Hm, I have an idea of what it could be. How do you close the game? Do you use the X in the top right hand corner, or the one in the game menu in the lower right hand corner? I've found that using the upper X actually crashes the game and can result in spells not being saved correctly.

Try getting a mask again, but this time close the game from the menu X instead. Your spell should save correctly, and you should have it next time you start up The Forest. Fingers cross anyway!
