It was a beautiful day in the forest, butterflies swarmed in the sky and the deers of the forest were running around happily. I had just woken up when I realised that I had a glowing pictogram above my head, it read 'Sparx'. I tilted my head, I had been named by the gods? I trotted outside and stretched my legs, the air smelt of flowers and vaguely of fawn... Following the scent I found myself arriving at the play area there were only a few stags resting on the highest rock, their masked faces staring out into the forest. A robin had landed on the white antlers of a deer that looked like a peacock. The robin had a short little beak and its berry-red chest was puffed out proudly as it sang. I was suddenly aware of giggling from behind me, I looked around and just saw the hind legs of a fawn vanishing behind a tree. I trotted over to the tree and said " Hello..? " The fawn responded with a giggle, I walked around the tree to find..nothing. More giggling from the other side of the tree, I darted around it just as the other fawn was. I was never going to catch it up! I stopped and started running around the other way of the tree, to come face to face with the most beautiful fawn I had ever seen. She batted those long eyelashes at me then leaned forwards and kissed me on the cheek.
I suddenly felt like I was floating on air, my legs felt wobbly and I was blushing. The fawn giggled and leapt onto a nearby rock . The sound of the robin singing snapped me out of my daydream..I gazed at her. Her brown fur was paler than other deer almost a creamy colour, there was a bit of fringe hanging from her head covering the top of her bright eyes. The tips of her ears were thick with fur and she turned to look at me when A butterfly settled on her nose, she giggled and stared at it.
" Hi there! " I said, my voice maybe louder than It should be. This startled the butterfly and it flittered off into the trees, the fawn turned her gaze to me and paused for a long while studying my face, then she said:
" Hello. "
I leapt onto the rock next to her, it didn't seem she has learnt as much words as me, so I said slowly and carefully " Do you speak much words? "
She blinked and then laughed lightly, " Of course I can, Silly. I do not like to talk much, it ruins the peace of the forest If i don't talk I can hear the birds singing, the wind whispering through the leaves of the trees, and also the calls of other deer in the forest. I prefer to use the body language the twin gods gifted us with "
I blinked and my mouth fell open. My gaze turned to her pictogram which read 'Serenity'.
" You have a very beautiful name " I said politely with a smile. She blushed then read my pictogram
" And Sparx is a very handsome name for a very handsome fawn " She replied and giggled.
I slipped back into my day dream again...
" Shall we go and play tag? " She suggested
" Oh...er..yeah, sure... " I managed to stutter. She raced off and I gave chase, We were playing for many hours before she stopped and said.
" I think I can trust you, Sparx. Follow me. " And I did. We pushed our way through many bushes until we came to a big tree covered in white and pink blossoms, a fawn lay hidden under the bushes.
" Sister, come out, I have a new friend "
The fawn shrank back into the bushes but after more encouragment she edged her way out, her fur was golden brown like honey and she had a long fringe covering half of her face.
" Sparx, this is Latte, My sister " She turned to the fawn " Latte, this is Sparx. He is my friend. "
" Hello.. " Latte said, with a bow. I bowed back. She suddenly asked a very odd question
" Do you ever wonder about the night, the moon and stars? " Latte murmured, tilting her head.
" Er, Yes, I know that the moon is the blinking eye of a twin god " I mumbled back, my tone lowering to keep level with hers.
She seemed pleased with my answer, " Ah, But I suspect your wondering how it got its silvery glow, eh? "
I hadn't really thought about it but nodded, Serenity gestured for me to sit down and I settled down with the two fawns. " Latte is very good at tellling how it happened " Serenity said, and Latte began.
" Many, Many years ago when the forest was just begining there lived a wolf in the forest, among the deer. She did not try to eat them because one of the tein gods put her down there, to protect the deer. Her name was Accalia and she had the lightest of grey fur, almost white and silvery grey eyes like the bark of a birch tree.
One day she was walking up to the waterfall when she heard of the cries of a fawn, it had become tangled in the reeds and was drowning. Accalia leapt into the river and grabbed the fawn, yanking it from the reeds. She managed to get herself out and keep the fawn's head above the water. She layed it down on the bank then realised, during the struggle Accalia had gripped the fawn's neck too tightly and had suffcoated it. She gasped, horrified and leapt back. Just then the mother of the fawn came and saw her dead fawn and the wolf standing over her.
" Oh my baby! Murderer! Murderer! " She cried into the air, the noise attracted all the stags and does of the forest.
" No, You don't understand, I'm not a murdered! She was tangled, In the reeds, I tried to helpt, but- " Accalia was cut off, A stag had roared into the air:
" You are a murderer, we must drive her to the ruins where she shall rot! " The stags drove the poor wolf to the ruins with their antlers and left her there.
That night the poor wolf sat, lonely. Her tears trickled down over her muzzle as she awaited the fate of one of the twin gods. Then from the air appeared the moon god, the 'thinker'. Her pelt was silvery and her mask was too beautiful to describe. Long antlers stretched back to her silvery, feathered wings. She had the long flowing tail of a horse which flickered about in the wind as she watched the wolf.
" You have killed a deer, Accalia, but I saw what happened. Accidents happen but still you must take the punishment "
" I am a murderer, it was all my fault! "
" You are no murderer Accalia and it wasn't your fault. Things in life like this happens, I am dissapointed with my deer. Their visions were too clouded with their own emotions to think about other's feelings. Your punishment is, to never return to this forest but to show the deer your soul is pure, it will be the light of the moon, my eye, and the rays will aid sight to the forest at night and tell the deer of your innocence. "
" So I can never return? " Accalia gasped.
" Only until the story gets passed down the generations until some one beleives strong enough that you can go down to tell them the true story, from your point of view, then you must return. This day will be an eclipse of the moon, so your rays are not needed. "
Accalia nodded and her body went limp as her soul rose up into the moon with the god. As soon as the moon lit up the silvery rays reached down to the forest and touched into the hearts of the deer, they new they were wrong and felt deeply ashamed. And so the story was passed on until the wolf returned on the night of the eclipse to two fawns who heard the true story "
I looked at Latte. " You saw..Accalia? "
Latte and Serenity nodded, then I lay down and dreamt of the proud wolf, watching over us all..
You're really great at coming
Thank you! ^^
