The stag sighed, peering in to the water. The forest's magic had changed him a lot. His face was not even a human face anymore, like it had been when he first arrived. His colors, they were odd and unnatural. Even his antlers had been a little changed, blackened.
Iphea wondered what it would be like to change back. He wondered what Roe would think if one day he came up to her and just sneezed a giant sneeze that made everything come loose. All the magic that had settled on him would just disappear in that characteristic puff of blue smoke. He had doubts she would like a deer that was the species found here over the species found outside. But maybe it was just him being... well... paranoid? Could you call it that?
Iphea sneezed. He lay on the ground by the pond for awhile, peering over the edge and in to the water at his human face. It peered back with a forlorn expression, but it was back to the way it had been before the magic, all excepting the color, of course. "I don't know how many times I have changed. Maybe this won't be the last time, but maybe it will." The stag sneezed again, his pelt becoming a suede-inspired brown with white flecks.
Thank the gods he did not shrink.
The beast rose to his hooves and peered around.
"If she finds me, I wonder what she would say."
Iphea traipsed off, peering at the forest, his eyes now in a position akin to predators, though he had always been prey. The stag pressed a hoof to a nearby tree, scraping free some mushrooms and coughing away the mask-spell after he ate them to satisfy the morning hunger in his stomach.
His head slowly raised, nostrils flaring to catch scent, before he moved off to a flower bed to rest among the blooms. Iphea smiled as he rubbed his cheeks in to the flowers, happy to be inconspicuous and naturally-coated among them.
Unbeknownst to Iphea, Roe had
The doe followed her mate, staying behind, but increasing her pace. She wondered what was troubling him, what was going through his mind. As he lay in the flower bed, he seemed more at peace. She stood back a moment longer, regarding him, before approaching.
Roe met Iphea with a nuzzle, probably catching him by surprise. She was standing over him - as much as her small frame allowed - looking down at his changed face. She nibble the top of his head and smiled. "Iphea . . . what's troubling you?" She layed down in front of him, so she had better view of his face and could look him in the eyes. Roe didn't remark on his appearance - not yet. Rather, she looked at him warmly. Lovingly. Something was bothering her mate, and she wanted to know what.
"Magic, Roe. I feel like I am
The stag sighed, peering back at Roe. "And I am worried that you would be upset to that. Especially since I used magic to lie... to consider myself a natural deer." His white-pupiled eyes closed, and he grumbled. "My eyes are scary enough as it is... that red-brown with pupils that make me look blind. A face that has such a short muzzle, nothing long enough to properly nuzzle you with. Teeth-" He opened his mouth for a moment, showing his tiny rows of human-like teeth. The face was pretty comical. "Like something that eats meat and plants in kind. A face like man and animal bred... I mean, don't get me wrong, this feels so natural.... but natural deer don't normally find man-faces to be... anything less than something to run away from. It's only instinct."
Iphea opened his eyes, looking again at Roe. She was beautiful as a doe, but he was grotesque as a deer of the forest's species, hybridized with outside species that he was also a part of.
Roe looked at Iphea. She was
The doe turned her attention to her mate once again. "You look handsome like this." She nuzzled him again, the anger that had flared up gone again. "And your eyes . . . they are intriguing. Your teeth . . .well, they're kind of silly. I'll admit that!" She snickered, her face was once again warm and she smiled brightly at him.
"You should look as you feel comfortable. The magic of the forest isn't a lie. It just . . . is. The forest pelts don't stick on me . . . I don't wear a mask because it's uncomfortable. And the antler spells? Those feel unnatural to me." She sighed again. "I guess I am who I always was." She layed her head down, her eyes still looking up at him. "Why would you worry what I think? I'll still love you." The last part came out as a whisper, barely audible. He was her mate. She knew how he felt. But part of Roe was scared to say those words out loud. "I want you to be who you are."
"Because I love you, Roe.
Iphea moved to take in a view of all of her face. It's not all that it's cracked up to be, you know. It's more difficult to graze, it becomes hard to get near trees to eat the mushrooms. Instead of just brushing your muzzle on the ground, you brush your whole face. But somehow, Roe, it feels like me. He could not finish the sentence himself. Instead, the stag snuffled in to the fur atop Roe's head.
Roe beamed hearing those
And she loved it.
"Iphea, I love you too. It's not your changing that bothers me. It's that I haven't changed. I guess, I feel like I don't belong. But with you . . . I don't feel that way." She listened to the shortcomings of having no muzzle while she nibbled at his neck. The doe understood the disadvantages. They made sense. But with his shortened features, Iphea could kiss. And what a feeling that was!
"If you like how you feel, then this is how you should look. You know that, right?" She continued nibbling his fur. "If you ever want to change again, there's always the forest magic." Roe pulled her head back and looked at her mate. He truly was handsome. She licked his nose. "You look very handsome like this. And I mean it. And your eyes . . .they are intoxicating. I could become lost in them." She smiled, nuzzling him. "You don't worry what I think. I'll love you no matter how you look . . . . except maybe with the peacock pelt." She pushed him lightly with her head, laughing.
"Hmhmhm.... that pelt..." The
"Even you change in De Drinkplaatz, yes? It's magic is more overwhelming than yours... Heck, even the deer that cross between the worlds are turned in to the inhabitants of this forest in there... I wonder what would happen if I cast a spell on you in there? As in... to seal the De Drinkplaatz magic in you and... you would be able to change, like you wanted. It's a foolish idea... but... there's a possibility it will work.
Iphea let a soft smile creep in to his features, but then hid it in her fur. "I want to give you everything, Roe." He let her see his face. "I want to make a mask for you from something as delicate as butterfly wings... lined with soft flower petals... so it is not uncomfortable no matter which face you have when you wear it. Mmmh..." The stag again buried his face in something, this time the flowers. They never seemed to crush, no matter how many lazed on them or fought on them. Such was the forest's magic.
"It may work . . ." Roe

(Sorry, I was going to reply
Iphea sniffed his mate, smiling. "Roe. There is not much else to tell." He smiled, kissing her cheek. Of course Iphea could smell the shift in her magic, the shift in her body. It was pleasant, and enticed his will to protect her. [b]"But if it helps, I also would like to hear it out loud."[b] The stag grinned, nuzzling his mate gently.
The stag peered around, making sure that they were alone. He wasn't sure that anyone needed to overhear their conversation. His neck-fur prickled protectively.
[No worries! Going to the ER
Roe smiled back at Iphea. It was time to tell him. "You remember when I healed you? How I fainted? That didn't happen the other times I used my magic." She pulled her head back, looking at him. "I've been more tired . . . thirsty . . .a little, sick?" Roe swivled her ears back and brought her muzzle to the stag's ear. "Iphea," she whispered, "I think I'm with fawn."
Roe wondreed what he would think. She didn't know for sure but . . . how she'd been feeling . . . and they had been together . . . The doe layed her head against his shouldr again, waiting for his reply.
"I could smell that something
Iphea held his joy in, radiating it in warmth for his mate. His gaze strayed repeatedly to her belly, before his ears fell in apology. So many new and different, exciting things in an afternoon.
"Not worried," Roe replied.
"A fawn, Roe. We will have a
"Walk with me, Roe? We need to find you some Raspberry Leaves... they will help." The stag bowed low, offering her his side to walk by. She must feel pretty tired.
Roe laughed as the leaves
All the tiredness couldn't damper Roe's mood though. Her tail flicked happily and she had a skip to her step as she walked next to her mate. Her fawn's father.
Iphea laughed, throwing his
The stag gave his doe her medicine, smiling. "Sometimes, you need a little sweetness to help the medicine go down, yes?" He spoke as she chewed. placing a kiss on her forehead before peering about to make sure they were safe.

Roe chewed her leaves and
The doe dipped her head, smelling the flowers in the blue bowl. She nibbled on a few before raising her head again to look at the stag. Already her stomach was calming. She took a step closer and rested her head against Iphea, closing her eyes and enjoying his closeness.
The stag took the opportunity
"I do not know if I would be able to forgive our fawn for causing you pain, Flower... I will have to, though." He mused grumpily. That was the thing he could not protect her from, the pain of childbirth. What-ifs buzzed like bees in his head, but he did not let them free from his mouth. No, she couldn't die... no, she couldn't get hurt.
Roe adored his affections.
