The Sketchbook

Yep. Another one. This made me stay up later than planned. \o/

Make sure you've read, or at least skimmed "Home Away From Home" and "Home Away From Home 2".
But for the tldr people... Touk showed Tundra where he used to live in the human world -- Suiren's house/dojo where Kinsha lives too. Tundra is now staying there.

Some words are links for the fun of it. Not really necessary to click, but they add to the story.
---

It was right there. Lying right in the open, unguarded. Almost taunting with temptation.

Kinsha's sketchbook.

He'd seen the "ninja" drawing in it from time to time, but if someone got too close, he'd shift ever so slightly, effectively blocking the page he'd been working on.

What was he drawing that he kept hiding it?

It was starting to drive Tundra crazy.

Ice blue eyes flicked around, checking to make sure no one was nearby. He could hear some noise from the front of the house -- Suiren was teaching a class in the dojo area -- but he had no idea where the blond could be. He'd jumped so many times from the guy just appearing out of nowhere - how did he walk so quietly?! -- that Tundra was on the verge of becoming paranoid.

Deeming the coast clear for the moment, "I know I really shouldn't" got beaten by "the curiosity is killing me". Tundra approached the sketchbook.

Taking the corner of the front cover, he lifted it very carefully as if it was booby-trapped, pausing for a second to listen again -- still seemed safe -- before opening the book to the first page.

He blinked.

Animals?

Starting to flip through pages to see more, he noticed that indeed, there were mostly sketches of animals. A few subjects came up more than once -- horse, rabbit, mantis, sometimes even what he was sure was some sort of whale or other animal...

He frowned, flipping back through a few pages. Some of the drawings were labeled. He'd noticed Kinsha liked to sign in Japanese, but whenever there was a leopard on the page, his name was near it. Come to think of it, other animal drawings had writing by them too. He flipped to one of the mantis drawings.

"Suiren".

His brows went up, before he flipped to another page, this time to one of the horses.

"Toukan".

Both brows nearly disappeared into his hairline now. Turning the page again, he came across a group drawing. All three of them -- leopard, mantis, and horse, with their names near each on the tree they were around, as if to show they'd been carved into it.

He wondered about the other drawings now.

He turned to one of the birds he'd also seen. A strange songbird in a dramatic pose. It popped up more often than anything else, but so far he hadn't seen anything written on those pages.

...wait.

He flipped back.

That one had something written by it.

"Shirubari"?

"I was wondering where I left that."

Tundra visibly jumped.

Once again, he hadn't heard Kinsha coming. But his words had sounded like they were hiding annoyance.

He thought about closing the sketchbook and pretending he hadn't been snooping, but it was too late for that. He'd been caught and denying it would make things worse.

From the corner of his eye, he saw the blond step over, more than likely to reclaim his sketchbook; perhaps tell him off for being nosy. But Kinsha paused.

Tundra stayed still, that "deer in the headlights" metaphor coming to mind again. He tried to fight his curiosity, but lost again -- he was sure it would get him into trouble one day -- and looked up (he'd been kneeling in front of the coffee table that the sketchbook was sitting on).

Kinsha was looking down at the drawing, his face holding an unreadable expression.

Suddenly, his eyes flicked over to Tundra, moving them away just as fast at noticing the other watching him, seeming defeated. "Look, just...I don't like anyone looking through these without my permission. They're kind of personal."

Not sure what to say, Tundra just nodded. It almost looked like the blond might cry, but he had no clue how to deal with this kind of situation, so he decided now would be a good time to leave. It seemed like the other wanted to be alone anyway.

As he left, he didn't notice the "ninja" pick up the sketchbook to turn the page to another drawing -- a leopard and bird with the Japanese writing for "Kinsha" and "Shirubari" -- a pained expression on his face.
