death of a snowman

you took such wonderful care of me when you made me,
endless hours spent bundling flake upon flake of snow
your hands, blue and freezing, much like the creature you created
the sun fell and stubbornly you rolled onward

I was surprised when I saw what you really looked like
you gave me stones for eyes, black and harsh
but you had such soft, colourful irises - why didn't I?
I couldn't move, either, stuck in the front garden for all to see

you were so proud as winter went on
you made sure I wouldn't die, you helped me
you put back all the broken pieces of ice that dropped from me every day
you replaced my snapped, brittle arms of wood

but eventually, something happened - something different
I started to feel drowsy, and tired, and you weren't there to stop it
my arms and nose and eyes and hat, they all dropped and you did nothing
you let me die, Mother. you left me to die by myself.

I awoke in a beautiful heaven of green...

Just because of that title I was reminded of the Carol Ann Duffy poem we read in English.
