking different aspects of various tribes (not only north american) and weaving them together.

Two --
Being my stalker self, I found his bio and he seems like a neat character! Laughing out loud I have a terrible memory for pictos so I have no idea if I've seen him before or not. xD

Guh I had the same thing

Guh I had the same thing happen recently at school (I'm at an art university and thankfully the teacher was as unimpressed as I was Sticking out tongue). I like the idea of mixing various aspects together, and that would allow players have a bit more customization freedom when making their characters (verses if they all had to be from the same tribe).
I'll be keeping an eye out for this Tribe in the future!
Serrod's picture

I hate when people restrict

I hate when people restrict others from doing what they want with their characters (reasonably, of course.) I find that it would be too....what's the word....bland if the Tribe was only based on one specific real life tribe. With the different pieces from different places, it would welcomes all walks of life. Laughing out loud
