Oh and yes: Do not wonder about what Monde says about deaths in fire. It's true; you need a really hot fire to also burn the bones, and a normal forest fire cannot do it. At least I've read it like that, lol.
And yes, Monde is growing to get weird abilities which are actually normal for her but... ah, enough previous babbling. Let's move to the story now!}





A boy is coming. Not much older than me.

« Are you a fairy deer? You have a funny face. »

I ignore him. What a silly head.

« Do you live here? »
« Yes. What do you think? »
« That you live in the herd. »

I look at him. Brown eyes.

« You have beautiful green eyes. »
« … »
« Don’t you want to talk with me? »
« … »
« Are you afraid of me? »
« Absolutely not. You bore me. »



He comes again, brings me food, tells me stories about the world.
I learn. I learn about the world.

« What is your name? »
« Dia Monde. »
« Dia…mond? »
« Dia Monde, can’t you hear this properly? »
« But… Monde means ‘world’, doesn’t it? In another language. »
« Very clever. »

I am listening, listening to the animals around me, their stories. Listening to the stones, their stories.

« Don’t you want to know my name? »

I don’t listen to him. The stories are more interesting.

« My name is Toji. »

The stories fill my head, make me being deep in thoughts.



He’s here again.
He’s crying.

« You don’t even care, Miss? »

I hear so many voices.

« There was a forest fire, and Theena died in it. You know, the doe which Ram and Avur were fighting about. She just passed by! There’s only a small pile of ashes left, so they firstly didn’t know if it actually was a deer. But when Theena didn’t ever return, we had to believe so. »

He cries louder.
How annoying.

« So there are no bones left? »

He stares at me, unbelieving.

« What?! »
« Are you deaf? I asked if there are any bones left. »
« I … I don’t think so…? »
« Then it was murder. »

Now he almost falls from his legs.

« What?! »

I sigh.

« Someone kicked her deliberately into the fire. Ram if you ask me. He never really got over the fact that he had someone who was wanting his girl too. But if she died, everyone would pity him, he’d get an extra status, he’d be the poor stag with much misery in his life, and everyone would try to comfort him. They already do, don’t they? »

He looks at me as if I were a ghost.

« Well, now, as you say it, it’s right, Ram’s very much in the spotlight right now…! »

I cannot suppress a smile.

« There we have it. Ram pushed the poor doe into the fire when he saw it starting to burn, and when she was all burnt down, he took her bones with him to make her less identifiable. »

Toji seems like he’s close to fainting.

« That’s not true. You cannot know. »
« I do. »
« You don’t! Monster! Freaky face! »
« Stop annoying me, will you. »

He’s standing there, deep in anger.
