History. Ruled Egypt from age 27 (formally proclaiming herself as king at 29) to age 50, when she succumbed to a bone disease in early middle-age. While her rule was punctuated by disputes over true succession with her step-son, she proved to be an effective King of Egypt. She asserted her right to rule after her husband's death through her father, who was pharaoh before her. She was the only child left of his, and while her husband was technically king, Neferu was of a much stronger political character. This strength held back her young but hot-headed nephew from ruling until her own death. She bore two daughters, just over a year apart from each other. Their paternity was rumored to be not of her husband. He, however, had a son with a concubine. This son was the challenging nephew that would succeed Neferu. Towards the end of her rule, her High Priest died under mysterious circumstances. Among the achievements of her rule, she did much self-promoting. It could be seen as the reflection of a large ego, or the necessary steps to take to ensure political survival. It is likely some sort of mixture. |
