Dragonnade [Finata Diary Day 5] [Violence warning]

I thought I was safe with her...
Kalpita. My protector. My only friend. She drove away the bad deer and was always by my side. I thought she could stop anything. Then again...I also thought the forest was a nice place. We set out that day for another one of our little games. Our favorite game was spell tag. It was a very simple game. I would get spell, then we would rush over and spell another deer and invite them to get us back. It was good fun and usually deer were welcome to it and would laugh at our childish antics. Cute little fawns and their fawn games. We approached the largest group that day and I was giddy with excitement. This was going to be fun! Soon it became apparent that these deer were not fun.

I also thought the forest was a nice place...
but I, for the first time, discovered deer that were not nice. They were mean in fact. They were bad deer. I'd met what I thought were bad deer. The ones with big scary faces or the ones at the bottom of the pond. They never did what these deer did. These deer tried to kill me.

They were bad deer...
I didn't know it when I ran up. Most butterfly pelted deer were nice. Most deer were at least tolerant of my presence. I was smaller than the other fawns and they found it cute. The stags called me a little runt and may push me away but they never lowered their horns. They never struck me. They never hit me. They never tried to hurt me for no reason. The deer with the skeleton pelt and real face reared up and I couldn't help but giggle. Rearing? PLAYING! I loved to play. I motion to Kalpita to spell him with the mask. He would play spell tag with us wouldn't he? Look hes fun! I reared up in return and laughed, but it was cut short when the bright light of the magic faded away and the hoof descended. His horn caught me in the side and I found myself flipped into the air for a rough landing. Everything was spinning. I couldn't think, I couldn't move. All I knew was that he wouldn't stop trying to hurt me and they were laughing. I scrambled to my feet and tried to run, screaming for Kalpita. For mother. For father. For someone to protect me from their attacks.

These deer tried to kill me...
and Kalpita tried to defend me in vain. She could hold back one...but as more deer entered the fray it was too hard to keep track of. I scrambled and twisted under the fight trying desperately to escape the chaos and bloodshed. They were hurting my friend. They were hurting me. And because...we walked over. Because I looked at the deer. Was it wrong? Is it wrong to look at another deer? Is it wrong to try and meet a new friend?
To look at a doe...because she looks like your mother?
I miss mother...
I want to be safe.
Why can't I be safe any more?

Kalpita tried to defend me in vain...
but succeeded in comforting me. My legs hurt, my side bleeding, and my head still spinning. I couldn't see straight and stumbled away from the scene in a haze. My legs seemed to carry me against my will and I deliriously sauntered for the pond. I was so thirsty...just some water...that's all I want. Kalpita caught me by the scruff of the neck before I collapsed and carefully dipped me in the pond to wash away the fluids streaming out of my new wounds. I whimpered softly and curled up by her side when I was finally placed on the ground.
The forest was not a nice place and I needed her now more than ever.
I am no big kid...
I thought I was.
But..I need my imaginary friend now more than ever.

He is scared and suspicious of other deer. He clings to Kalpita and cries for her whenever another deer approaches. He cowers, hides, and runs constantly from any who try to approach him. If Kalpita is present he will hide behind or under her for protection until he knows it is safe. He cannot run quickly and is somewhat delirious due to his injuries. Only time will tell if he recovers.

It's a learning experience at the least. I figured he'd come across some bad apples eventually.

Envy and Lust are not bad

Envy and Lust are not bad deer.

This was a misunderstanding.

Not really. /shrugs He

Not really.

He walked up, Envy got angry and attacked him for being near Lust.

It's stated clearly on their biographies that they're prone to that behavior.
Their deer have a negative character trait that spurs them to acts of violence and aggression.
It's just how they're made and played.

I didn't say it was a bad thing. Every story needs villains eh?
The Forest ain't always rainbows, sunshine and dancing. Eye
Figure it was just some time until my little fawn had to face that hard reality.

Lust and Envy didn't attack

Lust and Envy didn't attack over each other.
Lust would never attack fawns...get that understood.
Envy was trying to get everyone away. Then your deer reared...which was a misunderstanding.
When Kalipta reared and started to fight Envy...Lust couldn't sit by a watch as Envy is sick.

A big ole' barrel of misunderstandings. 83
But. You can keep it how it is for your story.
Just don't go running around thinking we attacked you
for approaching. Because that wasn't the case. Oh and...
on Lust's biography it says 'does'. It never says fawns. XD

MrsHalloween- I know after

MrsHalloween- I know after the fact now, but at the time of observation and writing it was: Envy getting angry and flipping out on a little fawn.

That is how he, and at the time, I saw it. He is one hell of an unreliable narrator (see: he thinks his reflection is another fawn trying to fight him), but that is frankly how the situation played out from my point of view. There was no warning, nor any indication that the deer didn't want company. a few head shakes of 'No' would have probably sufficed to send them away without incident. Instead it went straight to blows and I reluctantly typed it out.

I don't want people's deer to appear violent.
I don't want people's deer to look trigger happy and willing to attack at the drop of the hat.
But when the player chooses to have their deer react in that manner, I half-heartedly jot it down.

when it comes down to it there is no distinction between 'I'm lowering my horns to ask you to back off' and 'I am lowering my horns to hurt you.'

It is almost always interpreted as the latter regardless of whether it's put on the bio that 'no no this means go away!' or not. It just doesn't work that way in forest. Everyone inherently knows that lowering horns equals you mean harm because that is ingrained in the gesture.

Yes there was communication failure, but frankly it wasn't on my/Kita's end. We only are able to interpret whatever emotions we are given, and those were all negative/violent. There was no way for either of us to know you did not mean it as 'an assault for walking up' and we were on MSN chatting at the time(I'm always on when i'm in forest) trying to figure out what was going on as it happened.

It came to the consensus after bio snooping that the only logical explanation for the behavior was because Envy was attempting to protect Lust from a child. It didn't make much sense to us either, but it is all we had to go off of. The lack of communication in forest, for all of it's blessings, turns out many of these situations and misunderstands.

Regardless, it won't be happening again since I now reluctantly have to make him avoid both deer. I made the decision when I started this project to never allow information 'beyond the 4th wall' or 'after the fact' between players to influence his behavior. It's not like a deer that has (in his mind) wronged him can walk up in forest and apologize or explain the misunderstanding (atleast not that I can think up unless the two run into him later and not react rashly) so he will continue to live with this one snapshot for his reference of who they are.

No, I am not made at you two as the players. What you choose to do with your deer is your own business, I will just have mine react accordingly.

Accordingly, in this situation, however has had a very negative effect essentially cutting them both out of his forest life forever and making him prone to believe that any deer within their radius are in imminent harm. It's stupid and childish, but then again so is Finata.

He just doesn't have the capacity to see that a deer's personality cannot be judged by the first meeting because of how young he is. He always reacts in extremes to the point of believing that certain deer cannot do any wrong and that other deer are evil floating monsters based solely on their appearance (Kovah, hes got that one completely wrong).

@Unplugged- This one will continue for a few months. He is scheduled to grow up sometime in the summer. Depending on how busy my schedule is depends on how often he gets played/written for.
