Return to Nature Index
The next few days you have felt very enlightened. Your work has been much more productive, and your friends have enjoyed your company a little more than normal. You are home one day, and sitting in your favorite chair, you turn on the television.
Flipping through the channels, you stop on a channel that you never watch. There is a commercial on, with a voice talking about saving nature from being demolished, and what you can do to help. You normally don't pay attention to these kinds of commercials, but something was different about this one.
The commercial pans across a wide open field, where wildflowers of many colors blanket the place, and a gentle breeze makes them wave and sway beautifully. You slowly stop hearing the voice in the commercial, and closing your eyes, you hear your deer's voice, "Today, your life will change.", they say.
You open your eyes in response to the voice, and are surprised that you are standing
in the wildflower field you were just watching. The flowers let off an intoxicating scent collectively, and it fills your lungs and makes your mind reminisce of a simple life. You notice a variety of insects crawl and flutter around this place.
It must be paradise for them. You see butterflies of all kinds land on the bountiful flowers, bees pollinating happily, beetles climbing the stalks and enjoying the leaves, dragonflies hovering above almost aimlessly, and many others. You know the insects will not bother you, so you walk into the flowers, letting your hands touch a few of them as you walk. You feel little bits of dew collect onto your hands - it must be an early morning here.
You then hear some of the flowers rustling. Stopping, you listen for it again. Are there predators out here? Are you in danger?
You then see your deer pop their head up from the flowers, looking at you with a mouthful of them. You smile, "Good morning.", you say to them. The deer chews and swallows their meal, then replies, "Hello there. You must be getting the hang of natural instinct, I did not expect you to know the time of day here." You nod, not really understanding what that meant, but you know your deer is wise.
"Come, I have someone for you to meet today.", they say, and turning they walk deeper into the field. You follow, listening to the buzzing of the insects, watching the dragonflies in their flight. "This place is quite beautiful.", you say to your deer. They nod, not turning around, "Yes, this is one of Nature's untouched wonders. Many deer come here to find calm and peace...", they say, stopping and looking to you for a moment, "...and to find life."
You look at them curiously, wanting to reply, but they keep going. You wonder what they mean by that response. They soon find a patch where the flowers are much lower to the ground, and as you clear the taller flowers, you are surprised to see someone sitting there.
A lovely brown doe looks to both of you, laying on her side. You notice her belly is bulged out - she must be pregnant. "Hello there.", she says to you in a sweet voice. You greet her in return, as well as your deer, who bows to them. Your deer then looks to you, "She's going to have a fawn today.", they say.
You look to the young doe curiously, "It'll be today?", you question. The doe nods, "We were waiting for you to come. I need help birthing my little one.", she says. You tilt your head, "Wait, you...", you begin to say, but the doe cries out, "It's time! Hurry!"
You look to your deer, "What do I do?", you ask. The deer points a hoof at the doe, "Encourage her, rub her belly, and help her push the fawn out." You quickly kneel by the doe, petting her side and doing everything you could for her. She gives one more cry as the fawn is birthed, and you are there to catch the little one. He is very small and wet, his fur is a lovely golden color, and you can tell he is breathing normally.
You reach into your pocket and happen to have a little towel, so you clean the fawn's fur. You place him down by the mother, who is breathing heavily but very happy to see the little one. The fawn nurses from the doe, who lays her head softly on the flowers.
"Take good care of him.", she says to you as she closes her eyes. You look at her, "But...", you begin to say, when you notice that her heavy breathing has slowed and then comes to a halt.
You look at your deer, who gives a quiet but serious nod to you. "It was her time.", they say to you. You look back at the little fawn, who quietly suckles on his mother's belly. The doe lay peacefully, her body still, as if she were only resting.
But you knew...she had died birthing the little fawn...
You look back at your deer once more, "What are we going to do?", you ask. "I'll keep him during the day, and when you return, we'll both watch over the little one. You may name him if you'd like.", they reply.
You think for a moment. "Vito," you say, "for life." Your deer nods in approval. You look back at the doe, "What will happen to her?", you ask.
"Her body will return to the land, as a tribute to Nature's wonder. She is at peace, and with Vito born, she had fulfilled her goals in her life. And if she chooses, she may live another life.", your deer replies.
You lower your head. It still seems very sad to you that she died giving birth to Vito. "Our time here is done. Vito will be well protected with me, so do not worry about us.", your deer says, "Tomorrow, you will experience the life of a doe. Embrace the spirit of the doe from the caverns, and she will show you how to be Vito's mother."
You open your eyes suddenly, finding yourself back in your house, the television still on. There is a program on about a mother whitetail doe who had just given birth to a fawn. You begin to sit up when you notice something sitting in your lap.
A plush animal of a fawn sits there, one you have never seen before. "Vito...", you say to the little toy.
So who wants to adopt a fawn
"Pweeze adopp me todai. I wuv yoo!"
XD sorry, couldn't resist.
Watching Ghost Adventures now, but after I might finish this story tonight.
Name time! I need a name for
No ideas for names, but this
You could always look up names that mean 'life' or 'innocence' or something. o:
I think I have a name: Vito.
Vito. I know it sounds kind of Italian, but I thought it sounded a lot like vitality - the capacity to live, grow, or develop.
There's a reason why he's male, too, but you'll find that out later. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, it really helped me decide on the name.
Also I know that the reader may be male or female, but I'll have Vito call you 'mother' because of the doe spirit from Story VIII, so yes I did consider that
Murr...don't know where Story XI should be written at...so many options...
