Part I | Part II | Part III
The equilibrium had shifted and it did not go unnoticed.
Ravenflight stood vigil by Dandelion Hill as she had done for weeks at a time. It had become a source of hope for the doe who had lost her way; and a mark of a promise she had made to herself, to keep it safe. But it had been a year since that day, and even the most faithful can begin to falter. Days passed, months came but the one called Iaurdagnire had not returned. Ravenflight had begun to doubt her cause, but the doe had nothing left, nothing to fight for, so she clung to the fading hope that time would turn back and death would be undone.
It was a pulse at first that carried Ravenflight away from the dandelion, drawing her closer to Red Hill. She could feel tiny streams of energy like cracks in the earth quiver, and a bizarre sense of warmth emanate from the ground itself. The fog was heavy and her eyes were tired and dull, but she continued on brushing into the odd shrub or stump on occasion. As Ravenflight neared the summit, her feathers began to bristle and the little cracks of energy swelled before dissipating and vanishing completely. In her mind, the suppressed memories of battle slowly came back to her, and it was at that very path and Red Hill itself where she faced certain demons and faced certain deaths; this was her
death-site. As the doe lowered her head to sniff the ground, she felt a large surge; almost as if it were a burst.
Her heart quickened with fright and as the doe looked to the sky she saw the clouds part and a small black figure plummeting from the heavens; a small spark following close behind. Moments later the earth itself shook and a thunderous crash echoed through the forest, birds send into a murmuration above the canopy.
And now she was running, her naught form filled with adrenaline back to Dandelion hill. Others had scattered and when the dust finally settled she saw the small crater that had slammed into the earth.
Others moved about, but she stood there in mere disbelief as a lump formed in her throat. Ravenflight stared, quivering at the sight of blood and fur and tines that reached up to the heavens themselves.
“Iaurdagnire…”
