The Slumbering Tree (Officially ended)

quadraptor's picture
Thank you all for the participation, this has been a great event! I still have a few dreams to write but they'll be done very soon!

The weary blackbuck's body has morphed. His body no longer covered in black and white fur, but rather bark of green and khaki.

His newly grown antlers fan out and become branches and leaves.

He curls his body, he rests his head. His eyes shut.

And then his body does not move again. He no longer is an animal but a tree.

It sprouts quickly, upon the side of his body grows a tree trunk, a young tree.

The tree branches out, reaching toward the Sun, an obelisk through his body.

Beneath him grow roots, that sustain his body, that keeps him alive.

His eyes are sealed shut with amber tears.

But he is not crying in sadness...

He is dreaming...

Very

Happy

Dreams

The blackbuck slumbers here, where the Pond laps in gentle symphony.

He cannot move, he cannot speak, but he can feel your presence if you are near.

Sit with him, rest your weary bones, leave all burdens with him.

And you will feel love and comfort flow.

For even as a tree...

His light continues to heal and protect his friends...

Do not weep for him while he slumbers this way,

For in time he will be his old self again.

And this will seem only like a pleasant dream...

Nothing more...

-------------------

A sweet voice...

A sweet voice...

What was she saying?

His eyes opened

He wasn't in the Endless Forest

But he was somewhere else

He was still in black and white fur as always

But his body...

He was covered in roots

Some even seemed to enter into his stomach

Nurture...Nurture...

Listen...

Listen for her voice...

What was she saying?

He tried to lift his head

He felt so heavy

As if...

As if there was a tree that held him down

He saw it, growing out of his side

What had happened to him?

This wasn't some kind of punishment...

He hasn't felt any pain...

And those dreams...

They were so beautiful...

He was given so many wonderful dreams from his friends...

What did it all mean?

What was she saying...?

His eyes closed...

He was too tired to even think...

He rested...

"....Quad...."

"....Quad...."

"....Quad...."

"....I love you....Quad...."

-------------------

"Who are you? Who are you?"

The blackbuck calls out to the voice who speaks to him.

And a moment of silence, he waits and thinks he is once again alone.

But then she speaks to him again:

"Quad, it is Gaia, Mother Nature, I am the one who has spoken to you.

You have done such a beautiful thing here,

And you don't even realize it, for you have slept for so long.

Your friends have come and sat by your side.

Even those who do not know you have come to rest.

You have given them a gift that is worthy of praise.

For you took their burdens, their grief, their sorrow,

And transformed them into visions of their dreams."

Orbs of light surround him here.

In each one, he sees a pictogram.

Each and every pictogram of those who visited him.

"Quad, you are a servant of my Earth.

And for giving yourself freely in transforming as a tree

I will give what you have wished for...

I love you, Quad.

You are a child of Nature

And you have my blessing."

The blackbuck closes his eyes

The roots release him

His body transforms

Bark becomes fur...

Branches become antlers...

Stillness becomes gentle breaths...

The blackbuck, once troubled and burdened...

Became enlightened

This event will officially end on Saturday, October 15th

Feel free to post a screenshot of your deer sitting with him if you'd like.

Or if you'd like, just write an experience you had with him, including if your deer speaks to him.

Anyone is welcome to sit with him, even if your deer has never met him before.

I may describe his dreams here as well, and they may include your deer.

Also if he sits up, it's either me accidentally waking him up or to sneeze off any excess spells anyone may have given him. Just ignore that and pretend he is still sleeping.[/center]

Bayleen's picture

A dark burgandy doe was

A dark burgandy doe was watching from a distance, behind a tree stump.
She had spotted the odd being, seemingly glued to the floor of the earth and submerging into the soil of the forest.
She had recognized him from somewhere.
A place, a friend.
It was the friend who had given her the white feather that she placed in the center of her forehead.

She walked closer to the sleeping being and cautiously lied down beside him. Her dark gold eyes examined the being.
All was quiet. The silent sway of the lake was like a lullaby.
A "pat-pat" sound was heard as the light brown willow leaves became too weak to hold on to the branches and then fell to lightly land on the surface of the water. "Plop"- a flabby toad leapt in the cool water.

The doe sighed. Turning her gaze back to the being, she got back to her hooves. Then, very carefully, she decorated over him and around him, sprouting dainty flowers and blossoms that sprouted from the soil around and on the sleeping being. Once she was done, everything was blended with the ground, the being was practically camafllouged.

A butterfly fluttered by, landing on a flower for a few moments, and then flew away.

The doe watched and stood there for a long while. Finally, she bowed to him and then turned to leave him in peace.

"Sweet Dreams."

Plains of flowers, waving

Plains of flowers, waving strands of red and gold
Butterflies of every color flutter and enjoy the land
With a breath, a scent enters and fills his lungs
The wondrous smell of oak, though strangely out of place here
But he closes his eyes and smiles
That smell...it made him remember old times
When his eyes were newborn,
When the world was filled with strange smells
But that scent of oak...
It was what made him feel safest the most

A dandelion sprouts beside

A dandelion sprouts beside the tree, coloured white, save for a spot on the top, as if a single drop of blood has rained down from the sky to bless the plant.

a song seems to sound as the wind rushes through the seeds, a music box note for each that flies away, until at last they are all gone.

The red is the last to fade.

Now he sees something truly

Now he sees something truly fascinating. A great hall, pillars of gold and crimson, a floor of checkered white and ruby so polished that it seems to reflect all around. The blackbuck can even see his own face staring back up at him, though in strange colors.

He walks on, his hooves echoing through the place. The only other sounds he hears are the flickering of candles and a slight howl of wind through the strangely vacant surroundings. But something else catches his attention.

A bell. It is faint, but he hears it.

He soon finds a marbled stairway, it spirals upward to an unknown destination. His curiosity sets in, and he climbs. He must stop to catch his breath, but he keeps going, the sounds becoming more and more loud and clear.

Until he reaches the top, and finds a grand bell tower. In the distance he sees a wondrous sunset that paints the sky burgundy, and a crimson sea matching and stretching for what seems to be an eternity. He hears the sounds of the ebbing and flowing waves as they crash on the beach nearby, and elsewhere he hears the strange laughter of seagulls.

Nearby he sees a rope attached to the greatest bell. He notices a pictogram etched into the side of the bell.

"So it was you who gave me this dream...thank you...", his words seem to hover in the air, as if he were speaking to no one close by but to a cosmic being.

And with a tug on the rope, the bell tolls, setting off other bells close by.

The quiet erupts in harmonious splendor.

"Ah, Quad." The doe slowly approached from the forest. "Remember me? We had a date once.. And I'll admit, I only did it for the laughs.. And your farting actually did annoy me a little, haha. But not all that much." She giggled a little, then smiled. Remembering old times. "I'm amused by all the changes that happen to you, Quad."

There was a scent in the air.

There was a scent in the air. It was sweet, nostalgic...

The blackbuck smiles, and chuckles, it seems to echo through the wind.

Cay Lynn...Cay Lynn...he remembers her well.

Change is inevitable, but he wonders what she even means by changes that happen to him...

He shrugs and walks on, in a random direction, across hills and valleys.

His laugh still lingering in the air...still echoing...

Moonlight serenade, dancing

Moonlight serenade, dancing beneath the glow of lamps that seem to hover overhead. He watches the dance of thousands of deer, they prance around each other, all with eyes as starry as the sky above.

The dreamer does not join them, for a very simple reason. These deer are all deceased, their lives had ended at one point or another, yet here they are, as giddy and as proud as they were when they lived.

The blackbuck watches them embrace one another, nuzzles so ethereal and affectionate that they seem to melt into one another.

And then the blackbuck's eyes catch a glimpse of a simple creature flying overhead. The silhouette of a raven appears in the glow of the moon.

"Illrose...only you would show me such a beautiful vision. Thank you...", he smiles and bows to the flying specter, who seems to vanish after, taking his message back to the Endless Forest...

And now he sees a field of

And now he sees a field of silk
No danger present as he crosses here
The bones of resting creatures are submersed
But it was their choice to come and sleep
He sits among them, one by one
Kissing the skulls, and speaking a phrase to each
So that they continue to rest in tranquility

The blackbuck crosses over the silken blankets
His hooves do not get tangled within
He already knows his passage is safe
This was not a place of fear or hatred
But rather a place of reverence to the deceased
He is endlessly thankful for a moment's remembrance
To the spider who gave him this vision

The rose-tined stag draws

The rose-tined stag draws near. He watches. Waits, for a moment - hoping the crowd will disperse, and let him be at peace alone with the sentient, living plant.

The crowd stays.

He sits. For the longest time he watches, cerulean-blue irises cast downwards, pupils wide and sad. Such melancholy moods frequent his person these past few days. He wonders if it will rain for them.

But then - when he starts to believe that he is being foolish - he feels himself relax. Worry eases; a golden doe rests in his mind still, but he knows she will return home to him safely. One can only lose someone so many times. She always comes back, does she not?

Rutilus rests his head on the ground by his friend's side, and smiles.

Never pegged you as a plant.

quadraptor's picture

My dear friend, oh how grand

My dear friend, oh how grand you have grown.

I now see you, upon a hill engraved with shimmering garnets.

You who wears antlers as sharp as the most perfect of arrows...

But you who, inside, carries a heart so strong and a will so bright.

My dear friend, I see why it is you who the Sun adorns upon your antlers.

There are many who give me inspiration and courage to continue on...

But you, Virgil, you are among the brightest of harts.

------------------------------

Then there was a dream he saw

A vivid golden field, waving back and forth

And in the center was a great tree

He looked upon the bark of the tree

And saw waves of gold were etched within it as well

But this tree had earned it's golden bark not by force

Nor by greed nor by intimidation nor by seduction

But rather, this tree earned this golden bark by it's humility

For every say, it sheltered the tired, it gave a home to the weak

It protected the innocent, it nurtured the imperfect

And the blackbuck immediately knew who this tree paralleled

"Rutilus, my friend, you are a beautiful soul, and your worries should be few."

The blackbuck rested beneath the tree for a moment

A smile upon his face, a glimmer of loving warmth

Something very unusual stroke

Something very unusual stroke on her senses. A dreaming mind - that was nothing as unusual, but there was no sleeping deer around. And still, she could feel this out here. Dreams are supposed to stay within, not to leak and spread throughout the woods.
She sniffed in the air - it was actually not a smell she sought but that delicate feeling only a dreaming ones creates. It would be easy to track such strong and unique trail.

When Foxbrow got to the shore, it was obvious that some of the other deer noticed the same thing she did. The crowd down there around that tree was there fore some reason. After a closer look she finall knew more. It was that large clumsy hulk, who was the sleeper. Quad - that's how others call him. But his dreams weren't bad, she already had a chance to find this out.
But there was something more about it, something warning. No, it's not this tree he somehow formed into, it is just a mere feeling, an old remembrance...

The two marble ones, they warned her. They have forbidden her to do this again - to crawl into these strong unusual... dreams...

However, she was never faithful once it comes to obeying the rules. But not now, there are too many deer around. She will wait. Her own interest would make her patient for once.
Some walked away, some new arrived. But after some time even the last of them finally left, leaving Quad there alone. Just with her.

She inspects him - a sleeper shaped in tree, having many sorts of dreams. And yet, some strange suspicion - that he is not sleeping at all, that he is awake and fully aware of what is happening.
Foxbrow hesitates.
It wasn't any pleasure the last time.
But she had already decided. The only way to satisfy her curiousness now is to lay down, relax and open her mind while falling asleep...

For a brief moment, he

For a brief moment, he stopped and looked upon a distant hillside. There he could have sworn he saw the silhouette of a young doe. A crown of feathers rested upon her antlered head, and he caught a glimpse of her face, the smile making his body shiver in excitement.

Perhaps she was dreaming as well. He wondered if she was a reality or simply a figment of his imagination. But he knew her, he knew who she was, he knew...

"Foxbrow, Foxbrow, may you have pleasant, wonderful dreams...", he called to her, but in a moment, she seemed to disappear.

It did not matter, she would receive the message in one form or another.

The blackbuck was just very happy to see another sharing such a beautiful countryside.
quadraptor's picture

A flat land, cold wind

A flat land, cold wind blowing, but not uncomfortable. The blackbuck realizes his fur is much thicker here. There seems to be no one else close by, but he is enjoying the quiet night.

His eyes gaze to the sky. The stars have never looked more beautiful. He notices a constellation forms into a familiar symbol, the brightest stars creating the shape in the mass of sky lights.

Before he can speak the name, the sky erupts in brilliant color. The aurora fills his eyes, as he has never seen one before. He smiles and speaks, his breath lingering before his eyes...

"Toukan, I never would have imagined your paradise to be this beautiful. Thank you..."

Fruit so sweet dangles above

Fruit so sweet dangles above his head. He reaches and easily pulls a mango from the tree. Biting in, his mouth is filled with juices so flavorful and exotic, his eyes close in sheer pleasure.

The humid breeze coming from the ocean fills his nostrils. He stands and takes in the warm tropical sunlight. The crystal clear water flows through his hooves, sending coolness through the blood in his legs. It is a strangely comforting feeling.

The aftertaste of the mango keeps his lips smiling, and all his senses are tuned on this island. In the water, he sees a pictogram form from hermit crab shells beneath the gentle ripples of the water. The blackbuck bows and speaks,
"Oh Ocean, how could I ever thank you for this?"

The young stag approached,

The young stag approached, fascinated by the sight before him. Curious, he thought. What could cause such a change?
He sat by the one who had been a deer just recently, puzzled by this.
"I do not know you well." he started, not even sure if this deer would hear him. "But I have seen you in the forest many times before. You are a part of this forest, along with all the others. Maybe even more now. A fascinating change, I must admit. Maybe it offers you a chance to see our home in a different way. If so..I hope you will share what you have learned someday."
The stag finishes, laying down in the grass next to this strange tree-deer. As company, if nothing more.

(Just scribbled something. Zach doesn't know Quad personally, but he's sitting with him for now. ^_^ I love these small involvement activities, and Quad is a fascinating character. I hope you continue the great work.)

A field as far as the eye can

A field as far as the eye can see
White as snow, but not at all
Dandelions cover the land
The blackbuck walks here, curiously
Careful not to disturb the plants
They are beautiful, fragile, whole
And just as he settles
The wind picks up
And carries all the seeds to the sky
And in a moment, he catches a glimpse
Of Zacharias' pictogram forming in the breeze
A simple smile, and a simple bow
Another moment of solace experienced

---------

Now the blackbuck finds a place
Where a rivers flow in gentle progression
Here he sees willow trees swaying on the edge
And curiously, they make sounds like harps
As they sway from the flowing river
The blackbuck approaches, and rests underneath
His eyes rise and listen to the melody
It is soothing, beautiful, cleansing
The creature's eyes close and he catches a vision
Of a doe's loving face, her golden mane swaying
"River Song, you have a remarkable gift...thank you..."
He says, and nothing more

---------

A walk across a bridge shrouded in the night
The blackbuck stops here, his face illuminated by flame
He looks across, the darkness of the rippling water
Only the shimmering moonlight catches the waves
And as on cue, an event takes place here
Floating on the dark river were little candles
Adrift like stars, coming toward him
He watches as they pass underneath the bridge
And on the other side, they carry on
The stream of flame upon water continues
Until the entire river is lit and flowing
So here he sees the face of another in the reflection
A Spirit looks back up to him
He bows and thanks her for this as now he understands
It is a dedication to travelers, both living and deceased
