Rumi Reference

quadraptor's picture
Rumi is the third (and most likely final) 'living toy' character like Thich and Pema. He is a red fox plush animal.

Rumi is the most agile of the three, and therefore he can be overconfident. In addition, he is very fluffy, so he will exhibit traits of vanity and self-glorification. At times, he may seem egotistical, but in truth he simply enjoys beauty of all kinds, and often thinks he is just another masterpiece in a perfect world.

I wanted to make his eyes just slightly unnatural, so instead of brown, I gave him one red eye and one blue eye. The blue left eye is actually a theme for the three toy characters...

I wouldn't mind a little

I wouldn't mind a little critique on this. The front face seems a little off to me...I wouldn't mind adding in a little more detail so he looks more fluffy, too...

He looks so cute Quad, that grin is great! ^^ If you'd like critique, would you mind if I gave it a redline? It's a bit easier for me to explain if I do that. Smiling

Here you go. Smiling
Just a couple of things that I noticed in particular. For the face, you just need to decide whether you're going for a profile or a 3/4 view. The position you've given the head indicates a profile view, but the way you did the mouth is more of a 3/4 shot. Either is fine, it's just better to choose which one you want and position accordingly. ^^

For the body, your front end is fine, but the back end could use a bit more definition. I know you're limited by what you can do with a mouse, but what might be good practice is to look at skeleton images and try to identify the shapes that they form and how the flesh forms over them.

As for fluffiness, you're on the right track, but one of the keys is exaggeration. Curving the lines you make can indicate longer and softer hair, and if you make your broad forms large, you can give a fluffy look. Smiling

I hope this helps!

Ahhhhhh I see! I've never

Ahhhhhh I see! I've never really worked with a skeleton (since I've only recently gotten a good art program for digital drawings), but I should start practicing working with them. I've mostly been referencing photographs, but my animals do sometimes come out wonky. I knew the back legs didn't look right, glad you were able to show what needs to be done on them.

I also see what you mean about the face. It's that little bit on the tip of the snout that is a little problematic. I'll work on that, definitely!

Thank you, Trigger! This is very helpful!

You're very welcome! ^^

I find skeletons super-useful, because they let you see the bare structure of the animal, it's basic architecture. By studying a skeleton you can get a good rough idea of mechanics, and that lets you create basic ball and stick figures to build a drawing. Smiling Sometimes hair and muscle gets in the way and can distract you, if that makes sense!

That looks great Quad! ^^ I'm not sure if you take reference from any particular wings for Anirapio, but you can also try looking at bat wing skeletons for inspiration!

Your shading is also getting much better, you're really improving! <3

edit:

Threw together a (very) rough idea of how I would picture Ani's skeleton. I used some elements from animals such as anteaters (skull), bats (wings), and lizards (hips). When I have more time I might make this a bit nicer if you're interested! Smiling

I haven't really decided on

I haven't really decided on how her wings are, they tend to fluctuate between bat wings and pterodactyl wings. I'm not sure which would be better for wrapping prey and squeezing as well as being useful in flight. Sometimes I end up drawing them more like flippers XD

That skeleton looks remarkable! I'm wasn't expecting to see it here! And I'm trying on the shading, I think I need to define my light source while working so I know what parts should be light and what parts should be shaded.

Thank you for all this help!

Any time! ^^ I love it when

Any time! ^^ I love it when artists are so clearly improving!

With light sources, I find it's handy to draw a little ball or lightbulb where I think it would be coming from. That way I can keep it in mind all while I'm shading and not forget! Smiling
