When I started drawing humans I think I referenced from all kinds of mangas... -facepalm-
But later on till now I've used photos of people, plus influences from other artists and my own style smashed all up together.
I'd suggest to dig some tutorials [from DA, from conceptart.org..] of drawing human face.
For reference, photos work well for basics and leaves space for your own drawing style.
Also watching other human artists helps a lot with getting a grasp of basics and getting some help with the style.
